I've been enjoying 5.1.1 Untethered for a while (Old bootrom 3GS of course), and I've got to say that it's worth the jailbreak.

When I bought my 3GS I was unaware of the old bootrom vs. new bootrom stuff - and of course I have the new bootrom. :(

I'm still waiting on the ultrasn0w update. There seem to be sporadic issues with the available ultrasn0w fixer.

Do apps not get restored this way?

no, a backup only includes the data of apps like game scores etc. what u needed to do was right click "transfer purchases" and it would have transfered your purchased apps to your computer. i'm guessing you didnt do that and therefor it can't restore and synch the apps back because you dont have them stored on your computer. u need to re-download all those apps again (dont worry its free)

I'm sure this gets asked every time there's a new jailbreak story, but what are some of the current benefits to jailbreaking?

The only one I think I'd be interested in is the quick-reply SMS feature that allows you to reply to a text without leaving an app. It'd be great if Apple implemented that, because I don't think I'm gonna bother jail breaking just for that.

But what else is there?

Swipebright

No really. Swipe the status bar left or right to change the screen brightness. No extra steps, just swipe. SBSettings takes 5 motions (4 if you use the notifications panel) to change the brightness, Swipebright, just one.

Other favorites:
ColorProfiles: to adjust color temp of bluish LED backlight for more accurate colors
F.lux: to adjust color temp based on time of day (because indoor nighttime lighting should be warm and dim)
Fullscreen for safari: adds full screen mode and other multitouch
Iconoclasm: to get more apps per page on the iPad
Navigate from Maps: to go from maps to a Navigator app in one tap.

I do have to add that SBSettings is the only way to turn on/off 3G/4G on an AT&T iPhone 4S...it's extremely helpful when you can't get much of a 3G signal, but Edge reception is great.

I use this all the time at sports events, where the signal may be fine, but 3G is over saturated due to sheer number of users, and EDGE is still perfectly usable. (And to think AT&T is a sponsor of the league...)

Tried it. Painless. ...til it started refusing to restore from backup. Won't do it no matter how many times I redo it.

All my app data is in there. Guess I'll cross my fingers the backup wasn't corrupted, and do a fresh reset to stock. ...except, now it's hanging and won't reset...

greaaaat

upd: yep. won't restore from that backup clean either now. The last two weeks of design drawings are toast. god... the one time I try this without multiple backups... such a noob move

wipe your iDevice and leave it empty than jailbreak before restoring from backup. seems to spill out errors otherwise. worked fine on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 wifi

FINALLY i can get my Notification Center Widgets and live weather icon back :D

Notification Center Widgets
Live Weather Icon
Icons in the Status Bar
Fold to unlock (SWEET)
better Multitasking etc

For the people who are unaware, you should add Quasar to that list.
Quasar is a phenomenal window manager for the iPad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cYWha8YFi8

Oh yes, Thank you :)
If I had a 4S I would have noted that myself.
It's hard to keep up on basic functionality of things you don't own.

Seems that the direct links in the main article aren't pointing to the right site. For a moment I started thinking that the site had been completely pulled, but a quick google search brought me to the right site...

Incidentally, they're now up to Absinthe 2.0.4.

This is it, people. This...is what it's all about:

There I was, jailbreaking to gain some extra flexibility to improve my productivity, and all I've done thus far is used it to play old DOS and Nintendo games.

Oh yeah, I also installed iFile. There's that.

Absinth says "sorry the attached device is unsupported"

What gives? Does this mean I can't jailbreak? I'm running 5.1.1.

Help with 5.1.1 update

I am looking to update my JB 4s currently running on version 5.0, baseband 1.0.11 to the latest version 5.1.1. JB & Unlock (if possible)

The issues I am having are the following:

1) Itunes shows my last sync was back in 2011, even though I synced last night 6/5/12. How can I sync my JB phone with Itunes so that itunes records the last sync as of now ?? I do not update without the ability to restore my phone back to present day setup. I dont want to lose contacts, txts, etc ??

2) Should I preserve baseband for unlock before running the 5.1.1 upgrade? It doesnt seem like the latest Ultrasnow will apply to this baseband anyway

What is the best way to do this? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

why not? I thought absinthe was supposed to allow me to do this? I'm confused as to why my 5.1.1 iPhone isn't supported...

Is there some way to trouble shoot this?

What phone do you have? What is the exact version of the iOS you are running? Did you follow the directions and do a COMPLETE restore? (Some people have had problems jailbreaking when their OS was over-the-air upgraded, but works fine when you do a restore.)

Seriously???

You post a question with absolutely ZERO helpful information and except help?
I gave the only answer I could with the information you posted. I see no reason to play 20 questions with you when you are the one asking for help.

Thanks. I have a 16gig 4s. Running 5.1.1. It was completely restored as a new phone. The problem was with absinthe, for some reason the program wasn't installed properly, when I uninstalled, redownloaded and reinstalled it the device was recognized. I think you're right about the over the air upgrade causing a problem though.

That gave me fits with tiny umbrella. The whole process was quite an opportunity to learn and I appreciate you're thoughts and response.

Well apparently I'm completely dumb.
I misunderstood the difference between Jailbreak and unlock.
So my iphone is jailbroken, which is fine, but I really wanted it to be unlocked. How can I do this without being scammed again?
