That’s because there really isn’t a ‘target demographic’ for $1200 units. I’m not chastising the functionality of what Alpine is offering, but are average consumers really spending this type of money on a 2014 Subaru for example? I doubt it. They probably would rather just trade in/upgrade to a vehicle that actually offers built-in CarPlay when that time happens. If you think about the cost of this unit and what it cost to have installed, that’s a pretty hefty investment, which if I were to buy something like this, I would be thinking logically, how long does one plan on keeping their vehicle?
I drive an 2019 BMW X1 without Apple Car because BMW used to charge an arm and leg for it. They asked for additional 4,000$ package which includes CarPlay and I didn’t need any of the other additional features. For 1,200$, this is not cheap, but cheaper than what luxury brands are charging for functionality that should be included for free.

And I will not buy a new car for the infotainment system, not even a nerd like me can do that.

What's this about reverse camera requirements? A new law?
Not sure if it's state or national law, but Illinois has had a law for a while mandating all new cars must have a reverse camera. I bought my car before the law, but I made sure it had one just in case. The fact that a coworker's wife accidentally ran over their dog only reinforced my wanting to get one.

I have no idea about USA but it's the Law in Canada since May 2018.
Interesting interesting, yeah I tried googling to see if it was a recent US law but couldn't find anything. Thanks for the info.

And someone should invent a way to use an iPad for CarPlay. For $1200 you could have a freaking 12” M1 iPad in your car.
I did just that with widgets and bookmarks.

It looks awesome and I have been considering an aftermarket deck for my older Honda Ridgeline to get car play. But I don't want to pay that much. I'm going to be talking with a local car audio company in the spring though so we'll see what things really cost.

Added wireless CarPlay with a chincy USB adapter from Amazon. Actually works great 99% of the time. ??‍♂️

It’s 2022. I don’t understand the target market of aftermarket entertainment units especially with manufacturers being required to include screens and backup cameras due to new regulations from 2018.
It turns out that some people still drive cars older than the 2018 model year. Crazy.

That’s awesome, can it load other things like AC controls?
I don’t know but I doubt it at least with the software I have. Also, my vehicles are a 1998 and a 2000 so any of those options wouldn’t be available back then anyway.

That said, here's another segment that's missed: ever use CarPlay in a newer GM vehicle? It SUCKS. They crippled it to the point that it's less usable and I'd even argue unsafe. Just because a newer car has CarPlay standard doesn't mean it's a good implementation and doesn't mean it's wireless. I'd think MOST cars on the road in the US could benefit from aftermarket units like this, factory CarPlay or not.
What problem do you see in CarPlay on GM?
I use it on a 2017 Volt and have no problems.

It's been a few years since I encountered this, but the major things I recall in a Jeep Cherokee:
  • Not possible to navigate a list (i.e., Artists in the Music app) using the alphabetical letter picker thing. You have to scroll.
  • No inertial swipe scrolling. You have to use the arrow buttons.
  • Horribly ugly buttons within the UI. Everything was outlined like a Fisher Price My First Car Radio.
Those first two drove me INSANE. It was faster and easier to pick up my phone.

GM Stellantis / Chrysler may have fixed things since then. A buddy of mine who has done some work in UX for a few automakers was explaining a lot of them have internal rules around software capabilities and road safety. In the past, these rules enhanced safety. But today, they often cause less usable interfaces that could arguably reduce safety because they haven't been updated as tech has matured.

EDIT: Said GM. Meant Chrysler, which is now Stellantis.

Jeeps are not GM vehicles but that does sound pretty bad.

I think it would be cool (to at least SOME people anyways) if these infotainment systems could hook up to the ODB system so it could show car diagnostic info.
iDatalink Maestro makes an adapter that does exactly that.
My Pioneer stereo now shows my tire pressure, engine RPM, MPG, etc.

Check Crutchfield or SonicElectronix to see what fits, what other parts you need and how much it will all cost.

My dodge stratus uses 1.5 Din would be nice if they made them in that size other than double din. I like flush screens
not the floating look

Laggy and not secure.

TVs are heavily subsidized by data mining I would imagine 3/4ths end of online and its a ton of data they even send screenshots from connected devices etc. NextDNS (PiHole equivalent) really woke me up to what mine was doing and pushed me into buying an Apple TV.
Makes me glad I'm using a projector with zero internet connectivity.
