To be really honest, it's about connecting for me.

I have always been shy, introverted and was always the kid bullied in school. Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) in the 1980s were a way for me to reach out and be accepted by others who had the same interests I did. Forums are a natural progression of that and since I have an interest in Macs and other Apple hardware I come here and share with others.

Your opinion holds the same weight as mine and mine holds the same weight as others - no matter how long or short you've been here or in other places or for how long you've been interested in the things we discuss here.

Forums allow me to reach out beyond my front door and communicate with people I'd otherwise never know existed. See…you're in Turkey. How likely is it that I'd ever run across you in real life? The last time I was out of the States was 1983 and that was a week in London.

MR satisfies that need to connect with other people. That's why I'm here.

The Poltical, Religious, and Social Issues forum. I liked it, but many found it irrelevant to a tech site like MR and sometimes debate there would get a little out of hand. In the end I think the moderators, who made heroic efforts trying to keep things civil, reached their limit and the forum was shut down. For me that was a pity, for the people posting there were far more intelligent, educated, and interesting than the trolls who lurk in current affairs forums of most social media sites.

My main problem with the PRSI forum, other than the issues of out of hand users, was that your posts didn't count towards your post count.

Now, post count is not why I'm here. But if I'm going to vent my spleen on PRSI, expend valuable energy defending a point and making everybody see things my way (I'm joking on that last part) - I want my posts to count. They didn't, so I wasn't going to waste my time or my breath, or my energy.

You see PRSI as a place where intelligent conversation was to be found. I see it as a place for the airing of grievances where no one intends to change their opinion no matter how much evidence one way or the other they may be presented with. You can't reason with someone who came in there with an ax to grind. They aren't going to listen, much less consider and change.

That's the reason I left Facebook and it's the reason I stayed the hell away from PRSI.
