It would be pretty awesome if Apple started offering iTunes movies in 4k and released an Apple TV that can handle it. Lots of 4k tvs on the market now and virtually no content to play on them.

That's sound logic. My only question would be wouldn't they keep it A8X in the Apple TV - better for gaming and other activities?

Would it be a possibility the Apple TV becomes the focus of the home, homekit syncing to it?, health data?, iWatch syncing data to it? - Becoming less of a download only device and just as much a content uploader to iCloud?

Obviously 4k Airplay and Home Sharing of iTunes libraries wouldn't benefit from the A8X, they'd get by on an A8.
Yeah, that's the real question. Stick with the minimum, or go into gaming.

A8X is possible if they go gaming. A9 is not as they won't be available in good supply until 2016, Apple will need them for the iPhone 6 Plus until then. And no, phone releases at WWDC are no longer possible. No iPhone can be released without a new iOS for marketing reasons, and iOS 9 won't be ready in June. Your understanding of the future leaves much room for improvement.

You can't just deduce that Apple will never release another iPhone at WWDC, ever. Or that the new Apple TV we've heard nothing about will have definitely have a chip. We don't know what Apple will do, we can only guess.

Don't say I don't understand the future, it's an idiotic thing to say.

I dont understand what's the benefit, or even the point, of a 4K video off a mobile phone.

Ask the Samsung fans when Samsung releases a 4K phone ;)

4K video ? wait until apple provide iPhone with 64gb as the entry level.
with 16 gb space, it is pretty much useless.

Its useless really regardless of the consumer having the tech to play it. I work in production and currently we don't have the capability for mass 4k tv/movie production.

The files are over twice the size of what we work on now so its going to take some time for our industry to upgrade to the hardware capable of producing this. And of course, prices are going to have to go up on our product.

Samsung releasing something useless for marketing reason... Never happens ( sic) ;-)

4k video on an iPhone? Hmm, let's see here...

The number before 4 is 3, and the letter before K is L, and putting 4k video on a phone is a totally backwards thing to do- so if those are switched around that gives us L and 3.

iPhone starts with an i, and the letter before that is H, so if we put that before the other ones, that gives us H, L, and 3.

Half-Life 3 confirmed. :D

Not that I even barely followed your logic, but I'm pretty sure the letter before K is J, not L. :D

The only reason I see any good in this is for the Apple TV. As has been said this chip would fit nicely into a 2015 Apple TV with that can send 4k video to a 4k display.

Other than that, the resolution of the iPhone 6+ is only HD, so playing back 4k on a phone is cute, but would be wasted.

Also, the RAM is set at a gig right? Can we get more RAM in the phone first? A gig for the Apple TV is fine, but folks are really putting their phones to task now that they have adequate displays. Two Gigabytes or more first, then a 4k panel then apps that really take advantage of the screen size . . . . . . THEN 4k is welcomed.

Don't forget it's shared memory so 4K will take more from that pool so you want 4GB which would make it truly 64-bit and split screen multitasking ready.

STOP IT!

You make we want the iPhone 7 NOW. Split screen multitasking is another one of those features I miss from my Note days.

I think we'll see it on the iPad first, and that's fine, but please give it to us. I think the full sized iPad and the rumored iPad Pro are kind of silly to think about without split screen multitasking.

Exclusivity doesn't work and it'll just end up pissing off customers and driving them to competitors. They need to roll it out across all flagship products. Was looking at getting the new Mini 3 until I found out they gimped it by not including the 2GB DRAM and tri-core from iPad Air 2.

Is it REALLY playing a 4K video if it is showing it on a 1K screen? I think it is reading a 4K video files, thrashing 3/4 of the data and displaying the remaining 1K video stream.

It is like when you buy a 24MP camera and are all happy that you have this high resolution image. But then you phone has a 2MP screen. What happens to the extra pixels? Well they are down sampled and not displayed.

Yeah but they'll still look better than a 2MP camera shot would. 4k looks better on my 720p screen than 720p does, even if it's extremely inefficient.

There are some huge leaps of faith going on in this thread. Notably regarding the Apple TV and 4K content from Apple.

Apple has been quite slow at delivering premium resolution content. Music is still capped at 256 kbps, and films and TV shows were quite late coming to the HD party from iTunes. I seem to remember there were many people upset because Apples HD wasn't exactly to the specs people wanted.

How many people have 4K capable TV's and of these how many are in the Apple eco system and would use Apple for 4K content?

Is Apple set-up to be able to deliver 4K content? Not only Apple but the various ISPs and related infrastructure?

Having a processor that is capable of 4K is nice, it's one important part of the puzzle, but I think it will be some time before the rest of the parts all slot into place.

Can process & play 4k video you say?
Well then lets throw that thing in an AppleTV how about!?
