Ah yes, the Deadbeat Corps is out in force after this latest news about Messages.

Well, the GOOD news is that Apple is indeed still serious about the Mac and that system upgrades/updates will be more frequent.

Greedy Apple? No, it's YOUR OWN greed that makes you cringe yet again over the prospect of having to actually pay for something you want.

Just uninstalled the beta from my Mac. Didn't like it to begin with, but no point keeping it as it'll expire.

If ML is going to cost money (which it seems that it will) I certainly will be sticking to Lion. There's not a single feature that I like of ML.

Wish they put out a real OS update. Nothing big since 10.5 IMO.

10.5 - revolutionary
10.6 - fix 10.5 issues
10.7 - OK, but no "wow" factor. Launchpad as another way to access apps? Well .. okay.
10.8 - 10 new changes to Lion (so far?) Not going to pay $30 for that.

I wonder how much M.L. would cost. What do you guys think?

Somehow I feel it'd be even less than $29. But I have no real arguments for it.

Has anyone told you guys you're a bunch of whiners? Seriously, for the hundreds of dollars extra you're willing to pay for the "Mac Experience" verses a Wintel machine, suddenly paying $30 is too much for an OS update?

I remember when people paid $30 or more to register shareware apps, and that was 10-15 years ago, when a dollar was worth a little bit more than it is now.

If $30 is too much for a one-time purchase, you can always go pay $12 a year for Trillian Pro. :D

How can you say it's underwhelming? They just announced the first developer beta. Nobody knows what else will be included in the final release.

It’s not just a developer preview, but also a first impression of what is expected to become Mountain Lion this Summer. When Lion was first introduced to us and subsequently presented at the final keynote, there were no substantial changes to the OS anymore. The main features had already been announced. I agree that many small features were only later discovered, but these are not really groundbreaking.

And I must also say that I was far more excited for Lion from the start, because there were actually some features I could really find useful. This is not the case for Mountain Lion yet, I am not really excited.

People are willing to pay $2k for a computer but not $25 for a software upgrade? jees! quit complaining!

It wasn't that many years ago that an OS X upgrade cost over $100. Now you get it for a fraction of that and you can text people for free, something you used to happily pay your phone carrier for every month. But I suppose people have short memories.

This Is The side about Apple that i don't like at all. They are artificially limiting The User and know that this Is how they can Pressure him to Upgrade.

What does 'artificially limiting' even mean? What's natural about a commercial business giving you something that you didn't have to pay for?

it's incredible that such behaviour would lead to People hating Microsoft if they die that, but Apple Fans so Not speak up against it and 'swallow' this unfaithful Trick against Apples own customers.

How much does a full version of Windows 7 cost again?

I've often thought I ought to make a list of all the little things Apple does to force you to upgrade, so whenever someone gives me that "no one's forcing you to upgrade" BS I could just c&p the list.

I've decided, this is the first item on the list.

Seriously dude, look up the meaning of the word 'forcing' sometime. Here, I'll do it for you:

verb [ trans. ]
2 (often be forced) make (someone) do something against their will : she was forced into early retirement | [ trans. ] the universities were forced to cut staff.

What Apple is giving you is a choice—spend the money and get the ML features (of which Messages is one), or don't spend the money and don't get them. You might not like the choice, but that's still what it is.

First of all, calm down. "Your obviously in a..." is spelled "you're" or "you are", a bit emberessing being from the UK and not being able to spell your own language right. Anyway, I am not in the position to buy new Apple hardware every year, heck I even waited 3 years to buy the Mac Mini this year, don't judge people you don't know, kiddo. Second, why should Apple give away a free OS UPGRADE? It's not a freaking update. And what is the problem with an upgrade every year? Why wait 2 years for a new OS instead of having a fresh OS with improvments EVERY YEAR? I can't understand how narrow your thinking is. OS X has come to a point, where you can't expect 100 new simply freaking amazing features to pop up, it is a great product already, deal with it.

By the way, if you would read what I actually wrote, I said maybe Messages can not be integraded WITHOUT PROBLEMS into lion. It's a freaking beta, not final and a lot of people have problems with it. If you do not, praise the lord.

