IMO that Apple foldable cover looks very very unstable as stand, and just plain ugly. It just tell how uncreative the design of the iPad case is, with no embedded solution (or at least a clip-on one) for screen protection and standing iPad. I really hope someone else will come up with a nicer cover/stand.

Anyone else think the apple case isn't a good idea? you put it on a desk or something with the side that touches the screen when closed. Then u close it and whatever dust or dirt is stuck to the flap will rub against the glass screen while its in ur bag or whatever.. I don't really care for it..

The thought here is that you need to clean your apartment more often and probably solve several other problems at the same time.

While I understand the desire to copy photos from a camera card to a device with a larger, higher quality display, there really isn't the sufficient capacity multiple to make that more than a niche task.

A 64GB device already used for apps, books, music and podcasts doesn't offer much room for repeatedly downloading 8GB camera cards.

I disagree. We want to be able to upload, look at the pictures in something other than the small LCD and delete the majority of them. We might only keep one photo in 10 that are exceptional. If you are keeping every photo, then I agree, but I think having a spare 32 GB would probably handle us for a week's vacation.

Typical Apple...gotta exclude Standards (USB ports) so now we have to buy "adapters".

Ohh, that "adapter" you buy (for likely $29) will only allow a camera...heaven forbid it have any other purpose.

All these accessories (especially manufactured by Apple) just turn this pad thing into a pseudo-laptop.

Make up your mind, Apple! Is this thing truly a magical, revolutionary handheld device or just your answer to the netbook and inexpensive laptop market?

Yeah, it's $29, but can connect via USB or SD card. I suspect that the reason a USB isn't included is because of the thickness of the iPad. USB is a pretty thick slot.

I was shopping for a murse way before the iPad was announced, and since announcement I've been looking for a good cover, skin, additional/better bags. I got one at Marshall's made by Icon, called the Netbook Slim Case (prod. # ADSLV12-BLK), that I know is the perfect size, has shoulder strap and several pockets. I've also picked up one at Fry's that is bigger, and even more storage without it looking like a laptop bag.

I've been dreaming of Otterbox developing a case for the iPad similar to the Defender for the iPhone 3GS, but they haven't gotten on the ball yet.

Kudos to all the companies with the foresight that this will be a big hit and start designing before the iPad was announced.

The silicone skins are nice, but I may have to go with Apple's black conference pad-looking thing: all you need are a couple of slits inside for a few credit cards and an ID so you can take this puppy with you all over the place.

Now I'm thinking about getting rid of the iPhone and just getting a plain looking cheap phone, and toting the Wi-Fi+3G iPad with me at all times.

I can't wait, I'm literally checking the Internet almost every few hours for iPad info, bags, covers, you name it.

It is amazing that a 4 billion dollar a year industry exists just for making accessories for the iPod/iPhone.

The idea of an iPad with keyboard dock is both weird and cool. Reminds me of what I thought of the old PowerBook Duo setup.

Also reminds me of the original Mac. A little rectangular desktop with a tiny screen and a tiny footprint.

There will be all kinds of crazy cases, keyboards, and both combined! Apple’s case looks useful up to a point, but I’d never get it, knowing so many more options are on the way.

You make a good point there. Perhaps that explains why Apple left the camera out of the iPad to start with.

I certainly welcome more entrants to the iPad accessory market. While the folding cover from Apple looks good I'm sure many people will want something a little different.

I'm sure that the iPad will draw a lot of accessory designers to support it. Its geometry begs to be accessorized.

Likewise a keyboard that attaches directly to the display, notebook style, is far from the best arrangement for data input. Unless all you have to work on is your lap, the keyboard should be at least 16" in front of the screen and offer an integrated trackpad or USB port for a mouse/trackball/pen-driven tablet/etc.

Here's where I partially disagree with you. My MBP keyboard is one inch from the bottom of my screen. I have zero problem with that. What I do find odd is that Apple didn't include a touchpad below the space bar, a la the MBP. If I'm busy typing and want to scroll back and forth on my document, or move my insertion point, I'l like to keep my hands by the keys.

