So I have a a series 8 watch, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple TV4k and an older Mac all tied to my Apple ID. When I tried to activate the advanced data protection it said I had to wait until February 2023 I guess because my watch is new.

Anyway my MacBook Pro is grandfathered to macOS 12 and does not support the latest OS. Can I still activate the protection? What will happen to the MacBook when it’s removed?

Yeah. With Advanced data protection Apple wants to make sure you're not buying your iPhone and then selling it a week later.

As far as the MacBook is concerned, there should be no issues. This only affects secure iCloud backups. if turned off, iCloud backups revert back to its original state.

Yep the scheme about waiting makes sense to me now. Always someone looking to do harm.

So if I remove the MacBook from the data protection when I enable it (in Feb) the end to end encryption for all the features will work on all the supported devices and not affect the MacBook Pro.

Once the feature is enabled, new devices will automatically offer the advance data protection as it is an iCloud feature and not a device one. I doubt that selling the iPhone after a week is a concern for Apple, because you could do this with any new device you add over time

Can somebody explain to me why I can't enable ADP on my iPhone 14 when I added this device months ago?
Is there another device on your Apple ID that’s new? That’s what is happening to me with my series 8 watch

Did you try to enable from your iPhone? It's only the enable that's blocked from new devices. If you enable from an older device then the new device also uses ADP.

Edit: Word

Is anyone else getting this error when trying to enable? No explanation at all. Option to enable is not greyed out. ALL devices on account have been updated to needed software version.

I have 2 iPads (both running 16.2) and an iPhone 13 Pro Max (16.2). My newest device is my iPhone which is over a year old and I can’t activate until February…

Edit to add: all 3 devices say Feb 7.

I updated all of my devices to the latest OSes today and just now was successful in enabling the advanced data protection feature. None of my devices are new or recently added to my account.

It would not allow me to enable ADP until I signed out of my Mac which cannot update to Ventura
That’s my question. You can remove it from the ADP screen when asked or like you did log out. But what happens when your unsupported Mac needs to use or update that data like Notes. I don’t want to enable this unless I know it won’t affect non supported devices.

Turning on advanced data protection worked for me. Phone, watch, and ipad have been on account for a year. Before turning feature on I reactivated and updated an old appletv I had wiped and put in storage. Wanted to see if previously active devices counted as new activation.

I used recovery key instead of recovery account. I made a new key then waited 15 minutes. Then turned on advanced data protection and it worked.

Still can't get it to turn on here.

What's weird is when you go to setup it says the recovery key is off but when you click manage it says it's on

I just got the iOS 16.2 notification to update. But I am not to sure if my region supports it since its only supported for US regions called the Advanced Protection for iCloud sync.

If it does, I have a question for this.

Since the encryption keys are stored on the device, and someone looses their phone or the phone gets damaged, then even when trying to access the iCloud data through iCloud.com using the web browser, the data cannot be accessed because the encryption keys are stored on the device since all data that is synced from the device are first encrypted before syncing to iCloud.

What happens then?

As I understand the process you would use your securely stored Recovery Key to get you back into your iCloud account on a new device.

I am more miffed with not allowing my iPhone X and iPhone 6S from being included. I use them as TV Remotes and audio base stations for music.
I can't upgrade, especially since my 2016 MBP can't go to Ventura and I use it as a cheaper Home NAS and need my AppleID on it due to all my DVDs and Blu-Rays being digitally stored in iCloud.

I have to take a hard pass on it.

Could creating a separate iCloud account and adding the account to family sharing for those older devices be a workaround?

However, even if the data is end to end encrypted, I still keep only my sensitive data on an encrypted USB device. All else can be synced. Just want to play it safe even if Apple claims that they do not have the access to the encryption keys. I just don’t trust anyone anymore.
