I see this as an ADDITION but not replacing TV.

If I had my choice, would I want to see a missed show on my 52" LCD or the 10" iPad? Clearly I would pick my TV.

I still want to be able to watch everyone on my TV FIRST, second on this little devices.

I agree with you on some shows (movies, sports, special events), but I'm OK with an iPad viewing for standard series and shows that are basically people talking to each other. Video is really good on the iPad. Surprisingly good.

For our large-screen TVs, perhaps the next Apple TV rev will be the device that replaces our cable boxes.

I'll use my 50" flat screen for a good movie or two but I hate to be tied down to a monthly payment for lots and lots of crap.

They plan interactive ads? This does not sound promising. More like intrusive.
Here's what I think smart advertisers should do to get us to watch their ads and buy their products:

Have ads play normally if you don't interact with them. Display a menu of some kind, like buttons along the bottom for different products, or details about particular features of the product, or your choice of testimonials. If you touch one, a more specific ad plays and is only half as long as the full ad. So you "win" by cutting the time short but the advertiser "wins" by having your attention.

Can't wait until all the other networks do this. :) I've watched probably 10 TV Episodes on this already and can't get enough. It even worked great at Starbucks while I was waiting for a friend to meet me for dinner next door. ;)

On ABC.COM they ocasionally give you the option to watch a 60 second commercial at the beginning which then limits your commercials. I still love this option the most... I'd rather watch all the ad's up front then have to be interrupted in the middle. ;)

I agree. Is the ABC iPad app offering anything that isn't already offered their website? Any HTPC has provided this content for TVs for a long time.

Really? You're going to sit in your house and pick watching a show on your iPad over watching it on your TV? I don't care how good the video is it's not better than 40+" LCD while you're kicked back on the couch. Lets not even get started with audio.

The iPad hasn't changed anything wrt to being tied to a monthly payment. Go get a mini (or any other HTPC) and you can watch all this content on your TV now, as in for the past few years.

Not viewable in Canada

Beautiful app. Watched some shows in the US, but in Canada it just says you are not in the US or its possessions. Makes you want to be possessed!

Am I the only one who wishes they would release the app for the iPhone?
I don't have an iPad and probably won't be getting one any time soon.

Well, now you know not everyone thinks like you.

The more and more I read about and use the iPads in stores...I keep wanting one. I really like the iBook app as I'm in the market for an e-reader...just not sure how the screen would effect my eyes after an hour or two straight of reading.

It's not nearly as bad as you think. The resolution is good, the fonts are high quality, and you have full control over the brightness and font size. I use half brightness mostly, and that's plenty bright enough for my needs.

I had stopped watching all TV except for 24 and sporting events, but the Modern Family iPad episode got me to watch that episode of Modern Family on the ABC app and I liked it so I watched the rest of them too. I don't mind the streaming commercials, and haven't had any noticeable problems with crashes.

ABC going to violate iPhone OS developer agreement?

The article states that they will soon offer ads based on the user's location [eg: an ad from a car dealer near me rather than one near the west coast]. But this is in direct violation of the new iPhone Developer agreement:

http://erickerr.com/iphone-agreement-thirdparty

This states that unless the app's primary purpose is geo-located orientated, like a coupon app that would see what store you are near and show you coupons, that one can not use geolocation to push targeted advertising.

I wonder if Apple would enforce this rule on ABC like it does for the rest of us.

Potentially Misleading Statistics

I have been downloading a ton of free iPad apps in anticipation of the prices going up once they work out bugs. I have ordered a 3G iPad and would rather not burn the cash on apps that the non 3Gers got for free. I wonder how much of the pre-order demographic I make up (thus making the number of active downloaded apps significantly smaller.

That's not so good if you end up deciding not to watch the whole show after seeing a bit of it, but OK if you're going to stick it out.

My interpretation of the developer agreement is that Apple is referring to the geo-location features (GPS, Skyhook) on the iPhone, not targeted advertising based on something like IP.

They don’t want developers activating the GPS module or Skyhook triangulation JUST to serve a location-based ad. And neither do most users even if they allow the app to inadvertently access those features (who doesn’t always press Yes to that pop-up anyway?).

ABC’s Web player uses your IP address to determine advertising. You typically get a house ad for your local ABC affiliate, etc.

"Advertisers on the iPad so far include Clorox, Lexus, AT&T, Heineken, Sears and Target. For now, Disney is delivering the same kind of 30-second spots seen on television. Starting in the fall, it expects to sell the kind of interactive ads featured on its Web player. Also, ABC eventually expects to give local affiliates the ability to sell ads that would be seen only by iPad users in their markets, a capability that already exists on its Web-based player."

This app wasn't that hard to do, since all Disney/ABC did was change the "wrapper" around the H.264 streaming video from Flash to HTML 5.0.

I think it's increasingly likely H.264 will win out for streaming video in HTML 5.0, since YouTube and the majority of Blu-ray discs use some form of H.264 video compression and people don't want to deal with another video compression format with Ogg Theora.

You're not the only one. I've been waiting for an ABC app forever on the iPod touch, and the iPad gets one on launch day.

no please not the Ads

OK when Steve Jobs demoed the Ads, they looked pretty cool ( if one can say that about an ad! ) and I definitely think it's an improvement of User value/time.

But here's the problem... If these Ads come up while you're watching a TV show, it's going to be annoying as sin. People don't want to browse through ads ( even interesting interactive ones ) when they're WATCHING a TV show. Traditional Ads are distracting enough. Do you really think someone will "wander" off and go mess with an interactive Ad, instead of finishing the TV show they wanted to watch? Talk about catering to ADHD.
