Yikes! I would hate my iPhone band to be peeling off like that. Not only does it look terrible, but a new attenagate may be brewing if that is representative of the wear and tear we are in for. And it is just not the most elegant of iPhone. There could be a backlash at how low end this phone looks for how much it costs.

Yeah because this is what the new phone will looks like on release day. Sheesh.

Amazing isn't it? I care about what is on the screen, the OS and apps. Anything else is minor. And if the camera is hugely improved I'll accept some protrusion. I do agree that making it flush and increasing the battery would be great.

Let's be honest, it's not minor.

You could have an amazing dining table, polished walnut wood with mahogany inlays, gold metalwork around the legs, all beautifully french polished.

They remove half an inch off one of the legs, so whilst everyone is sitting at the table eating their meal on fine china, the table keeps rocking every time anyone places any weight on the table.

Lovely table, but the experience is ruined.

Holding the table up the wobble is gone.
So Apple would make an anti-wobble case for the times you want to use your phone on a flat surface?

MTE! I don't get this whole whining about something that does't even look like a finished product. Not even close.
As if Apple would throw something like that on the market.

I have a feeling this time that Apple will surprise us. But I also think that the design will be close to that but more finished. This looks to me like an early stage of a prototype.

Edit: And no you can't make a device that is this large thicker. It wouldn't look good. So many people here already mentioned that.

Awesome! I knew i had seen that design somewhere else. Nice to see them trying something different.

Which doesn't speak for HTCs originality, since you said it looks like an HTC in first place ;)

But seriously, really it looks to me like they are using the current iPad Air and iPad Mini as design guide line for the iPhone 6.

i dont see a chance for special "camera mounts" back there. If people want better camera they'll just buy a normal camera. People need phone camera for taking quick pictures and i doubt it somebody would carry a special lens in their pocket next to the phone... sounds so stupid.

I'm sorry.

No way in a million years can I see Apple make anything look this nasty and horrid.

Let's say for a moment it was a magnetic area for addition lenses to line up and stick onto. You would made a circular magnetic recess around the camera lens, not something that stick out so that the iPhone rocks side to side when you place it on a flat surface.

The bands look horrid

The shiny Apple logo looks amazingly super cheap and nasty, like some chrome plated child's toy.

Simply put it looks a cheap, nasty early mock-up to test out some ideas.

The final version will look way way better than this. It MUST do.

Tim Cook must be an idiot. He's wasting millions of dollars on one of the world's most renowned industrial designers, when he could have the genius of "Piggie" for a fraction of the cost!

Nope. No chamfered edges on iPhone 6.

Uuuugly...

But I really don't believe in Sonny Dickson.

And I can't believe that it can get so scratched up if it's a leak from the factory? I have had my iPhone 5 for 2 years now, and not a single scratch, and this comes right from the factory with scratches?

Probably just some fake mockup he's got based on the schematics... Will wait and see next month!

Actually it does not.

Not special. Wake me when iPhone 7 comes around.

Will do! I kind of envy your increased productivity with all the time you’ll save not reading or posting in any iPhone 6 threads! :D

It _is_ minor (if it’s even the design for the production product).

I’m sitting at my desk, my iPhone is sitting here. Occasionally I’ll tap the home button to start/stop a podcast, or review a couple of notifications, if there’s anything of consequence (and 99% of them come to my Mac anyway...), I’ll pick up the phone and use it. If there was a 1-2mm raised section on one corner it wouldn’t make +any+ difference.

I’m mostly stoked about the camera improvements, and we skipped the S, so it’ll be nice to have TouchID (in case it wasn’t apparent, we’re “in line” for a 6 :D )

Actually it does not.

Sounds pretty nifty to me too. We’re almost always going to have our iPhones with us (and 98% of the time they’re our go to photo/video device), so pocketing a tiny lens on occasion seems like a more portable solutions than adding a whole camera (since the phone is a constant). If it’s super small, I could see someone making a keychain case for it.

