I'm sure there are others but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

You forgot Terminal and OpenSSH.

:mad:Why do we need to jailbreak? It just breaks or phone, makes it impossible to sync with your computer, makes you device laggy, and all for a little custimization. If you wanted that garbage, you should not have bought an iPhone.

I don't think you've researched jailbreaking enough. My iPhone is basically the same as any other iPhone except that I have a GameBoy Color and GBA emulator app and Terminal. I can sync with iTunes. The only thing I can't do is update, but I don't even want to anyway (more stupid privacy protection that I don't care about).

Come on: we have some serious hardware (most importantly, the iPad 3) not matched by ANYTHING else on the market but Apple restricts it so bad that not even MKV files can be played properly? Of course one will want to jailbreak it.

BTW, have you seen Quasar and the other tweaks? You might want to read my prev post in this thread for some quality tweaks:

BTW, let me also present my list of jailbreak favorites (add SBSettings, XBMC, Terminal, BTstack Mouse, OpenSSH (free and, therefore, not listed) and RushPlayer+ (must be purchased via IAP) to the list below):

You know I get that many folks like yourself have no need to jailbreak, but what I don't understand is why users like you have this smug and superior attitude to folks that *do* want to Jailbreak? Many many people have shown the benefits of JB for themselves - just do a search on through the forums on this site alone. Yet, users like yourself give this attitude. Seriously... why?

Who made you the "king of iOS?"

w00master

Absolutely agree. People that are against jailbreaking, in general, don't know what excellent hacks there are (Quasar and the like).

you have no idea my friend. do some research before you post and make a fool of yourself in the process

What are you talking about? I sync my jailbroken iPhone with iTunes every few days - I subscribe to a lot of podcasts. Sync is unaffected - it works EXACTLY like it does with a stock iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

The ONLY significant function that's routinely affected is the upgrade process when a new version of iOS comes out. No way around that - but how often does that come up?

If jailbreaking ever breaks something, it's a bug - just like when an App Store app purchase or iOS update breaks something on an un-jailbroken device. It's a bug, and the developers work on it to fix the problem.

You might want to try a podcast app like Instacast, Downcast, or Pocket Casts. Podcast subscriptions that update on the iOS device itself; no need to sync. iMore's Allyson Kazmucha ranked Instacast the best, but it requires iOS 5.0 and you use 4.1.

Back on topic, appleaddictx is full of it. The only point I agree with him/her on is lagginess, but most of the time the lag was only mildly annoying, not intolerable. It's not just a "little" customization either. There's a lot of really useful software in Cydia.

I think the debate is settled -Tips for getting started

OK, i think the debate that Jailbreaking is generally safe and is very useful to lots of people is settled.

I am going to finally Jailbreak my Iphone 4 running 5.1.1 tonight. Any tips or tutorials people recommend to help me get started. I think the JB instructions are pretty easy to follow. I am more interested in tips to get the most out of my Jailbroken iPhone.

Thanks

Just would just need to jailbreak your iPhone. After that install TetherMe from Cydia. I recomend TetherMe because it uses the stock tethering settings which is really easy to use!! Don't get scared thinking they might find out but the TetherMe solution hides the usage.
After that create a hotspot with password and on your iPad choose it like you would any wifi network!!
There's lots of cool tweaks that you can install with cydia you just gotta look up YouTube videos on tweaks!!
Hope that helps!!

(also I see someone commenting about ATT finding out but so far I've heard of noone getting caught)

Thanks! I'll definitely be using this.

I'm curious if there are any decent NES/SNES/GEN emulators for the ipad out atm that actually function well on the iPad 3. I remember some of them that are written for the iphone and don't really look great or function well with the older iPads (controller area too large and cumbersome)

I haven't had a much time to play with it yet, but so far quasar didn't seem to work well on my iPad 3. Does have difficulty running on iPad 3 or is it just my particular installation?

No problems because of the higher res: not slower than on my iPad 2.

