It's obvious from the tone of the keynote that they knew Steve wasn't doing well.

Add this with the fact that there was no public feed of the even even through they were more than capable of doing so. They wanted to keep that door open if he was able to with a much smaller, far more controlled, venue.

Wishful thinking but doesn't jibe with this.

A few weeks ago, I visited Jobs for the last time in his Palo Alto, Calif., home. He had moved to a downstairs bedroom because he was too weak to go up and down stairs. He was curled up in some pain, but his mind was still sharp and his humor vibrant. We talked about his childhood, and he gave me some pictures of his father and family to use in my biography. As a writer, I was used to being detached, but I was hit by a wave of sadness as I tried to say goodbye. In order to mask my emotion, I asked the one question that was still puzzling me: Why had he been so eager, during close to 50 interviews and conversations over the course of two years, to open up so much for a book when he was usually so private? “I wanted my kids to know me,” he said. “I wasn’t always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did.

My wife suggested it was the negative reaction to the iPhone 4S announcement that finally did him in.

Has the reaction actually been that negative? Or is it just on these forums from people wanting a bigger screen?

Knowing that Steve was possibly close to death would have cast a very dark cloud over the event. It's possible even that he had a relapse that morning - hence the empty chair etc. That sort of news overnight would have been very upsetting for Tim Cook et al

he asked him enjoy his last dinner with his children, just an assumption.

what? last dinner? the man was not on death row. he had cancer. he probably hadn't "enjoyed" any meal in weeks.

I've experienced friends and family members passing away from cancer and other ailments. In each case we knew when the time was close; but varied from hours to days.

Conspiracy theories are popular because they're so hard to disprove; the response to most typical rebuttals is that whatever evidence could be faked.

So believe what makes you happy. It's not worth debating, since I don't see where it really matters. The man is gone, hopefully he imbued enough of his personality in the company that it continues forwards as he would have led it.

Exactly right. Sadly I imagine he would have been fed by intravenous drip by the end.

Look can we just stop this thread? It seems pretty distasteful to the memory of a man who has just lost a long battle with cancer. As my father is battling prostate cancer I can only begin to imagine the family's grief.

As a moderator who is supposed to set an example, why would you post this?

Has the reaction actually been that negative? Or is it just on these forums from people wanting a bigger screen?

Exactly. I think people fail to realize bigger screen =/= bigger you know what

I think Jobs passed on Wednesday, as reported.

Scoble claims things took a turn for the worse of the weekend so everyone know it was close: https://plus.google.com/111091089527727420853/posts/9RqvqJeC8vs

And we got a tip at 6am on Wed that one of his family members who lives in LA was told to drop everything and go to Jobs's side. And that people were gathering to pay their last goodbyes.

so no reason to believe things are not as they were announced.

Thanks Arn

Hopefully that information draws the thread to a close.

I don't think they would manipulate the news for the sake of 4s press.

If you believe they are that evil, then it would have made sense to pay tribute to him during the event and connect the dots with the 4s for sales reasons.

Either way, the news of his passing was going to overshadow any product announcement they could have possibly made. There was no reason to manipulate anything.

I doubt it because it would blow up in their face. A lot of sympathy lost.

Who knows when he really died. He would never have allowed his death to be reported before the iPhone event or during trading hours. A businessman till the end!

It definitely makes sense for them not to announce his grave condition it would have over shadowed the event

I was wondering if the "Reserved" seat in the video might have been a thoughtful gesture for Steve as he must have been very sick at the time...:(

I am sure that was a seat for Steve, even though he most likely was not going to be there. That was his seat to be there in spirit. I hope that events going forward have a seat for him.
