If selling 2.5 million of something no one else on the planet was able to in 5 minutes is a failure, I would like to be a failure. :D

They literally stocked only 5000 black sports. This is some BS waiting till mid may.

They don't stock, that's one of the characteristic of Apple launches, as soon as your product is assembled by the chinese kids at Foxconn, it's shipped through UPS all the way to your door; many people have reported the glue not being dry on their screen by the time they get their phones (yellow tint).
Apple doesn't even touch your product, no inventory (storage, security...) cost associated with those launches.

Whether it was announced 7 months ago or a week ago doesn't change a thing...

Server did not crash - that's a good thing. I hate hate hate the fact that they did not have the try-on appointment or anything for us to at least look at the watch in person before we had to preorder. By the time somebody makes it the store to look at it, the shipment will be in June already.

This is perhaps the most mystifying aspect of the whole thing for me. I can't think of any scenario in which the decision to start preorders at midnight followed by try-ons at the start of business the next day makes any sense at all. They should've started try-ons one week before preorders. It wouldn't have made a difference for me, since I live too far from an Apple Store, but for many people it would've eliminated the confusion over sizing, as well as people making double orders just for "insurance" that they bought the right size.

This number is provided courtesy of Apples ultra creative, never modest, Hollywood supplied Hype Machine. A never ending source of Pro Apple stories, it's worth its weight in Gold. It's certainly kept me entertained over the years.

Failure? Apples nearly unlimited supply of cash enables them to declare anything they sell a success. Too big to fail, at least for a few more decades, it's good to be Apple :)

Apple hasn't said anything about sales figures, have they? It's all "analysts." And I've got to say, Apple tends to be a lot more conservative than many companies in accounting for its sales. A lot of companies count things "sold" to retail stores as sales, even though no actual customers have bought them.

There is nothing stoping you from ordering several and canceling the ones you don't like before the charges hit your bank account.

They thought the watches were beautiful on the computer screen and people could just imagine themselves how they would look with one on their wrist without seeing the watches in person (perhaps it would work if you smoke crack and look at the pics online at the same time before preordering the product). I am getting a sport, but I will return it / sell it before my SS arrives in June.

I have resigned to the fact that this launch was botched by Apple. But other than being able to flaunt that you have the watch before anyone else. What is the big deal with waiting?

You're right.

Apple never gets caught out, one of the most cunning, clever companies on the planet, I have tremendous admiration for the masterful marketing and spin control they do.

The proof is in writing contained within the annual report I receive as a shareholder since 1992. With a fairly broad portfolio of other world class companies, I have a number of annual reports to compare. Apples is indeed one of the interesting ones. With staggering numbers one comes away with an entirely different perspective than prior to reading one.

How does it favor oversea orders? Everyone starts at the same time. If if rolled by time zone then EST, CST, and on west would really have something to complain about.

I don't know about you, but I would say most people on the east coast weren't excited about getting up 3 am to order a watch. In comparison, those in UK, for example, wouldn't have to get up in the middle of the night.
