So the Album has records sales with 2.8 million in the first five days. Pandora is now also streaming the album so one has to assume Apple was unwilling to meet the terms offered by her management.

Probably.. If I'm not mistaken, her label is small... she is their major (and perhaps one of their only) artists so perhaps they have specific requirements like you say.

Rumour has it they wanted the CD sold in Apple stores

Interesting to see ColdPlay's new album streaming on Google Play Music , Apple music and amazon prime UK.

But not spotify.

Anyone 'in the know'

Why miss spotify? is the non paying members the record company dont like about Spotify.

Also I cant get my head around the formula used below.
My all time favorite albums Pink Floyd 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and Steely Dan 'Aja'. I reckon in 40 years I have listened to each album in full between 100 and 200 times approx. These are my all time favorite two.
I love my music.

So how do they arrive at 1000?

You're looking at it wrong. Unless they're the only two albums you've ever listened to.

It's total plays of the 12 most streamed tracks. That's now only just over 84 plays through of the album.

The formula reflects the value those people are paying for the album. If 84 people stream it id guess the artist still gets less money than one buying it.

thanks for your reply

I understand that formulae is more when paying out weekly/monthly royalties for steaming.

But not for working out the charts.

I need a bit of time I think to fully understand this, but it seems for the UK charts that just one bought cd/ complete download album counts as one point v streaming which counts as 0.012 points.

Also why include the whole catalogue why not just the _new_ album tracks.

So if you want 'a number one' your streaming catalogue songs need playing 83 times to count for one cd purchase.

First what has the whole catalogue got to do with a new album - only count the new albums songs.

Second 0.012 points is too low.

If I was one of the larger artists I would not _initially_ release my album on any streaming site based on these 0.012 figures.

I would rely on physical and download sales, for about 4 maybe more weeks.

Then stream.

cheers

the whole point of the chart in the first place is to reflect success. traditionally, the number one album sold the most and therefore you can assume the artist made the most money, which most people would equate to "success".

streaming messes this up. artists don't get paid in the same way. if someone has a billion streams but sells 1 album, and I sell 2 albums made in my attic, do i deserve to be higher up the charts? probably not. hence the new formula. while it is somewhat applicable to royalties i believe they are paid per track (so it is slightly different).

i'm not sure why you're talking about the whole catalogue. look at the picture you provided - 12 most streamed songs *from an album*. if i stream something from an 80's artist's first album, it counts towards that album in the charts.

i think you're still thinking about this the wrong way. if i bought "sorry" by justin bieber when it came out (i'm not using adele as the example, she's not streaming the rest) then thats it, done with, finished. it doesn't count towards his album's sales at all even if i play the song 100 times. if i stream it 50 of those times after the album comes out, it does count, each and every one of those 50 times. if i buy adele's album and listen to it 10 times, it counts once. if i could stream it 10 times - etc.
