It's not "bad" because there's some faulty models out there, because there's always going to be differences in screen and not all will be pristine. As for the rest of the complaints, I think the vibration is a consequence, again, of the profile of the device being so thin and the speakers finally being loud enough to hear from.

It's highly worth it if you want a full-sized iPad, never buy into year old tech if you're in the market for it.

I find the LTE models the Vibrations is slightly less at the same volume as the Wifi Models.

We should just consolidate the all the issues into one "AppleGate" since every apple product seems to suck. :)

That's ok. That's just a MacRumors Universe phenomenon. In the real world, people love Apple products and buy them by the millions, and are very satisfied with them. It's only here that all these "gates" seem to take form.

There has been the odd issue that has transcended MacRumors, but those are rare. For the most part the world ignores this insanity.

People here expect the best from Apple to the point of extremes.

Every little problem is disappointment. Although there is some problems that are serious and need to be addressed.

I got an Air 2 on Friday. My only problem is I'm not sure on the size after using a mini for two years. The screen is the best I've seen on an iOS device, the build is perfect and solid and it's the fastest iOS device yet. Unless you prefer the mini sized iPad it's easily the best so far.

IMO- These are people just looking for something to complain about.
I understand little things bug some people. Cool.
Take it back and move on.

I have had the iPad Air2 since day one.

does it vibrate? yup- a bit. Enough to cause me pain? nope- not a bit.
Consider this- those complaining about vibration are listening to music, etc through the iPad speakers vs headphones or external speakers.
iPad speakers will never beat the sound quality of headphones- so why bother?
And if you must- fold up the cover and prop the device on a flat surface.

Screen spots? sure i see some very tiny shadows- BUT:
only if I squeeze the back of the case far tighter than i ever would under normal conditions.
Or if I shake it like a monkey.
Shall we toss an Air2 off the Empire State building-
watch it crash and smash and then blame it on a design flaw...?
Under normal use- I have NEVER seen these shadow spots.

Battery?
I have had it since day one. (3 days) plenty of use.
I have yet to charge it. right around 45%.

It's super light (compared to ipad3)
New chip. Super fast (compared to any and all)
2G RAM (which everyone cried and screamed it needed)
Fingerprint (I couldn't care less about this- but it's nice)

To answer your question.
No. It's not that bad.
It's pretty darn great.

good luck

I'm using mime and I love it. I came from an iPad Air and it really is much better and lighter. The gold is beautiful. :)

The screen can distort in a specific spot if you press the back in a specific spot. This might bother you if you A.) hold the iPad in a very specific way, or B.) if you go looking for it.

The speakers are loud and do reverberate.

Fingerprints show up a little more noticeably.

The battery needs slightly more frequent charging than the previous model.

You might get a screen with some color shifting and/or a shadow down the left edge. You might also get a beautifully even screen.

These things might bother you. Only you can decide if they do, and only after buying one to see.

But what will definitely NOT bother you is that this is absolutely the best iPad Apple has met yet. It is hands down one of, if not the, fastest and smoothest tablets ever made. The screen is crisp and punchy. The UI is quick and responsive, as is the wifi (except for a couple of iOS 8 glitches). The hardware is light, and thin, and a pure pleasure to use.

The iPad Air 2 is what tablet computing is meant to be. No iPad before it has been this close to idealized.

1: I don't mind it as much and my 2nd unit doesn't do it as much but it may vary by unit ? My wifi model did it but exchanged for a cellular model and I notice it does it less

2: what distortion?

3: once again what ? Typical Apple product and luck of the draw. It's been like that for a while

4: they all are smudgy since the beginning

5: battery life has been the same for me as the air

Just buy one yourselves and experience it yourself . Of you don't like it you can always return it

Yes, it's an awful, horrendous, poorly engineered, big bag of hurt, block of Chinese junk.

Seriously, don't get taken in so easily by the persistent online naysayers - the human analogue to a DOS attack. As long as I've been scanning MR these types have been around with their hyper negative comments, none of which ever matches reality. Go back to the archives for the original iPod, any iPhone, any iPad. Terrible things are said, yet, they all kept growing in popularity (the iPod was essential obsoleted by the iPhone) because none of the "issues" were a big deal to normal, happy, productive people.