I'm sorry, I'm not seeing this as the final product. I know it's a prototype, but it definitely has some work to do. I can see that being the camera lens but inserted "inside" the iPhone itself. it's not apple like to see something like this. I'll believe more come September 9th.

... Is it really any type of big deal? Not at all.

Take heed, drama queens; if you think this protrusion is a "problem", you can comfort yourselves by going back to ironing your socks.

You guys are freaking out over a slightly protruded camera lens? Really?

That's how it starts...first a protruding camera lens, then a bottle opener in a tacky chromed model. Oh, the humanity. I really feel Apple's product pipline is the worst (and ugliest) in 25 years.

You don't have to ask :)

That's like saying. I have a dead flat block of steel the same shape as an iPhone, I've superglued a penny on the back in one corner.
Will the device now rock when placed on a flat surface.

YES. You don't have to ask or experiment as that's common adult knowledge.

You CAN minimize it if the protrusion was wide enough and central, and the force applied to the front was minimal, then it would be hard to rock.

Or, as I say, place a tiny protrusion in the opposite corner, or distort the flatness of the back to take out the unevenness.

I don't need to stick a bit of extra wood onto the end of one table leg to know doing do will make the table wobble when placed on a hard flat surface.

Actually, no. a protrusion on the opposite corner would not eliminate rocking. You would need equal protrusions on all four corners.

Tim Cook must be an idiot. He's wasting millions of dollars on one of the world's most renowned industrial designers, when he could have the genius of "Piggie" for a fraction of the cost!

Yes.

One individual can easily see mistakes a multi million pound company with highly paid people can make.

Does not matter how much anyone is paid, they are only human and humans make mistakes, humans in groups make mistakes.

Does Samsung Make Mistakes?
Did Atari make any mistakes?
Did Commodore make mistakes?
Have Microsoft make any mistakes?
How about Blackberry?
What about Nokia?
Was Betamax marketed wrongly?
How about HD-DVD ?
How about the Apple Pippin?

Being big and rich and employing highly paid people means zero.

You could run off a list of Large Car and Motorcycle companies and find screw ups all over the place.

You don't HAVE to be anyone special to see a screw up.

I have a iPod Touch 5 and it has the same minor issue of the camera ring. I do not have it in a case and the camera ring protrusion doesn't bother me any more (you get used to it quickly). Everyone I know with an iPhone, keeps it in a case so the ring should be a non issue for iPhone 6 owners (other than the people trying to find something to complain about :D).

I think my favorite opinion on the lens protrusion is the "It's not like Apple to do that," despite many people pointing out the 5th Gen iPod Touch. Everyone realizes that Apple makes iPods right?

while I would rather they just made the decide as thick as the camera and then increase the battery size so the battery lasts longer and the lens doesn't protrude most people won't notice any difference because when you put a case on it it won't protrude past the case anyway.

Actually, no. a protrusion on the opposite corner would not eliminate rocking. You would need equal protrusions on all four corners.

No, you are wrong.

You would only need it in one corner at right angles to the protrusion to eliminate rocking.

You would need one at all the other corners only to make it dead level, but we are not talking about it being level, just the potential for rocking.

:)

Thinking about it more, no, it can't stick out. How about all the apps that have the built in spirit level thing.

Probably going to end up being flat, and this is simply a cheap mock up test.
It would mess too much up

Other phone manufacturers have an external protrusion around the lens and Apple has the same external ring around the lens in their iPod Touch 5.

Take heed, drama queens; if you think this protrusion is a "problem", you can comfort yourselves by going back to ironing your socks.

I agree. I will start off by saying that I have never lost a phone or had one stolen. I follow a very simple set of rules. #1. If your phone is not in your hand, it's in your pocket. #2. If your phone is not in your pocket, it's in your hand. The only exception to the rules is if you are in your home and it is charging or docked or if you are in your car and your phone has a mount/dock.

If you are at a restaurant and you have your phone on the table... Someone could spill a drink. Someone could snatch it if you aren't looking. You could just forget it when you leave.

I follow these rules and have never had an iPhone break, get lost or stolen.

So a protruding camera lens is a non-issue for me.
