Although I rely on Adobe a lot for my design needs, I can safely say im happy with the lack of flash on my iPod Touch. Why? Because all I need to see now is an annoying advert saying "Build Your Army, My Lord", while browsing through Joystiq or Engadget etc. etc.

A few of you guys might know the ads im talking about, for that annoying game "Evony" or something, the one that rips off Age Of Empires and a few other games..

I don't like it when a company can't just admit that they've dropped the ball.

Jobs was right to criticize them. Flash has not operated on Mac the way it should for quite some time now, and companies that are content with an average product are NOT quality companies.

They'll be left in the dust if they don't get their act together.

Just a guess here- By top websites he MUST be referring to porn.

This would explain his smile.

The thing I love about being a Flash developer is that even if HTML5 kills flash on the web .. I still can use Flash to create Desktop applications that run on Mac/Windows/Linux ... and also Flash to create iPhone/Andriod apps.

So I say, who cares if HTML5 does better.. I'll just program in that also ... the future is mobile applications and Flash is far ahead there.

People quickly forget that the web isn't the only place Flash runs lol.

Assuming publishers, like Wired, use Adobe Air for their iPad apps, this will mean that there will be tons of "Flash" on the iPad. It will just be in a different form, and will be "isolated" within these stand alone apps. (Wired's demo using Adobe Air here.)

Safari on the iPad will continue not to support Flash, of course. But if the iPad is to be a success it will be because media people begin to create new, more exciting versions of their products for the device. Without being to use some version of Flash it will be nearly impossible for them to successfully migrate and reformat their content.

Not just lazy on FLASH

Adobe isn't just lazy on the Flash Player but the whole Adobe Suite in general. They need to really improve all their software for the Mac OS. I'm hoping they will with CS5 and lower their damn prices.

Web Design Premium: $1,699 Really Adobe?
Final Cut Studio: $999 That's a deal!

:apple:

I can't think of a single site that I visit regularly whose content is not available through my iphone. Most popular sites have adapted by creating iphone native apps or iphone-specific web apps. So thus far I have not missed having flash at all on my iphone.

wondering

Adobe better be working hard on making flash better on Mac. I was watching a youtube video and opened my iStat widget. My CPU was working harder on showing the video, than it does rendering a video in Final Cut......

I'm wondering what they spent the last 2.5 years doing?

Flash on Mac sucked then just as badly as it does today. As far as I can tell the only thing that has changed is people are becoming aware of how bad it is.

Can MacRumors please post that video in a format that is accessible?

I mean that Flash movie isn't http://www.section508.gov/ (wow... and I'm from Europe!).

For the sake of completless:

In the Netherlands:
Didn't see the number #1 site using Flash (www.google.nl).
Startpagina.nl (#2) uses flash.... yes... they have ads! No content is in flash.
Marktplaats.nl .... damn... those flash ads again.
msn.nl ... wow... even microsoft uses flash for their ads.... not even silverlight for ads!
detelefoongids.nl... mmm... yes... flash ads.

So... what do we miss when we disable flash? ADS! ADS ONLY! Ow yeah: and some 1KW on energy usage on the energy bill... A fan that is blowing because of heavy CPU and what else?

For the dutch people here: http://www.wetenschapsforum.nl/index.php?showtopic=119791 (Effect of webbrowser plugins on the climate; you can visit it without flash... you'll just miss some ads :p)

This, I agree with, I believe part of the reason for this, or rather mainly the video applications (Premiere and After Effects) is Adobe see Final Cut, and just figure "why bother?" Im not saying Adobe fear Final Cut, they just see Apple is making a product close to Adobes so they figure why put in the effort if most Mac owners will go with Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro Instead.

It's not expensive. Seriously. When I got the production suite, not a week later did I do a BASIC advertisement that was a days work and was paid roughly $500. When you buy an Adobe Suite, and intend to use it for work and not fun, you earn back what it costs.. very very quick. My general rule is, if you think Adobes software is to expensive? Your not meant to own it because you can't see why it is it costs so much.

There also VERY different as one does more so web work and the other does video. The proper comparison is Production Suite against Final Cut Studio. Although the price is the same, you get Photoshop, which is the industry standard in it's respective field. Apple has NOTHING like Photoshop CS4

Lynch's comments about Flash on the Mac indicate that the Adobe is working hard on CPU usage during video rendering, acknowledging that such tasks use more CPU cycles on the Mac than on Windows.

