About that Tapered iPhone 5 Design...

So many angry people.

For all those that think Apple sticks to a fairly regular schedule and product upgrade, the 4S shouldn't be too huge of a surprise. Especially when there was zero credible info about the 5.

Apple always leaves you wanting more.

Next model will probably have LTE, NFC, larger screen, and will be a little thinner/lighter.

If they had included those upgrades this time, what would they do next year? Quad-core? NFC is fairly useless currently, LTE is growing, but only Verizon (US at least) has started rolling out, so they aren't priorities.

Not making the device lighter/thinner with a larger screen was a let down, but maybe they are waiting for tech to allow for larger screen + "HD" display + decent battery life.

I'm coming from Android and the only thing I wish the 4S had was a larger screen, beyond that, it offers everything you'd expect plus the best ecosystem around.

I'm happy :)

I guess very few current iPhone 4 owners can justify to spend another expensive 2 year contract for a phone that looks exactly the same. Sure the upgraded internals are nice, but all have been expected since the debut of iPad 2 (i.e. A5 chip with improved graphics, more RAM (still in doubt, maybe it's still 512MB), better 8MP camera from Sony, and Siri.
Do most people actually upgrade their phone every year? Especially if they are locked in multi-year contracts? Besides completely new customers, I think the iPhone 4S is really targetted to iPhone 3GS owners, which won't have trouble seeing the upgrade potential.

2nd gen iPhone was call iPhone 3G. So, why would people care if next iPhone is call iPhone 6 or 5? I swear to god next person talks about the name iPhone 6, I'll grab his/her iPhone and force it down his/her throat.

The ONLY good thing about the 4S release is that it sets the pattern of "new phone" / "old phone" alternating yearly.

Now you can (hopefully) safely wait until next year and get on the proper upgrade schedule to avoid receiving recycled designs as your 2 year upgrade.

Apple are very consistent....

All there other products keep the cases and general look why not the iPhone?? Just look at any product, they only change the look once in a few years 3-5. Look at the Mac Pro! It's been the same since it was a G5 machine....

I think this is commercially and culturally quite deep... It keeps customers happy for longer. I can only afford/justify an upgrade every few generations of apple product. I am happy with my purchase till next time I buy a new one. No one knows how old my Mac Book is when I sit on the train. If they changed the case every generation I would spend a long time unhappy between purchases.

I have had the iPhone 4 on AT&T since it came out, but I will be getting the 4S. Why, you ask? Because AT&T can take their overpriced plans and capped data and shove it up their ***. Sprint with a cheaper bill and unlimited data, here I come. I will just sell my current 32g iPhone 4 and be out nothing. Simple. :)

Take a bow Macrumors!! You and other sites like you have cost Apple billions of dollars and have angered many fans. Maybe next time you can keep your totally unfounded 'rumors' to yourself.

Perhaps the rumors weren't completely unfounded...? How are they supposed to identify what "rumors" aren't founded when they have case makers and analysts promoting these rumors? They can't just assume it's false and let it go unreported, an besides, you have no idea how many actually "unfounded" rumors the site might be leaving off.

I have no problem with Apple doing minor "spec bump" releases between major design refreshes. The problem is that this spec bump took a year and a half.

Spec bumps should come out 6-9 months after a release. 12-18 months should = new design.

I'm sure the world's most successful company will take your astute business advice to heart. Thanks for the assist!

I just don't get this, at all. The fact that the 4S looks the same means the totally reworked internals are just 'nice' but otherwise irrelevant? So such things as better performance, increased capacity, higher quality camera, improved antenna design and thus radio performance, matter not at all when measured against cosmetics?

And worse, that just because at least some of these improvements were anticipated before the 4S announcement, means that actually putting them inside the product is a disappointment?

On balance, since I somehow doubt there are many people posting here who lead multi-billion dollar enterprises, I'd put my money on Apple having more than a slight clue about what they're doing and the market they are selling to. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the 4S become a large volume success as a consequence.

The logic doesn't work. They used '3G' because they were releasing a 3G phone. If there's any connection at all the next phone will be the 4G, but for a number of reasons I doubt they'll head in that direction. It will probably be iPhone 5.

I'm going with iPhone LTE....iPhone 5 would also make no sense since it is the 6th generation iPhone.