It has some problems like some apps may incorrectly rotate or don't get maximized to the full screen; however, in the latter case, just press Home once to gain access to the window controls again.

It doesn't work together with FaceTime.

What's the particular problem with your iPad 3 + Quasar combo?

There is also a quick video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snrvBtqqaLM showing it in action.

I've been enjoying 5.1.1 Untethered for a while (Old bootrom 3GS of course), and I've got to say that it's worth the jailbreak.

Here are some other tweaks to keep in mind:

5 Icon Dock
-Pretty much what it says.
-With 'Scrollingboard' you can get a custom number of icons in the dock, but you get the music controls found in the multitasking menu if you turn the page left, multiple other plugins, and if you turn the page right, you get pages for your dock.
-Scrollingboard costs money though, 5 Icon Dock is free.

Barrel
-Different icon animations for scrolling through pages on your springboard. If you used it before, it has a handful of new icon animations. I'm sticking to Cube (Outside) though.
-Also costs money.

WeeRoll
-A lot like Barrel, but it gives an animation for your main screen when pulling down the notification center. I have no idea how it would work on the iPad, if at all.
-I'm pretty sure this cost money also... I don't remember.

WeatherIcon
-Just nice if you actually look at your icons. I get annoyed by the weather app icon always suggesting it's sunny and 73. Also, there was an tweak called LiveClock, which offered a similar thing to the clock app. I don't think it's been updated though. It's not always 10:15 damnit...
-Both are free, but I do believe that LiveClock hasn't been updated.

SBSettings
-Quick toggles from anywhere that has a status bar, and some other system info that can be quite useful. It also has a fake carrier option, along with the ability to put the date along side the time in the status bar. And you can also get the free system memory, which is quite useful when you're multitasking a ton of apps.
-I haven't installed it since updating to 5.1.1, and I have recently realized that it is quite the resource hog. Still really useful, but with a 3GS you might want to reconsider. If you're running a 4 or 4S or any model iPad, it should work well enough.
-This one is also free.

Pinned Nyan
-Animated Nyan Cat in your notification center pull down page. If you tap it it plays the song. Not really that useful other than annoying coworkers, classmates, teachers, etc.
-It is in another repository, so you'd have to google it.
-It is free.

I can't think of any more at the moment, but I hoped this little list helped.

I do have to add that SBSettings is the only way to turn on/off 3G/4G on an AT&T iPhone 4S...it's extremely helpful when you can't get much of a 3G signal, but Edge reception is great.

JB doesn't work

I tried to JB mine with 5.1.1 built is (9B206) but it doesn't work, it failed at nearly end of progress bar. Does anyone know what's issue?

yep most likely, worked just fine on all my 3 iDevices.

1. update/restore to 5.1.1 (9B206)
2. set up your iPhone as new (from the device itself, just skip through all those set-ups on the iPhone until u reach the homescreen and have signal)
2.2 iTunes on your computer should show the "set up as new or from backup" screen, leave that be for now.
3. use absinthe to jailbreak your iPhone
- crossing fingers -
3.1 iPhone should boot back up and show the Cydia icon
4. go on itunes and chose "restore from backup" option

Having a similar problem as all my pruchased/download apps missing after I do the restore. I tried the above but it did not help. Cydia loaded fine.

Any suggestions?

Yes. But it is not re-installing them. I right clicked on my device in itunes and created the back up. I can see it in the directory it created.

Photos are there. Contact list is there. Notes are there. But no apps.

Edit: I must be misunderstanding something. When I right click to restore, it says "this will restore only the contacts, calendars, notes, text messages, and settings, not the iPhone firmware." Do apps not get restored this way?

hmmm did u check if "sync applications" is checked in the App Tab when your iPhone is plugged in? and check if there are even any apps on your iTunes. did u click "transfer purchases" before u restored your phone? the backup itself doesnt back up the apps but its app "data" only
