OP, out of curiosity, what's the "buyer's" (sorry, gotta use that term in quotes in this case) feedback rating on eBay?

Buyer's rating is 100%. So, I initially assumed the chance that he was trying to scam me was low.

Others in the thread have said buyer feedback is no longer relevant since negative (or even neutral) feedback on buyers is isn't allowed.

Last update, it looks like. As several of you predicted...

"I paid to have the phone repaired so I will keep it. Thank you"

So looks like he blinked first. I was perfectly willing to have him ship it back, assess the damage, and then try to sell it again.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and tips. Definitely a enlightening and frustrating experience.

Now hopefully he will close the case and not leave me negative feedback.

Should I bother to report "abuse of returns" or just consider myself lucky and let it go. He'll probably try to pull this again on someone else.

Wow, congrats. Just stumbled upon this thread. It was intense reading it all. I thought it would go bad for you. Now I am at the end of reading it, glad all things went well, cheers! Also, I will never EVER use eBay after reading through all of this, never have and never will!

Congrats bud.
Glad it worked out for you in the end.
I know the experience and back and forth was very frustrating though.

Wow what a scammer. Report. Please.

Even if you won't stop scams such as these all by yourself, just add your drop and report him.

Thanks again to all. Will submit a recap of what happened to see if I can save a future seller some hassle.
