I'm not comparing the Stax to anything. It's just the benchmark in what you can get sound wise. No bloat, unlimited stage, what you hear is what it should sound like.

The 32 ohm version of the 770 don't need amplification, it's loud enough on an iPhone. But sure they are big. If size or audio quality is not your priority, then you'll be fine with anything you'll like.

At the end you do listen with your ears, not eyes.

you do listen through your ears but i'm saying different headphones have different purposes.
it wouldn't be appropriate for example, to use an HD800 on a plane.

even though it is technically superior in every way to the Beats.

edit: didnt realize the dt770 came in 32ohm variants. thought it was only 250 and 80.
cool good to know, will look out for it.

CNET seems to think that these are the best headphones for the year of 2014. Can anybody say how these are and how they sound?
http://www.cnet.com/topics/headphones/best-headphones/

they sound great OP. I think you'd like them. nevermind these 'audiophile' snobs.
at the end of the day people have preference, and it's okay to not buy the most neutral sounding headphones out there.
especially if youre looking for bluetooth noise cancelling ones.

Update:

I decided to try out the beats studio, and got them in red, and they look amazing and I love the red color. However, it's not quite the sound quality I was looking for. I am thinking about returning the headphones. The $29 Apple EarPods seem to sound better than the beats.

What is a good headphone for at most less than $300 and is a good brand, and will make me hear things in my music that I never heard of before? I don't care about it being wired or wireless. It can be both. Thanks!

Cue the snobs, lol. OP, check out Headfi.org. Tons of brands are tested and reviewed and discussed in depth the way we talk about Apple on these forums. All prices are covered and some brands/ specific models present killer bang for the buck at low price points.

Beats are horrible :) What type of headphones you want:
Over-the-Ear
On-the-Ear
In-the-ear

Knowing that makes it easier than having people recommend a style you wouldn't wear.

Lol beats aren't horrible ..the beats solo 2 which I did get for free sound quite good ....way better then the horrible solo hd and old studios . Even tyll even praised them

My favorite pair so far is the v-moda m-100 which is around $300 but can be found cheaper at times on Amazon

There's also the v-moda XS for around $200

I have the V-Moda Vibrato in ear and I love them. I have the the B&W C5 in ear and they're pretty good too. My over ear purchases haven't worked out quite as well. I have the V-Moda Crossfades, the Klipsch Image and the Harmon Kardon CLs. Fortunately I got them all at Amazon deal of the day pricing. Their are things I like about them I like but I just can't seem to get the satisfaction I am craving. I finally decided to spring for the Audio Technica ATH MX 50x yesterday. I am hoping they will be the ones.

just to summarize the consensus here and around other headphone sites:

best value closed (can't hear outside): ATH-M50x (~$200), Shure SRH 940 (~$300). If I were you I'd go here. So Shure 940 or the ATH.

Best value open headphones (can hear outside, sound leaks to outside, but better sound quality): AKG Q701 (~$300) Grado Sr225e (~$200)

What I want is a headphone that at least comes close to "recording studio" sound quality. I am interested in the beats because they come in the red color, and it would be nice to have a headphone that is not white. Any advice?
If you want recording studio quality, then why are you refering to Beats?
Id say Sennheiser or B&W.
But stay the **** away from Beats!

Which crossfades lol ? The LP I guess ? They suck if your not a DJ and even then not that great but for around $100 they are ok . The m-100 are great .

The audio technica m50 are ok for the price but nothing fantastic

You're right on the Audio Technicas. So over rated. Called Amazon to return.

Here I go again. I just handed the AT m50x to the UPS guy and immediately ordered the V-Moda M100. I'm a V-Moda fan so I think I might have got it right this time. Here's hoping.

man.. for that kind of money.. why dont you go all out and go with the Q701 or the Focal Spirit Classic or Pro?

Cause some people cannot wear IEMs and refuse to pay $1000 for custom fit ones. Plus the drivers on full size headphones are larger, able to hit lower frequencies.

I have to disagree. The Shure SE846 is superior to almost any full sized headphone in terms of bass. The reason I say almost is because I haven't compared it to $2000 LCD headphones yet or the TH900.

The way it delivers subwoofer bass without bleeding into the mids, while delivering amazing mids at the same time is very unique.

The Focals are $400 compared to the VModa $254. The 701 is on sale for $231 on Amazon which is a great deal but they're not really for use with iPads or iPhones. I'm familiar enough with VModa to be comfortable buying them.

Eh those are OK but I like the v moda m-100

I respectfully disagree. They're not over rated. You won't find many better performing headphones for the same price that are also going to be as comfortable to wear. V-Moda (now) makes great sounding headphones, can't argue with that. But you're paying more for colored audio.

Thanks, can you provide links for the headphones you are talking about? I already returned the beats so I will be able to buy the better headphones soon.

I just finished a 1 week trial of the Bose SoundLink on-ear wireless and Beats Solo 2 wireless.

- Comfort: Bose are a bit lighter and allow more listening time without having to take a quick break or re-adjust. Beats have a tighter clamping force and require a rest after an hour or so, and they did get slightly hot on the ear after extended wear. WINNER=Bose

- Sound: If you like bass (gee, who doesn't??) the Beats pronounce the lows and mid-lows more than the Bose. This causes a some mids and upper-mids to be somewhat recessed on the soundstage; not much but noticeable. The Bose produces good lows with enough impact but not to cloud the mids out. For a better balanced sound go with the Bose. I found that over the course of listening I had ear fatigue with the constant enhanced bass from the Beats. WINNER=Bose (Note - wired operation on the Beats is far superior to the Bose)

- Features: Bose can connect to 2 devices at the same time and has up to 8 devices that can remain in memory. They also work with Siri where the Beats do not (at least not wirelessly - that do have a mic and control on the included cord). For this reason WINNER=Bose

- Looks: Hands down winner is the Beats.

Just for the record my final choices were.
In ear: V-Moda Vibrato/B&W C5 S2
On ear: V-ModaXS/B&W P5 S2
Over ear: V-Moda M100/B&W P7

Am I a V-Moda/B&W fanboy? Guilty as charged.
