I kept getting the "activation server is unavailable" message so I started the update and unplugged my computers network cable and now the phone is getting updated.... soo goood!

Update just finished, and phone is starting up...fingers crossed

ALL GOOD! Using this method works!

LOL! The joy of trying to be first! Enjoy your frustrations. I'll upgrade next week when all the kinks are worked out.

If you do the "unplug internet" technique does the iphone need to activate after the OS is installed?

What happened to any of you who did tried this and completed the installation?

And of course as soon as I post that and give it one last try itunes finally connected the server!

Used "the method" and had no more problems. 3.0 is installed, running, purring, and I'm exploring as I type :)

I was getting the same "Activation server not found" message... so I clicked on the Iphone update button update & then when it said checking software or whatever, I opened my network connections & disable the NIC. The update then said software installing & I then RE-Enabled my NIC card on my PC... it's all good now.

Thanks for the know how!

haha another reason to love macrumors

people know some crazy ideas but worked pretty well.. haha. turning off my airport actually worked!!

so a round of applause for the guy who told us to do it his way hahahahah :):);)

Nice... update finished & now my ITunes screen says "We're sorry. We are unable to read the SIM card.... Mother!#$@%&... It just happened so maybe it's not really hosed as I haven't tried looking into it

i can also verify that if you turn off airport during the activation box thing, that it does just skip it and then installs 3.0

thanks to the OP of that process.

No problems...

Started download at about 10:15 pdt and had the 3.0 installed and running by 10:40am pdt. Not one issue with the process....

I just used the method of turning off Airport to skip the error screen and now my phone was put into recovery mode when the bar on the iPhone screen was almost full..... How do I get my iPhone out of recovery mode and install 3.0?!

I got up at 5am to install this update before heading off to work and an hour later still cannot do because of that stupid server error. Come on Apple surely you realised there was going to be so many people updating their iPhones!! Well I'll leave it for a few days now. I'm tired and annoyed!

Bern try the internet turned off method, it works like a charm! ;)

Server error message

I got the same error message about the activation server not being available, but just kept trying. It took about 20 tries before I finally got through. Just keep at it and you'll get there eventually. Obviously, lots of folks trying to get it at the same time.