USB is a pretty thick slot.
But Micro-USB isn't, and has a host-side socket (Micro-A) and host-or-device socket (Micro-AB) in addition to device-only socket (Micro-B). Physically, it's just as thin and half as wide as the Apple iPod dock connector and half as thick as the Mini-B that you see on most cameras and small USB peripherals.

There's also the USB On-The-Go standard that lets a port be either a host (download from camera) or device (sync with computer or charge).

My iPhone's mophie battery pack has a Micro-B connector on it for both charging and syncing. It works swell.

Back on topic, the problem with just sticking a USB port on an iPhone or iPad isn'tthe hardware. It's the software. The "I want USB" crowd gets replaced with the "My USB device doesn't work on it" crowd. I have no idea if the App Store is set up for driver downloads.

While that would be nice, putting a touchpad on the iPad keyboard would both make it more expensive, bigger, and somewhat confusing since the iPhone OS does not have the concept of a mouse-like "pointer", which a touchpad user could expect.

I would love to use the iPad for visual presentations but want it horizontal so the doc it out for that. The folding case might work IF it can be adjusted so the pad angles higher up almost standing at a slant (but in horizontal mode). I assume nobody knows if this is possible yet?

Absolutely!

In December, I visited Munich and Salzburg, for a week altogether, and took about 16 GB of pics, I shoot both JPG and RAW, but even then some pics weren't worth it, so they'll get deleted. A good photographer takes many shots and then after comparing all decides which one is truly the best. I totally understand when you said that "we only keep one photo in 10". With the iPad, you now don't have to take your laptop on vacation. Just take your iPad and DSLR. At the end of the day, pop out the SD card and connect it to the iPad with the tiny adapter (that so many people say "oh gosh, another adapter?!", folks it's just half the size of credit card!!!) and get your pics to the iPad, then weed out the bad pictures, while waiting to fall asleep, and the next day erase your SD card, pop it back into the DSLR: you're good to go.

All the fuss people are making about the iPad not having a built-in espresso maker, toaster over, etc, just drives me up the wall. I'll have completed my Master's this Fall, and the most I've used my iMac for is for Word every week, and Excel maybe once or twice during the last 3 years. Other than that, it's just Mail, Safari, iTunes, and iPhoto: all functions the iPad will do rather well. For a large majority of users, this is also the case. I understand some techies want raw power, but if the vast majority of people just use basic things, the market will gravitate to that demographic.

"The needs of the many are outweighed by the needs of the few or the one."

I'll be getting the leathery plastic Apple brand jacket to put mine in. So unless it breaks I won't be after another. Too bad the case companies want to drag their feet like fools.

USB ports come in many flavors...

USB-A
USB-B
Mini-B
Micro-AB
Micro-B

The iPad, like many digital cameras and external drives, could have easily used the numerous small USB connections. But instead it's more re-inventing the wheel for Apple and socking it to the consumers for a $29 add-on that will likely be lost within 6 months.

But again, it all goes back to my statement that Apple can't seem to figure out what the iPad should be. My guess is the iPad will sell well for a few months, then become another AppleTV.

OT a bit, I'd love to see a cheaper Mac laptop (without Apple simply cutting corners) say in the $799 range (instead of $999) as well as some cheaper desktops that do NOT come with a monitor and are more powerful than the Mini. Or heck, just seriously beef up the Mini (ram and quad core) and cut its cost a bit to make it more reasonable for above average/power users...say $699 for a quad core 4gig unit with a 160G 7200RPM drive (instead of 5400 turtles).

I'm wondering if the dock and keyboard dock will work while the iPad is in the case, or if you'll have to keep pulling the iPad out to dock.

Hi,

I would really like to see what company's like Blue Microphone come up with for the iPad. Their upcoming Blue Mikey v2 for the iPhone looks great and with the larger screen of the iPad I am sure their App will be that much more flexible with recording audio.
