Anyone else think the apple case isn't a good idea? you put it on a desk or something with the side that touches the screen when closed. Then u close it and whatever dust or dirt is stuck to the flap will rub against the glass screen while its in ur bag or whatever.. I don't really care for it..

The Apple flip case looks downright snazzy. There won't be a better way to say "I'm important" without actually being important than carrying one.

keyboard and mouse

i think it would work better if you could create some separation from the keyboard to the screen. Have a base station and a wireless keyboard. otherwise seems like you'll have to be too hunched over to type and view.

also, if you are going to have a keyboard .... wouldn't it also be nice to be able to use a mouse... although apple is working on adding touch to its desktops, the current system with cursor and mouse works pretty nicely.

so if you are sitting on your chair with the ipad propped up, wouldn't it be nice to not have to lean forward to adjust/move around. add a curser layer to the OS ...

While I understand the desire to copy photos from a camera card to a device with a larger, higher quality display, there really isn't the sufficient capacity multiple to make that more than a niche task.

A 64GB device already used for apps, books, music and podcasts doesn't offer much room for repeatedly downloading 8GB camera cards.

I certainly welcome more entrants to the iPad accessory market. While the folding cover from Apple looks good I'm sure many people will want something a little different. Likewise a keyboard that attaches directly to the display, notebook style, is far from the best arrangement for data input. Unless all you have to work on is your lap, the keyboard should be at least 16" in front of the screen and offer an integrated trackpad or USB port for a mouse/trackball/pen-driven tablet/etc. As others have said, a folding keyboard is best for people on the go.

Does anyone know if the iPad will be able to update its system software *without* iTunes, and be able to back up its contents to say a Time Capsule, directly?

It seems to me that if it is really going to be able to replace a desktop or laptop for some people, it would have to be able to do this.

Apple has never said the iPad would "replace" anything.

And as far as I know you will need iTunes to back it up.

We don't know, though we can say with certainty that with the iPhone OS as we know it the answer is now. However, this is a decision on Apple's part, not a technical limitation. Also, we can be all but certain that mid-March will bring an iPhone (and now iPad) OS show which will undoubtedly reveal much that was not included in the iPad's introduction. Will it include that feature? Maybe, maybe not - though I would certainly welcome it as I plan to use an iPad as my primary computer on Day 1. I will retain my iMac as a central media hub for my house, and for updating the OS...

Camera, anyone?

One smart move would be for a 3rd party to offer a good camera module with decent glass and a good-resolution chip and LED flash (offer features such as zoom and actual control over focus and exposure in higher-end models -- if the unit passes the chip's data along to the iPad for viewing and saving the shot, this potentially becomes much cheaper hardware than it might seem).

Can you imagine being able to frame and focus hi-res shots on that big iPad screen? --then snap the photo and edit and tweak it with various apps or even an iPad version of Preview (with its surprisingly capable "Edit Colors" palette)? Offer a small camera module at a good price, say $100 -$150 or so, that simply plugs into the iPad's primary interface and you'd have a lot of takers; I'd be one.

I would love to see keyboard that the iPad would dock into and give it a Vadem Clio like function. You could have you card reader and a second battery in it also.

Of course then you would have an iPhone OS powered netbook.

I'm not an iPad fan (real OS warrior), but that case with the flap fold is pretty nifty really. Will that be an official Apple case? Or is it something Apple has announced knowing that it's in development elsewhere?

I guess you didn't watch the keynote. The case and stands were all announced the same day Apple announced the iPad. It's an official Apple case.

I said will be able to, not that Apple said it. Some people will no doubt be attracted to the iPad because it does everything they want a computer to do. Those people will be disappointed if they don't have a viable backup solution.

iPhone COULD have a keyboard

Soon as someone figures out how to hook up a wired keyboard at all. IIRC, the USB port is only a device port, not a host port.]

The port on an iPhone takes input from the Nike accessory, so doesn't that imply that it should be able to take other input... such as from a keyboard?

But in any event, it is up to Apple. Either it can't be done with the current iPhone port; or it can be done, but Apple won't allow it. In either case, they could allow it. How hard would it be to allow iPhone input from a keyboard? If not by physical connection, then by bluetooth?

Sure, you can do it with the iPad, but maybe some of us don't want to try to carry an iPad in our pocket. That's the whole point of a smartphone... it's not the phone, it's the smart. I (and plenty of other people) want to be able to carry a computer and keyboard in my pocket... and to be able to type more than a few sentences without my thumbs cramping. A small, foldable iPhone keyboard would be vastly better than an iPad for that purpose.

(And Apple shouldn't be worried about internal product competition... I'd still like an iPad. It's just that I will never take an iPad everywhere, while my iPhone does go everywhere. Why the heck won't Apple allow me to type into my iPhone an a human-usable keyboard?)

...and docking adapters to allow users to connect their digital cameras to the iPad for photo transfers.

Typical Apple...gotta exclude Standards (USB ports) so now we have to buy "adapters".

Ohh, that "adapter" you buy (for likely $29) will only allow a camera...heaven forbid it have any other purpose.

All these accessories (especially manufactured by Apple) just turn this pad thing into a pseudo-laptop.

Make up your mind, Apple! Is this thing truly a magical, revolutionary handheld device or just your answer to the netbook and inexpensive laptop market?

a wireless keyboard along with Apple's case would make a nice mix. :)
That way you could stand the iPad up either way. and not use up screen real estate for the on screen keyboard.

Yes, absolutely! I want a variation of the Apple folder case that has a keyboard in it and can flip open and use like a laptop. That way I can either do that, or fold it back and use it like a tablet. The Apple keyboards are thin enough I think you could get away with it.

Um, I doubt it. There's a lip around the iPad that the lid would rest against. That would leave a reasonable gap between the screen and the lid. That would have to be one LARGE speck of dust....
