So what you guys are saying is Netflix on Apple TV 4 is absolutely horrible but fantastic on Roku. They have the same UI and work the same, but Apple TV Netflix is garbage b/c it doesn't support 4K. I can see 4K is extremely important to you. You guys aren't revealing any surprise news to me, I've had various iterations of both devices for years. Roku is a neat device, but I don't think you have to consider Apple TV to be a worthless pile of crap to appreciate Roku.

Not at all what I wrote. I certainly did not call it a 'worthless pile of crap' or, frankly, anything at all. I simply stated it was missing two features I desired. 4K ... yea ... that's important to me. As I indicated - to me the ATV 4 was out of date the day it was released. I'm betting the ATV 5 will have 4k.

The one thing I hated after I bought it was the sound quality. You cannot bitstream and Apple falsely advertised you could bitstream Dolby Digital + on it amongst other things.

I'm about to join the 'I Hate My New AppleTV Club'.
All I've been able to get for the past 24 hours is An unexpected error occurred when I select any of my purchased movies.
I contacted Apple via email yesterday but as of yet I've heard nothing .
Most of the movies were just showing blank tiles too which I've got them back by logging out and logging back in again, but still receiving the error message.

Did you reboot?

I hated to ask it but I wanted to start simple. lol
I've found that some films are working while a lot of others are not.
As an example none of The Fast and Furious films work, only 1 of the Bourne films does. (Actually tell a lie, Fast & Furious 7 works)
I've got 71 films so quite a lot to check through each one.
I may have to get my ATV3 off my daughter and see if they work on that or not.

Ok so this is weird, I've just changed to a different account that's in Family Sharing and then accessed my movies through the family sharing option under purchased films and low and behold all the films I'm having issues with are all loading fine.

They really aren't the same. The newest Roku can output 4K from Netflix, the AppleTV 4 cannot. In addition, Roku provides access to virtually every streaming sources offered by AppleTV 4, the reverse is not the case. Apple may have Roku on UI ... but that's about it. Even the Amazon Fire, which is also missing 4K for now, has the app edge over Apple in that it offers Amazon Prime ... one of the big 3 that Apple continues to leave out.
Fire TV is 4K.

The Apple TV may have Roku on the UI?! The Roku UI is very dated, like something from 1996. And 1/3 of the Roku UI is taken up by a giant ad (usually trying to sell you a subscription to various services which Roku gets a cut of but I have also seen some for Subaru). No thanks:

I have the Roku 4, and have had it for about a week and a half now. The UI, I understand for the new model has been re-designed since previous editions - the Roku 4 is my first experience with them. I'm quite happy with the look and feel its modern too.

As for ads, so far, I haven't seen any ads throughout the menus. The only place I see ads are before, and sometimes during programs on certain channels.

Are the movies stored locally on a Mac/PC running iTunes (Home Sharing)? Or are you streaming them?

If you can, download and see if it'll work with the original AppleID.
I would if I could but have nothing to download them to.
Anyhow I've got access to them again so not a major concern just yet.

Yeah, I am not a fan of half the screen being taken up by a big ad, either. IMO The AppleTV has a much better UI. I love the ability to have my favorites at the top and a few folders at the bottom for specific categories. The scrolling until you see the app you want is tedious and it is easy to miss it.

I had the first gen and the little black Apple TV and they were both a nightmare - randomly dropped connection, needed restarting regularly etc. etc. In the end I went back to renting DVDs from Blockbuster and Love Film.

Chromecast has since given me fault-free streaming. I don't think I'd consider another Apple TV, regardless of the features it offers when the two I had couldn't get the basics right.

You had trouble with an ATV3?

Thats the first time I've ever heard someone have a problem with it.

Don't know if it was the ATV3, but it was the little black 'puck' that didn't have an internal drive.

That would be either an ATV 2 or ATV 3. I have one of each, plus an ATV 4 and in my experience, they've all been rock solid as far as connectivity goes and being a stable system. YMMV

I can only speak from experience.

My first ATV = awful. Second ATV = just as awful. Chromecast = fine.

Definitely unusual on the second ATV. I had two of them and they both worked great. I also have a Chromecast, but don't use it very often. I don't like the limitations on the number of apps available for Casting, but I got it as a gift, so I can't complain.

I have the roku 3 and it has a big ad on the right side of the screen in the home screen

Ours work great, we have 5 at home, all 32GB. They're in the guest bedrooms and people that spend the night that have never used an AppleTV before seem to like them well enough. We use them daily and they've pretty much completely replaced DirecTV, which I'll be glad when it does replace it completely as that's another $230+ / month subscription I'll be glad to get rid of.
