Well I hate having to input my password all day long. So I am looking forward to having the scanner someday.

If you go into the touch ID page of settings where you can register new fingers, if you keep pressing down fingers that are already registered, it will re-calibrate the sensor to make it more accurate. You know it works when the finger that you rest on the sensor flashes, indicating that it is updating the sensor to better find that fingerprint when it touches.

Good on apple for adding that since sometimes the initial calibration can be a little wonky, after doing that a few extra times to make sure the entire finger is well noticed, I haven't had a "try again" since.

Hope this helps.

Let's all admit it, the fingerprint sensor on the 5s sucks. I have to re-register my fingerprint every couple of days. Everyone I know that has a 5s says the same thing. My wife has stopped using it all together. Meanwhile, the fingerprint reader on my thinkpad which is like 3yrs old still can read my fingerprint every time.

Why does this fingerprint reader on the 5s suck so bad?

Not having any issues with my phone at all.

No issues here.

Just one Very Important TIP when registering:

DO NOT keep your phone flat down and place your finger perfectly for the initial scans.

Instead hold the phone like you usually would and scan your fingerprint the first time that way. This made a HUGE difference for my sister.

How often is your finger placed perfectly on the sensor? Rarely, so register your fingerprint while holding the phone the way you usually would or usually would place your finger.

Mine works fine. I just find that it's not as useful of a feature as I hoped it would be and it's really annoying that it expires regularly as a form of iTunes Store authentication.

I would appreciate it more if I needed to keep my iPhone highly secure and had to punch in a complex passcode each time to unlock it. I went back to using the four digit simple passcode to unlock my phone because I just find that faster and more predictable.

If my fingers are wet or if the button isn't clean then it doesn't work. other then that it is perfect.

As some have mentioned in the thread, if I give the sensor a quick wipe with some type of cloth (i.e., clean it) it works 99% of the time.

Touch ID works about 95% of the time for me. I have four fingers registered, and my fiancee has her right thumb registered. Neither of us ever have issues. Even works for me most of the time after a shower, and when my hands are dry/slightly wet.

Overall, I'm very very impressed. Would be incredibly annoying to use the phone without it now. I have a hard time remembering to swipe to unlock my iPad Air.

I typically use my right thumb and no other fingers - problem is, it often gets dry/cracked or peels. I was disappointed with the touch ID consistency as well, having to reset every few days if my thumb got dry/cracked/peeled. As another poster pointed out, the trick is to register the same finger under multiple IDs, thus improving the accuracy and consistency. Since doing this a couple months ago I haven't had to reregister, and it works 90+% of the time. All 5 of the Touch IDs are registered to my right thumb, and it works really well.

As always, one data point != trend. Your experience is just your experience. Works fine for me.

Yes you are correct.

I have to readd it to work i just use a password now.

I've had my 5S since Friday and I've registered my thumb and index finger on both hands and it's worked flawlessly. I can only say that you've possibly not moved your finger around enough when placing it back down onto the sensor between scans so that it gets a complete image of your fingerprint.

The only time it's not worked is when a) my finger is greasy (I picked my phone up to read a text mid way through eating pizza and the scanner didn't recognise my print) and b) if a raindrop falls on the button and you then try to scan your finger ... the wet surface doesn't work.

I've gotten so used to Touch ID already that unlocking my iPad 'the old way' feels outdated and somewhat cumbersome.

Set up two fingers, my thumb and index. If the thumb doesn't work, the index usually does.

For those who have a problem, you waking the 5s with top button on/off/sleep instead of the bottom? On the bottom button, you placing your finger on it the same way you set it up? If I do not place my thumb or index straight up and do it more sideways, it does not work lots of times. Also, I notice the pressure I put on the button makes a differerence.

Now that I have completely lost you with what I tried to explain, I'll go away. :)

Spot on. The best way to set up Touch ID is to hold the phone like you usually do and them scan your print with your finger/thumb in the position you would do when pressing the home button. Exactly how I set up mine.

I registered my prints once, and it has worked consistently since last October. Sometimes it gets dirty, but I wipe it off and it works fine. I use it multiple times every day and have had no problems whatsoever.

Hmm, I'm trying to do what you say but I don't see that option. I'm in the touch ID section where you can add new fingers. I put my finger on the sensor and nothing happens. The only option is to either delete a finger, and/or add a new one. Can you elaborate?

EDIT: Ok I got it to work, that's pretty cool. It takes me like 5-10 times that I rest my thumb on the sensor before the finger flashes, then I can get it to flash 4 or 5 times in a row, then it stops flashing for 5-10 times, weird. Oddly, I have my right thumb registered twice, but I can only get the 2nd registration to flash.
