Yes and no.

Display size still matters a lot.

I can't imagine working on something smaller than my current 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Display…

Makes me wonder about the talk of Apple making the CPUs for Macs in the future. Do they have a scaled-up design in the wings for the desktop? iPads are low power devices, but are getting more capable everyday. What can Apple do in a higher-power scenario?

But the iPad can't be a laptop replacement because it can't run 'Full' software.

It still can't be a laptop replacement because iPad can't run laptop OSes, Like Windows or Mac or Linux. It doesn't have full access of File System, It cannot connect accessories via wires, it just works differently.

Until the day, iPad works similar or able to do all these things that I can do with my computer, it won't be a laptop replacement. Heck, iPad can do less than my similarly priced Compute Stick from Intel.

Adobe will end up like their "in"famous product FLASH!

Adobe will Die, it will be long and painfull....for them.

There's a chance that Adobe will duplicate their PC efforts to iOS, which is to create a tablet version that's "fully functional". The versions don't look exactly the same. There are features that are stripped out and new gestures to learn, but it's usable.

And that means an ARM based Mac is even more likely to happen. One of the main concerns is software, but if Adobe and other key players are able to port their stuff on an iPad most of the work is done for an ARM OS X porting.

Absolutely. This is Apple telling Adobe that marzipan is the future and working with them so that they’ll be one of the people on the stage when the first ARM Mac is released.

And I’d be willing to be a million dollars that MS are doing exactly the same thing with Office.

Be interesting to see how these companies handle the transition for subscribers.

Presumably you’ll have a setting on your account page where you can either get updates to the traditional desktop versions (for as long as they are supported) or move to the new versions.

I’d imagine that new features will start to only appear on the marzipan versions making hold outs gradually move to these new versions.

They call it the ‘adobe u-turn’ where you break yourself intwain with such drastic flip flops.

I’m sorry but Adobe is a has been company with very basic software not worthy of a subscription and easily replaced by others.

The only program made by them still relevant is premiere and that’s only because YouTubers stick with it. I and no one should ever buy or pay for software that requires a connection to run.

This just means we're going to get a web-based feature-stripped Photoshop, which relies completely on Adobe's cloud service to work, just like the "new" Lightroom CC. It's fine if you're doing light edits for web but doesn't really scale well to more demanding workflows. And then they will gradually retire the full desktop Photoshop like they are doing to Lightroom CC Classic.

Edit: This will probably make me pull the plug and switch to fully Adobe-free apps, Affinity Photo, Designer and Clip Studio Paint.

I’ve been trying to switch, but still need a good Lightroom replacement with printer color profile support before I can be truly free of them.

I have the new iPad with the Pencil and an Adobe account, looking forward to trying this out as I do lots of Photography photoshoot edits.

You may well be right, but I really hope you’re wrong. Unless Marzipan becomes device-aware (right now it’s only size aware afaik) then I don’t think it’s the answer for complex apps that cross iOS and macOS. The UI for touch apps and mouse apps is and should be quite different. What I’m hoping to see is, like Microsoft with Office, an ARM port forcing a radical cleanup of the code base. That would really help the native versions on all platforms.

Either way, that sound you hear is the sound of healthy competition. Go, Affinity! :)

Does this mean Adobe finally got around to rewriting the codebase? Miracles do happen. Maybe Illustrator is next.

What? You mean you don’t like the seven different slightly types of settings panels, all with slightly different buttons and controls? Not even the flash based ones!?

I don't trust anything from Adobe anymore.

"Full" Photoshop on iPad sounds like another lie. What's "Full"? It will never be a 1:1 feature set simply because you have completely different operating systems.

Every year they continue to drive all of their products further into the ground.

Is this a sarcastic statement or is this your opinion?

It was steeped in sarcasm lol. This is always the excuse trotted out by people who say that you can't replace your laptop with an iPad but now were starting to get these 'full' desktop class programs on it.

I totally believe that the average user can replace their laptop with an iPad. After I got my iPad, I found my MacBook was going whole weeks without being switched on so I ended up selling it.

I wouldn't have thought that features are OS-dependent. What I got from it is that it will be a 1:1 feature set probably with a UI that is tweaked to suit a stylus interaction method.
