I called and got the automated upgrade message. Now they are experiencing problems. I got to the last step and it gave me an error. This sucks.

I waited 2 hours, then called AT&T. They said there was nothing they could do to get it activated. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I just got off the phone with ATT. He told me that the automated activation system that is usually handled over the phone with the automated prompts wasnt working (probably overloaded). He took my sim card # and iemi number and i was good to go after he updated the system. I would suggest this would be the way to go. If they say there is nothing they can do, I would remind ATT that you have an iphone 5. my guy told me that my new iphone 4s should be activated but i had to explain that i had a new iphone 5. The automated system is not letting ATT know that you now have a new 5 so everything on their end looks fine, hence the iphone 5 reminder.

this worked like a charm
https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/

after i did this, i just ejected the sim, re-inserted it. my old phone stopped working and the new one worked in a few seconds

I tried this and was got an error message that "iPhone users must connect to iTunes" to activate. Of course, I *have* connected to iTunes but am unable to use data or calls on my new phone.

It is amazing that it is always this difficult for AT&T every year.

mine activated without any problems. i had to restart my phone tho before i was able to send/receive calls/messages.

My phone wasn't listed to activate (meaning it has already activated) but still has no data connection, nor can I make any calls.

Ok thought I'd share in case this is a shared experience. My new i5 was only showing 4G and I'm in an LTE area. I upgraded from an iPhone 4 with unlimited data. The Tech said that because my old unlimited data was a 3G plan, they have to go in to the account to change it to accept LTE. She did something while I was on he phone, had me power down and power up and the LTE worked. She called me a couple minutes later to confirm.

So if you are in this situation a call to AT&T will eventually fix things.

I called AT&T to do an upgrade swap, took about 10 min as the rep advised me the only way she could activate it on my line (vs. my wife's that the upgrade was tied to) was to change from our mobile share to a minutes based plan, add it to my line, then switch it back to the mobile share plan. Anyways, was very nice, even waived the upgrade activation fee without me asking, and my phone was up and running with full functionality, including LTE. Plus I only probably waited about a minute to get connected to a rep when I called at about 10 am EST.

I had a similar experience. We have 2 iPhone 4's that we upgraded to the 5. We are on the Mobile Share plan. Phones did NOT activate when I set them up.

- First call to AT&T guy said he can NOT activate them. I said...um ok, that's weird.

- Called back got a very nice lady that had to move us off Mobile Share to activate, then move us back.

No idea why.....but I was on the phone for at least 30 minutes.

They really need to get a better system.

I'm on the line w/AT&T and hear their hold music.

The odd thing for me is, everytime i turn on my IP5. It makes me enter my apple ID and pass. The prompt comes up though, with someone else's APPLE ID. I dont recognize this email, have never had anyone use the iphone besides me.

I performed all the steps necessary for activation and 3 hrs later, nothing.

Yeah, I've had the random email addresses thing happen to me.

I'm coming up on four hours with no activation.

No go for me either. 4 1/2 hours later. Tried resetting the phone, turning both off, etc. Waiting on hold for att 1 hour later still waiting.

No, I had the random email address problem last year when I got my 4S.

The AT&T reps I have spoken with have said that they haven't heard of any other customers having problems activating….

They are att reps... of course they haven't heard of any issues!

I called the number premier game 1-866-499-8008 and though I was on the phone for 30 minutes, they helped me pretty quickly and now I'm up and running on my ip5.:apple:

i on the phone with att.. they ask me to take the sim card out. I bent the sim card slot. I'm so pissed! Hotter than fish grease!

it gets worse. i can not get the sim card out. I'm practically bending the sim card slot and damaging my new phone! Now they are asking me to go to an ATT store for them to help!

This isn't cool at all!

Ok, I feel like a dork. I logged on to the ATT page that was provided in the shipping email, then got to a pending message, and now nothing. I see people saying they called ATT and got a bot, but I'm not sure if you are calling from another phone or the new phone (which I can't call from). I'm activated on iTunes, but no cellular.

Now on hold with a very nice French gentleman at ATT. Apparently this is somehow connected to the datashare plan. He's not sure how to fix it though.

I had to contact them. Evidently they knew I was upgrading but when I activated the ICCID and IMEI never transfered to AT&T. Had to get them to manually activate me.

I called and they got mine going. One side of their system updated, but a second did not. Your phone won't work until both are in sync. Once she synched them, she had me reboot, and viol-ah....it worked.