The Air 2 is a great bump from the Air. I'm typing this on one now. It's not perfect - few things in life are. But the negative comments noted at the top of this thread are grossly exaggerated unless one is hypersensitive and a perfectionist par excellence. Do not let them alone dissuade you. Try for yourself & enjoy.

Hey everyone, thank you for all the replies.

I just got a new iPad Air 2 and man..what a difference.

I may have slight book spine, I have color blindness, but feel like a see some shadow along the left edge, but my friend who has 20/20 vision says she can't see anything so it must just be me. :(

It does vibrate more, but it's nit at big if a deal. Overall, I'm very pleased! That you all for easing my nerves!

In fairness, Apple stuff is priced at a premium so people expect more. That's reasonable to me. There do seem to be some QC issues and its not only on this forum either. A Google search will show that lots of forums and tech sites are discussing the same things. Just saying.

Can I get some advice from people who have been on this forum longer than me?

I was strongly considering getting the iPad Air 2, it seemed like a great device. However, there are so many threads and posts about issues:

Excessive vibrations
Screen distortion from holding on the right side
Bad screen quality (backlighting, hue, etc)
Excessively smudgy screen
Bad battery life
And on and on....

I don't want to dismiss anyone's claims: I'm sure many are perfectly valid, but in a week's time this forum has ripped this iPad to shreds and made me afraid to get one. What do you think? I realize this forum is made up of people who usually more technical knowledge than the average user so maybe their standards are unrealistic? My iPad 3 physical build was amazing. Aside from the weight, it felt durable and sturdily. I am now afraid of the Air 2. Do these kinds of complaints always happen, or does the Air 2 genuine have design issues?

:(

Yep, mine is so bad I both a second unit for the house.

It is the best iPad I have ever owned and love the cellular option

Mine is also really bad ... bad bad bad ...

... no, it's fine. People come here to complain, not to praise.

... spoiled ...

Hi Traverse,
The best advice I can give you is to go to an Apple store or to your nearest Apple product retailer and have a play with the Air 2. That's what I've been doing.
Test it out for yourself. Test all the anomalies you've mentioned above. Battery life may be impossible to test if you can't unplug it from the charger.
Give yourself plenty of time to play with it, such as say 30 minutes or more.
Test video, audio, games, Safari browsing.
Hold it in your hand and see if the screen distortion bothers you.
Play around with brightness settings.
Play with audio EQ settings.
Try out the new screen rotation lock.
Then when you've done all that. Give it a day or so and go back to the store and have another play.
Take your current iPad with you and compare the two. Do a side by side performance test.

I'd say that if there are a lot of positive comments on the iPad 2 then those owners have found a happy medium. In other words you just kinda eventually figure out how to get the best out of your device.
The audio vibration thing bothers me too but when I think about how I use my 2nd gen iPad, I rarely use that for audio anyway. And if I do, such as when watching videos, I usually use headphones. So the vibration issue really won't be an issue for me in that regard.

So play play play and then when your confident enough, buy buy buy! :)
But, if you're still not sure then hold off for a while. You may find one at a bargain price at some point which will sweeten the deal. Wait until Black Friday if you can, November 28, 2014. Only a month away. ;)

Congrats and enjoy. The GODZILLA of IPads!

I've had mine for 24 hours now. There are some things, compared to my iPad2, that are different, not bad, different, and some things were great improvements right away. I'm getting used to the differences, and I love my new iPad Air 2.

I use mine for a good part of my day in the car. For me, the anti-glare screen is terrific.

Try it out. You have to decide for yourself if it's good for you.

Did the screen have a dark blue color when off? Also, was your screen cooler in terms of temperature.

Hey guys, thanks again for all your feedback.

After using the iPad Air 2 for two days I have actually returned it and gone back to my iPad 3.