How many years does adobe need to fix this? :D

flash  [flash] Show IPA
–noun
1. a brief, sudden burst of bright light: a flash of lightning.
2. a sudden, brief outburst or display of joy, wit, etc.
3. a very brief moment; instant: I'll be back in a flash.

Time is up!

Dear Kevin:

Steve Jobs totally ate your lunch.

Give it up.

Start doing the smart thing and make tools for HTML5.

The problem is that HTML5 is NOT a replacement for Flash. There are some things that can be accomplished in Flash that cannot be accomplished in HTML5 yet. Plus, there are no good authoring tools that would make it easier to create content that would match Flash.

You have to accept the reality, and that is the transition to HTML5 won't come anytime soon. There's still some issues to be resolved, we still have the issue with the <video> tag.

I'd say we wait for GPU acceleration to finally be implemented, this would solve many problems as well. As for the death of Flash, sure, the less things I have to install the better, but it won't happen overnight,

I would say about 15% of the web sites I visit rely on flash. Perhaps they're counting the annoying adverts - like at the top of this site! Better off without it, especially when HTML 5 will be far better.

"Well, there's a lot of Flash content on the Web, and so, right now about 85% of the top websites have Flash on their website."

Sure, but 85% those Flash's are ads anyways xD

WTF is a "top" website?!? I disable Flash for all but a few websites and wish it would go away on those too. I would say my Internet experience is 95% Flash free.

I think he was talking in code, replace the word "TOP" with the word "PORN" and I would agree with him.

Flash Ain't Gonna Happen

(this is from an article I recently wrote, and I think it is appropriate to this chat thread)

I will say this for the record, and you are welcome to bet against me…but you’re going to lose your money…the iPhone will NEVER support Flash. Neither will the iPad.

In a recent Town Hall meeting, Steve Jobs said that Flash was too buggy, that the world is moving to HTML5, which is one of the reasons why the iPhone will never support Flash. I personally think he is avoiding the bigger statement: Flash on the iPhone or iPad would make Apple lose money.

Apple is making a fortune selling iPhone apps through the iTunes store. Millions and millions of dollars pour in every month as users buy PacMan, Assassin’s Creed, and Angelina Ballerina Dress-Up (that app is my daughter’s, I swear).

Now imagine what would happen if Apple installed a Flash plugin for the iPhone Safari browser. Soon, somebody would create a really cool, Flash-based PacMan browser application.

Users could then go online on their iPhone and play PacMan, for free, through their web browsers. The programmer would get ad revenue without Apple as the middleman.

And there goes millions of dollars of revenue for Apple. Why allow a browser-based application to take over their business?

Thanks,
Erik

Apple sitting idly by on the iPad magazine experience?

The WIRED prototype is pretty impressive. I like some of what they've conceived for the interface and interactivity opportunities of magazine content. Some similarities to Sports Illustrated's prototype.

(Note how all of these prototypes seem to be developed for a 16:9 screen ratio?!?! Seriously, what is Apple thinking with that boxy 4:3 ratio?? What, I ask??)

This is all happening pretty fast at this point. With publishers increasingly partnering with companies like Adobe (and other user interface developers) on tablet interfaces, I feel like Apple is risking missing their chance to dictate and control -- which they like to do -- the way magazines/newspapers/periodicals will be experienced on the iPad. Are they intentionally going to let each publisher create whatever types of interfaces they want? App-style? Some great, some terrible... take your chances, folks?

It seems unlike Apple to not try to control more the way these magazine/newspaper "apps" are developed. Their lack of attention at the iPad's launch to a consistent iPad magazine/newspaper/periodical experience is seeming more like a missed opportunity every day.

I am really agitated with Adobe's stance on this. All the other phone manufacturers are ok with Flash, and I am going to have to side with Apple on this one.

I am tired of Flash, Flashing and Flashes. I might be ok with technologies like Flickr or Flickering, but we need to be honest and vote using our wallets. Until someone is ready with a technology that gives uninterrupted images on the internet, we shouldn't have to settle for any Flashing, Flickering, Dimming or Popping.

No more internet Flashing! Just bring us a steady silver light with quick time on our displays and we'll all be happy.

I think i must've missed the part where he mentions that most of the flash enabled sites are either ads, which who wants to see those on their phone anyway, and others which detect things like mouseover, out, etc and how are you going to detect that with your finger? And how many other flash sites are only using it as a video player or for photo slideshows and could convert those to either quicktime or javascript alternatives?

I mean really, when someone says "iPhone needs flash" are they only saying that so they can keep up on the latest redtube updates? Or because they can't watch their Facbook videos?
