Very interesting.

I think it's the first time I have seen an AE upgrade price at a cheaper price point then PS.....ever.

I was also astonished to see in the demo clips they are using Macs. I was not expecting that.

The cloud gives Adobe to much room to have everyone by the short and curlys for good.

You download the full apps as normal. After that, no constant internet connection is required to use the apps, but I suspect an occasional connection will be needed to check for a valid subscription. This is one of my fears e.g. I’ve got a deadline to meet and Adobe have a server problem and my software suddenly stops working because my subscription can’t be validated.

See http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/creativecloud/faq.html

Then why is Adobe charging a monthly fee? And the fee does not have an end date from what I have been reading.

And they say (from your link),
When you suspend or cancel your membership to Creative Cloud, you will no longer have access to the CS applications, other desktop software, and services that are components of Creative Cloud. However, if you saved your work to your computer, you will continue to have access to those files. You will also have access to the same benefits as a free Creative Cloud member, which include 2GB of storage space (reduced from 20GB), the ability to sync and store your files, access to a free 30-day trial of the desktop software that has not already been installed and provisioned as part of your paid membership, and access to the free level of services included with Creative Cloud.

How can a user have no access to the CS applications but still have access to files created with those apps?

If you would like to renew your one-year membership for another year, you do not need to do anything. Your account is set to auto-renew so that you will not experience any interruption in access to your Creative Cloud products and services.

When does Adobe stop taking money from a user? Ever?

I think they mean if your work is saved to your hard drive, that way you don't lose it. So theoretically you can still get to those files without being connected to the cloud.

It is a little bit vague.

I think Flash as an internet delivery format is likely dead, but the software itself is still great for creating animations and can also be used to create ipad and android apps.

Agreed. It's a great learning too for objective programming, too. It's how I learned and it greatly improved my JavaScript skills. And the Flash IDE is generally quite good, especially for animation.

Adobe is really trying to address the web animation HTML5 crowd with Edge, and that sounds awesome. I've tried an early beta and it shows a lot of promise. What I would be really curious about, is a Flash-like IDE for creating HTML5 apps.

Adobe is in the business of creating the best tools for creative people. At the end of the day, if their IDE's and frameworks are crafted around HTML5 instead of Flash, they still benefit greatly. Some might argue that, because it will no longer require a plugin, it increases their exposure.

I think people would be really impressed with the capabilities of a modern browser with HTML5– it's hardly distinguishable from Flash these days. It's just that there's no good IDE's.

Upgrading after Creative Cloud?

I went thru the Adobe FAQ's and didn't see anything regarding what the upgrade price will be if for example, I use the Creative Cloud for a year and don't like it. Will I be able to purchase a license upgrade based off Creative Cloud CS6 or will it be based off the last version I purchased (CS5)? If there's no upgrade option, then it won't be worth the chance for me.

UPDATE - I just got off the phone with Adobe and they said that you can upgrade from whatever version you are using. So after the first year, if you don't like the Creative Cloud, you could upgrade to a boxed version from CS6.

Over here in Europe, the 6th edition of the famous Adobe suite is outrageously overpriced!
Licenses cost up to 53% more than in the US. Adobe stated in the past that this difference was legitimated by the cost induced by developing various localizations. This argument doesn't quite gull me, as for the french localization of CS6, the french-canadian version sold in Canada costs the exact same as the standard american-english version sold in the US.
This, unfortunately, is nothing new, and dates back to at least CS3, if not earlier.

Didn't CS5 just come out? I'm still using CS3 and wonder if I will be able to upgrade from CS3 to CS6 for $500 something?

CS6 Upgrade Offer

"...Therefore, we’re pleased to announce that we will offer special introductory upgrade pricing on Creative Suite 6 to customers who own CS3 or CS4. This offer will be available from the time CS6 is released until December 31, 2012. More details on this offer, as well as any introductory offers for existing customers to move to Creative Cloud membership, will be announced when CS6 and Creative Cloud are released later this year."

More info:

"Owners of a CS5 or CS5.5 suite edition qualify for upgrade pricing to a CS6 suite edition. Owners of an individual CS5 or CS5.5 product qualify for upgrade pricing to the same product but not to a suite edition. Any version earlier than CS5 will not be eligible for upgrade pricing.

Owners of CS3 or CS4 individual products and suite editions will receive temporary upgrade pricing to CS6 until December 31, 2012. After that date, only owners of CS5 or CS5.5 products will qualify for upgrade pricing to CS6."

Could you help me understand this better?

When you say you can upgrade from whatever version you are using, do you mean the version you owned before the cloud, or what you are currently using in the cloud?

One example. If you own CS5 and signed up for the cloud, then at the end of the year you leave it, do you upgrade based off of your boxed CS5 copy? What if you decide to abandon the cloud 3 years from now, will you be out of luck if they say CS5 can no longer be upgraded?

As a CS3 user, after 2012, I can no longer upgrade. So I'm basically wondering if they offer some sort of deal "out-of-the-cloud" no matter what version you owned prior and or how long you've been in the cloud.

The rep told me that your upgrade would be based off whatever version you are currently using (cloud or no cloud). So you would just need to upgrade to a boxed licensed version before you cancelled your cloud membership.

This is good to know since I'm a current CS3 user doing the $29.99 Cloud option and would love to have an upgrade option before my special year pricing for the cloud ends.

I have Design Premium CS5. Upgrading costs $750, as opposed to CS5.5 upgrades paying just $375.

Does Adobe actually check or make the CS6 license only allow upgrade from CS5.5 for the pricing? Are there different product keys they give?

Trying to see if I can get the CS5.5 upgrade price for my CS5.

So, I noticed that the creative suite 6 minimum requirements include 4 gigs of ram. Does this mean that I won't be able to use them on the go in my 2006/2007 core2duo macbook pro that only supports a max of 3 gigs of ram??

Good Deal For Me ...

Having been a previous owner of CS5 I was able to do the $29.99 per month for the full suite of products.
For me, that was a deal ... $359.88 for the year ... for whatever app I need or want to use and learn ...

I don't have a problem renting this software if my choice is $2500 vs $390