"can not be integraded WITHOUT PROBLEMS into lion." - That should read integrated.

"not final and a lot of people have problems with it." - Really?? Show me how many.

"praise the lord. - That should be Lord.

Don't associate a little typo error with a lack of spelling ability. Don't make judgements about people you don't know big boy and less of the kiddo, who do you think you are - My Dad????

IMO this isnt an updated OS that requires a rebranded name such as ML. These are features that (especially messages) should have came part and parcel of Lion. Looks the same plays the same. A minor update to an already existing new OS. As I mentioned before people who buys Macs in the next few months aren't gonna be happy with having to upgrade and fork out yet more money.

The best way would be to offer this update free to existing Lion owners and charge on the App Store for SL users to upgrade for example. :D

but c'mon who isnt going to upgrade? ;) (if you dont have an integrated video a few years old...)

I will not upgrade. Intel Fortran is crucial to my work, and they are slow indeed to upgrade to Mac changes. Not a problem, I don't really need the bells and whistles. Mind you, what Apple is doing long term is necessary and hugely beneficial!

10.6 best version yet - 10.7 is messy, so the 10.8 seems to be imho :/ im sticking with 10.6 even 10.8 gets out, just hope there will be some way of getting Retina MBP working with 10.6 that's all I wish for now, but it's unreal.

In more shocking news today it's rumored that Adobe Lightroom 4 will also be a paid upgrade once moved from public beta to final release. Microsoft, which will release its new version 8 OS as a public beta later this month, also will not be free upon final release. Leeches and self-entitled people everywhere are shocked at the corporate greed.

Well, I could say the same about my errors, but whatever..

Dude, it's not an update, get it in your head. It is an UPGRADE. Why would Apple give it away for free? Do you work for free? I guess not.

Clever?

More like the time tested bait & switch.

Apple's not stupid, they know this is a great way to force sales on those who get hooked on their proprietary messaging.

Very clever indeed...

Bait and switch? Don't use a phrase if you don't understand what it means. Bait and switch is when a company advertises Product A at a great price but when you go to the store it's suddenly "unavailable." But now that they have you in the store and you are in a mindset to buy they use hard or soft sell to get you to buy similar Product B which is X more expensive.

What Apple is doing is offering the general public a sneak peak at an upcoming product. It's no different than a movie company issuing a long version trailer of an upcoming movie.

The ridiculous thing about all the complaining is that when Apple use to not release any public betas the cry was "even Microsoft issues public betas." Now that Apple has released its first in a long time the cry is "this is just a scam."

Then don't? The notifications and messages alone is enough for warrant me spending less than a tank of gas...

I thought you'd roast Skoopman for his more "emberessing" spelling issues, what with being from the UK and all, you'd think he'd get that straight. :)

This is why I Hackintosh. Before Apple said, "You can only run OSX on a Mac." now they are saying, "You can only run it on 'THESE' Macs."

I am running Lion on a Core 2 Quad desktop system and an old Nvidia GT9500. I'll bet the OSX86 guys will get it going on my current specs... But worse case, I gotta spend $100 on a new graphics card... Not $1200 on a new Mac!

Maybe I missed it, but have they announced a price yet? I have a feeling they are going to go to the iOS model (and the pre System 6 model of the early days) where the OS will be free.

I'm still pretty mad though they haven't brought some features to older OSes. Their really isn't' a good technical reason for why they don't do iCloud on SL. I have an original MB that runs great, I just would like to keep my address book and bookmarks in sync with my other Macs, iPhone and iPads and can no longer do that.

Sucks. I can understand that this is to 'force' people to upgrade, but on the other hand people will be upgrading in hordes anyway, so this just sucks.

Whats up with everyone? Apple is a business not a charity. Go elsewhere if you dont like it, they seem pretty fair to me. Do u expect everything the put alot of r&d into to be free?? Go try and upgrade windows and tell me apple isnt fair. Look what happened when they upgraded the iphone 3g to 4.x.x it turned to ****. After a few years expect them not to upgrade your inferior machine to the latest and greatest as it wasnt design for it. My .02c over.

This is the worst marketing idea ever. I'm going Hackintosh after this (if indeed they do remove messages from those of us who can now try it but not use it later).