Most iPhone 4 owners under a contract weren't going to upgrade no matter what Apple released, because it's rarely worth the upgrade penalty. But by the same token, those iPhone 4 users aren't going to pay a penalty to jump ship to Android either. They're going to sit tight until their current contract expires and something they're willing to own for another two or three years is released.

Almost every 3GS and 3G owner I know is planning on upgrading on launch day.

The entire cell phone industry is on a 18 - 30 month subscriber turnover cycle by virtue of the two year commitment contracts every carrier does to subsidize phones. There's very little benefit in trying to capture the 1% of subscribers that demand a new phone every 6 months, and for Apple, there's rather huge supply chain benefits to keeping the iPhone 4 body for another year or so.

Even a minimal casing mod would have shut up half of the whiners here and let them focus more on the great guts that are now inside.

Using an Old CPU, and improve camera that is lagging with respect of the rest of the industry is not "great guts" by any means.. it is a small bump on spec expected for a cost reduction design of any product life cycle.

Hahaha

Seriously. I think the moral of the story is:

Let's filter our "rumors" and not put anything any 2 year old said about the iPhone up on a site that gets a lot of readers. Because: Was the iPhone launch actually disappointing, or were we just disappointed that there was not LIEphone5? haha. If all of this bullllsh*& wasn't out there, everyone would of peed their pants like always.

LIEphone5... seriously that's funny. haha. You heard it first here kids. hahaha...

Exactly HOW have the rumors cost Apple billions of dollars. Do you think there WONT be people camped out waiting for this phone, regardless?

Do you think all the other Apple "fans" take sites like this as seriously as you do?

Angry? You are actually ANGRY that content on a site based purely on speculation didn't turn into fact?

The problem is you.

Does anyone else think that at some point they'll potentislly drop the number scheme as others on here have predicted? It makes you wonder how high the numbers will go (ie iPhone 12). It could happen, but maybe they'll consider referring to it (and the iPad eventually) as just their names, similar to the way macs and iPods aren't numbered (just referred to by year and cycle implicitly). Or they might stick to the 's' addition to cut the numbering in half maybe

I don't know about any of you, but I'm getting the 4S if only to talk to Majel :)

Can't say about the hardware, but I do hope there will be an "iOS X".

That would kick so much a**!!

...Oh, and to everyone blaming MacRumors for the disappointment: Grow the F. Up.
In a sea of speculation, You are responsible for what you believe. Nobody forced you to come visit a site where even the slightest possibility is given consideration.

Can you imagine what Apple can do with the extra real estate? More space for battery, powerful chips.... it'll be a game changer. All good things in due time.

Extra real estate? It would be very "un-Apple" to make the iPhone larger. The larger screen is speculated to take up a larger percentage of the front. Personally, I think that would be bad as it would be difficult to hold without inadvertently touching the screen. The proposed design is flawed as it would constrict the battery size. That is probably why you won't see that exact design until there is another leap in battery tech. IF they do LTE next year it will need more battery.

Let's face it, Apple doesn't want to be in the position where consumers expect them to fundamentally redesign the phone every year. That's a lot of work for a design that doesn't last that long at the high end. Plus, each redesign means it's harder to top yourself the next time around. Just look at how the iPod Classic line has stagnated so much over the years to the point it's not even mentioned during keynotes anymore.

Apple has already proven that there's such a thing as overdesign when they created the 3rd generation Shuffle. It had no buttons and could only be controlled via voice, frustrating users. It was hated so badly that the 4th generation was basically a 2nd generation Shuffle with new colors.

The actual design of the hardware can only change so much. For example, I don't think we'll ever see any more significant camera updates in new iPhones worth talking about. What would be better than 8MP stills/1080p video recording that would be reasonable to stick into a phone? The future of the iPhone platform is iOS itself because that's where real innovation can happen for several years to come.

You are 100 percent right!

I am surprised that they redesigned the Ipad between the Ipad 1 and 2.

We will get a redesign in the Iphone 5...plus it will have 4G LTE...most people can upgrade every year (18 months)..not two years.

Plus you can sell your old Iphone to make up the difference.

The key is to get the Iphone 4S early so that you are eligible for the Upgrade to the Iphone 5.

It's highly unlikely Apple would be making anything asymmetrical. In this case the screen position and the slanted back.
