If you allocate the partitions manually using mac-fdisk (and make the filesystems), you'll be able to use them in Horizon with the middle option "Manually select partitions".
ah, very good ! so Horizon does allow this and we're not restricted to a fixed partition scheme built on an empty/emptied disk space, great news (the opposite would be a tad disappointing TBH). And thanxx again for posting a while ago a kind of tutorial on how to do this. :)

Now I still have plenty to discover, to begin with having a functional network connection, which Adélie does not trigger automatically at install if I understand correctly. But again I think I'd rather start a separate thread aimed specifically at my machine (and lack of expertise :?).

Incorrect. An installed Adélie will often inherit the configuration of the booted installer environment, thus if it doesn't change an installed Adélie should pick it up right away.

If you're looking for wifi though, you're best to look elsewhere, as Adélie doesn't include any Broadcom packages such as b43-fwcutter or firmware-b43-installer. As the underlying system is musl-based, your likely only option is compiling the firmware installers from source.

holy cr*p ! Guess I overlooked that fact, and at this point I can't imagine trying to do this, I wouldn't even know where/how to start... 😟
So I need to decide if Adélie's worth the effort for me. I'm already tethered AC power-wise due to a dead battery (can't find a replacement), but the need to also be tied to an ethernet cable all the time... :/

Edit : found this site with lots of info about the Broadcom wifi chips.

Anyway, at least I'll see how the install goes on my machine, which has the same configuration (same model, multi boot) as in this video :

Glad to there are a lot of people trying Adelie. I am currently trying to install Adelie-1 beta 5 XFCE version on a Dual Core, G5, with the install going to its own 250GB drive. I have 4 GB RAM and it drives a Radeon 9600 GPU. I have tried numerous methods trying to get this installed on the G5. I would really like to install KDE Plasma and I used Action Retro's earlier video about the horizon installer not working on Macs. I just viewed the video posted earlier in the thread and I haven't actually used the installer without doing manual partitioning etc.

I have successfully installed XFCE and it worked fine, just wasn't happy with it's limited applications, firefox not working and arctic fox sometimes working. The DE may not have anything to do with that.

I also had MATE installed.

In my attempts to install KDE, I ran into a kwin_11 and ksquashqml error when logging into KDE from sddm or I would log in and the screen would present the KDE Plasma cursor but a black screen.

Will try the installer to see if I can install KDE from the CD.

Wish me luck!

Downgrade and pin mesa to 24.1 with apk add "mesa<24.2" and you should have a working Plasma Desktop.

@Doq you rock!!! I am now staring at a beautiful KDE-Plasma desktop on my G5!!! Now here’s the kicker: since I was approaching the install of KDE Plasma in steps, I only installed plasma-desktop, as described in the 2020 video by action retro. It appears that plasma-desktop gets installed when you do “apk add KDE”.

That is going to be my next step as the aforementioned command will install all the KDE applications, icons wallpapers etc associated with KDE. I suspect I will run into the problem of logging into a black screen again because it’s very possible mesa may get installed as part of the KDE install. I’ll watch it carefully. If mesa gets upgraded in the KDE install I’ll downgrade it again. Although I’ve heard of “pinning” things in linux before, I’ve never done it and will need to read up on how it’s done. I’ll keep you posted!

UPDATE: KDE install went without a hitch. When I watched the ActionRetro video I got super excited seeing he was using an Apple Cinema Display (ACD). I have never been able to get this G5 to display a desktop (or much of anything) when I had the ACD connected to the GPU. So, on a whim, I first connected the ACD along with the DVI monitor to see if I could go dual monitor. Nope. Neither monitor worked. Then I started up with just the DVI monitor and then “hot plugged” the ACD and, although the display settings panel could see and identify the ACD there was no desktop displayed on the ACD. I dual boot this G5 with Leopard and Tiger on one drive and Adelie by itself on the other drive. I’ll see what it’s like having to make hardware changes when booting into one OS or the other.

Thanks again!

Thanks so much!
