I haven’t yet been able to turn it on. All of my HomePods are updated to 16.2 but a couple still show 16.1 under iCloud settings, so it won’t let me turn the feature on. I've seen it take awhile for certain devices to “phone home” and report their new OS. Does anyone know how to trigger this other than waiting. Trying to get in on that Protection train.

Remove the HomePods from your account. If you have a Mac, connect the HomePod to the Mac and have it do an update / restore. That way, you will be positive it is on 16.2. Several here (including me) have had false iOS version status reading from the Home app.

Isn't there a change in subscription pricing once going to Family?

And then, they'd be under the Advanced Data Protection umbrella either way, right?
I may be wrong here but, it has been my understanding that Cloud sharing does not including device backup and messages etc. which stay in the respective person's iCloud. If that is correct, documents and photos might be protected but, the former wouldn't.

Removing them from my iCloud account prompted me to re-enter the password in the Home app to sign back in. After doing this, they are all now showing on 16.2. 👌

I still can't enable Enhanced Data Protection for whatever reason. It doesn't seem like this feature is available in Norway yet.

Still have to wait till 2/23/23 - and why doesn’t it say which device it’s waiting on. Very confusing.

Is anyone else getting this error when trying to enable? No explanation at all. Option to enable is not greyed out. ALL devices on account have been updated to needed software version.

Seeing the same on iPhone and iPad when I try to turn it on. On Mac, it doesn't even show an error, just takes me back to the "you're responsible for your recovery" page.

I was not able to enable Advanced Data Protection until I added a recovery contact AND also generated a recovery key. I even deleted and re-added the recovery contact. Does it require more than one recovery contact? There's no information on this out there.

It shouldn’t require both, but your post answers my question as to whether you can enable both at once.

It should only require one of the two options. I have mine set up with my recovery key.

I attached screenshots of the difference for me. It was only after generating a recovery code in addition to setting recovery contacts that "Set Up Account Recovery" changed to "Review Recovery Methods." And yes, I did update all my devices before trying to turn ADP on. I also tried turning it on my Mac but it didn't work, either.

So when it tells you you have to remove devices from your iCloud device list to be able to enable ADP what exactly happens to the devices removed? What functionality is lost from these removed devices?

If the devices can't be upgraded to iOS 16.2, said devices are not eligible for the highest level of iCloud protection. As such, said device backups in the cloud can be read by Apple and LEO.

If said devices can be upgraded to iOS 16.2, temporarily removing them from your account does no harm and said devices can be added back to your account in part or in whole as you upgrade the one or the whole.

I removed my homepod minis and one of my Apple Tv's from my account, turned on Advanced Protection, and then added back the previously removed devices thus providing the new high level of protection.

I have an iPad Air2 on 14.8.1 and a 27 iMac that can't be upgraded past High Sierra. Just wondered what I'll lose when I remove them from the list.. Are they unable to use iCloud anymore or just won't have ADP. I guess whatim asking is will I be able to sign back in to iCloud with them after ADP is set up

So I'll be able to sign back into iCloud on those devices and data from those devices won't be protected as well as the ones able to use ADP
My understanding, and someone will have to test this out, is that ADP will not be enabled if you keep the incompatible devices connected to iCloud, other than for those functions - emails, messages, etc. that need to be able to connect outside of iCloud and Apple. Everything else will just be local to those devices, no iCloud syncing to your other devices. That’s how I read the description but again this will have to play out over time to see exactly how it functions. For now I’m keeping it off because I have an older MacBook Pro that can only go up to Big Sur. Plus I don’t see any real need for this feature to be enabled, at least not for myself or my wife.

In another thread someone said your older devices will not be able to sync iCloud data with ADP on because of the local key stored in the device to encrypt/decrypt the data. Only contacts, calendar and emails will sync to the older devices.

I too will wait since it’s disabled til February.

I’m seeing conflicting info out there about the recovery key and am wondering if anyone knows for sure.

I’ve read that if you enable a recovery key than that key is always needed to reset your iCloud password, even if you have your trusted device or a recovery contact setup. Basically it says if you lose the recovery key your hosed.

Other places I’ve read that the recovery key is not needed if you still have access to a trusted device or recovery contact.

Does anyone know which it is?

That’s how I read it as well. The other features will work but will be strictly local, no iCloud syncing or backing up. I still see this as more trouble than it’s worth but I am glad to see it available for those who have a specific need for it.

After reading all of this, I have decided to hold off on ADP, as I have multiple Apple devices that I require in my daily usage that cannot upgrade to Ventura or 16.2

It's unfortunate, but this is a huge roadblock for many people.