It was a series of things. The device was significantly faster in terms of UI, Safari, and some game loads, but most of my apps didn't experience a huge difference. An app that took 5 seconds to load on the 3 took 4 seconds on the Air 2. The vibration was annoying and the screen was cooler than I'm used to. There was also some book spine and I didn't feel like trying multiple returns.

None of those were that bad and i did like the device, but I was honestly underwhelmed. My general reaction was "meh, it's nice" and when I'm paying just under $1,000 for something I want a better reaction. Ultimately, when I picked up the Air 2, it felt like a faster iPad 3, not a new device. Does that make sense? It's a great device, just not worth it for me. Maybe next year.

Also, I do like the reduced weight, but the Air 2 felt kind of cheap to me.

Its a great device if you don't use the speakers while holding it, but since I do mine went back to the store and it's back to my iPad 3.

TRUTH

Yep

The iPad Air 2 is the best iPad Apple has ever produced.

Period.

It's truly magical.

The 'best iPad ever' post has a few votes so it's reasonable to assume that people agree. On the other hand, https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20045466#post20045466 shows some light-hearted scepticism (not a bad thing) so I assume that 'truly magical' was sarcasm (not necessarily a bad thing, although it's often hard to gauge emotion online … this can make contributors a little uneasy … try to never take it personally).

That's a nice, honest roundup – thanks.

Whilst I don't have an iPad, it does make sense to want better, especially if a product is financially costly.

Generally (not specific to IT) I prefer secondhand. Because when I personally pay a premium – not necessarily a financial premium – for something new, I have extremely high expectations and too often, new products have failed in a way that I can only describe as careless. In these situations I'm not just underwhelmed, I'm so disappointed that I'll not even bother to return the goods. (Here, I have some empathy with Sir Jonathan Ive's comments about carelessness; off-topic from Apple, I find that type of careless design in some Seagate hardware.) I balance things by purchasing things such as disk drives locally, over the counter, whenever possible. The cost is higher but I know that I'll be able to walk in and exchange goods or get a refund. Something about online shopping doesn't inspire me to bother when things go wrong. Um, I'm rambling.

Apple is one of the few companies that has a long history of meeting my expectations when I spend other people's money on its hardware and software :) … for me to spend my own money, it may seem that Apple must work twice as hard! I probably sound like one helluva difficult customer but when I'm pleased, as I often am in reality, I'm positively glowing.

----

Side note: if ever you see the 'roll eyes' smilie, don't assume that it's a sign of sarcasm. The icon is marked up as such in the editor, but the hint appears only if the user curses over it before clicking. To me it just looks like a smile of sorts, I don't see the eyes rolling, so it's possible that some people use it without realising what it means.

I went from the iPad2 to the iPad Air2 and extremely happy.

The only dislike I have is with the Apple cover and cases. They seem cheap and flimsy and the tri-fold stand calapses when using it on my lap. It's just fine when using it on a flat surface though. I wanted leather but it's not offered in the Smart Cover.

My advice is to completely avoid this forum when it's about buy advice.
I've never seen such picky people like some users here....

I'd suggest to try one personally. If you like it, and you'll like it, then buy one.

+1

… I've never seen such picky people like some users here …

That's probably not complimentary towards my pickiness  but I agree with that point, and what followed ("try one personally") so there's an up-vote from me :)

I was reticent to purchase one myself, but ended up pulling the trigger.

I gotta say I love this thing. The screen doesn't distort unless i literally start pushing hard on the back of the case (at least on mine, it does not distort just by one-handed holding).

It blisteringly fast, I love the AR coating on the screen. The weight and increased thinness do make it a little more comfortable to use than the Air (we have two Airs in the family, so I can compare directly).

Overall I have been very pleased.

Having used a mini the last 12 months and recently getting the 6+ I can say I, happy with the air 2. It compliments each other perfectly. Haven't ran into any of the problems mentioned but I do have my air2 in a case. The sound is something I'm okay with because the speakers for once are actually loud. The battery life is slightly less since I have seen the air 1 last for much longer but considering everything else such as better screen faster processor thinner design I can understand and be okay with the slight loss in battery life.
