WTF Do they not understand that not putting it on as many computers as possible has the effect of crippling it on the new ones?

In a world of communications options, implementations that limit the number of people you can communicate with are the weaker options.

Figure it out, Apple.

Bait and switch? Don't use a phrase if you don't understand what it means. Bait and switch is when a company advertises Product A at a great price but when you go to the store it's suddenly "unavailable." But now that they have you in the store and you are in a mindset to buy they use hard or soft sell to get you to buy similar Product B which is X more expensive."

Like AT&T announcing Unlimited Data plans with much fanfare, in order to get us on AT&T specific devices, then limiting the unlimited plans, and discontinuing them in favor of more expensive ones.

Unfortunate, but not unexpected. Google Voice it is!

Is there an app for GoogleVoice though? That's the one nice thing about Messages, is that it integrates with my GTalk chat accounts as well as my Jabber accounts in one place.

Yea I used to do that with classmates when I was in college, when we were supposed to study for exams.

I think it's up to 10 buddies per group video chat? I could be wrong though.

Darn, I didn't know that... well, back then I only had a few Mac buddies and I used to see enough of them during the day to really want to see then inside iChat again. :D

So, what's going to happen when the beta expires?

I don't know what you expected, your Macbook is 5 freaking years old, of course it can't get every shiny new OS, jeez. You can still use Snow Leopard or Lion on it, so what is the problem? I nevery understand why people are so obsessed with getting the newest software, but don't want to pay for it or upgrade their hardware. Maybe Apple knows, that Messages can't be integrated without problems in Lion, that's why it will be ML exclusive.

I totally asgree. I would guess that Mountain Lion's primary purpose is to enable the transition from iOS and OS-X into a single operating system. Pulling out old technology at this time would be a smart move.

You purchased your current products because of the value, features, and benefits it had at the time of purchase. If you want more than that, either hold off your purchase until it has what you want, or make an additonal purchase when it becomes available.

Gee, Toyota just came out with a new Prius that can be pluged in. I should get ticked-off that I can't upgrade my old Prius? I don't think so.

That's misleading, Apple! You have to tell someone up-front if they download a beta version of something that replaces the existing app, that you'll have to pay again to get it back. If it's not up-front, how is a consumer supposed to make an informed decision.

Tsk, tsk.

Does anyone else get the feeling that this is being released as a NEW OS 10.8 because Windows 8 will be released soon?

They don't want people to think their OS is older. Kind of like Microsofts move with the Xbox. XBox 2 sounded inferior to Playstation 3 so by calling it the 360 they got to use an equivalent mental image.

No, I think it is being released as 10.8 because it comes right after 10.7.

You should really read John Gruber's account of the private demo of 10.8 he got from Phil Schiller. It's not because they want to show up Windows 8, it's because they want to start having yearly releases of OS X to coincide with yearly releases of iOS.

Apple's Mac strategy is exactly opposite what most people on MR seem to think it is.

Just uninstalled the beta from my Mac. Didn't like it to begin with, but no point keeping it as it'll expire.

If ML is going to cost money (which it seems that it will) I certainly will be sticking to Lion. There's not a single feature that I like of ML.

Wish they put out a real OS update. Nothing big since 10.5 IMO.

10.5 - revolutionary
10.6 - fix 10.5 issues
10.7 - OK, but no "wow" factor. Launchpad as another way to access apps? Well .. okay.
10.8 - 10 new changes to Lion (so far?) Not going to pay $30 for that.

Snow Leopard was awesome. Super stable and snappy. I only used Leopard for a few months, but SL did add a slew of features and stability.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I understand that no matter what you do someone will not like it, but I'm just glad they're going to allow you to do mirroring and iMessage. That alone would be evought for me to pay for the upgrade. Looking forward to purchasing a MacBook pro later on this year.

In more shocking news today it's rumored that Adobe Lightroom 4 will also be a paid upgrade once moved from public beta to final release. Microsoft, which will release its new version 8 OS as a public beta later this month, also will not be free upon final release. Leeches and self-entitled people everywhere are shocked at the corporate greed.

It's an update to iChat!!! Nobody wants the entire OS for free. It's an addition to iChat and iCloud, both of which are already included in Lion and clearly run on older machines. It's a silly thing to take away and a clear ploy to make people want to upgrade based on what we know about ML so far. Similar to Siri.

Calm down people. Apple is letting you have a look at a feature from 10.8, for free! When the beta period ends, your software will work the way it did before.

Damn you Apple. I love your products but unbelievable greed excretes form every pore of you. If it isn't bad enough that my 2007 blackbook won't run Mountain Lion you now are denying your faithful customers useful features. Listen i can't afford a nice shiny new Mac to have this feature, so how about you cut the little guy some slack and make this available to all.

I posted yesterday that the dev preview allowed me to install it on one unsupported Mac, another didn't work(?) but it was clear to me that Messages will be 10.8 only and will be killed on Lion upon expiration (you will have to upgrade) and if you have a machine with an unsupported graphics system you will NOT be able to install Mountain Lion. So yes you must get a new machine.....

Apple is pushing more tech and obsoleting not only the OS faster (i.e. Snow Leopard is now TWO generations back and unsupported with new Apple software) but also their hardware will be outdated faster because they now are in a position that they weren't 10 years ago when development took a long time and machines could still run new things 5+years on. All because they are the biggest company in the world now and have more resources to develop hardware/software faster which means faster obsolescence.

Not anymore! Now a new version of OS X is coming out every 12 months according to Tim Cook. Get ready to upgrade OS X and hardware more frequently if you want or need the latest things!!

but c'mon who isnt going to upgrade? ;) (if you dont have an integrated video a few years old...)

I think I will eventually upgrade. To a flavor of Linux. This "revolutionary" dungeon keeper feature and the direction and mindset that it represents convinced me of it.

I joined the Mac community in 2005 after having been in the PC world since the first PC (yes, dual floppies...GEEZER ALERT). One of the best things about being on the Mac is that 5 years later, my Macs run as good as they did when I purchased them. My oldest is now a MacPro 1,1, and not eligible for ML. On the one hand, we brag that we spend more on Macs but that they last longer and we don't waste countless hours with spy and adware issues (and that time has a value). The downside, is that the longevity of a machine means that newer software, optimized for the newer technology, will not run well on it. So we have a choice....keep the older machines that do what we need them to do, or we replace the hardware in order to use the new software. I'm bummed that my MacPro will not see anymore upgrades (our two iMacs and MacBook Pro units will)...but it's the better choice than being in a system where the a major software upgrade coincides with you being sick of your old, slow and less expensive PC. We win and we lose....but I'll stick with what I have and not complain about it....

Really wish this would work with lion post beta. I love it so far.

They are working on it with 10.7.x updates.

Mountain Lion is just adding a few more features.

----------

Wow, Apple sure has balls.

1. Show the world that it CAN be run on Lion.
2. Release Mountain Lion.
3. Inform that it will no longer run on Lion. Why? Because.

This is different than the artifical requirements of Siri. It wasn't first released for all iPhones and then retracted.

Sure, I understand marketing, but I'm surprised that they didn't just include it in the Mountain Lion Developer Preview alone if this was the plan all along.

Especially those with older integrated graphics cards, something completely irrelevant to messaging, will be annoyed since Mountain Lion won't support those.

Probably no storm and flying chairs about this yet, but rather when the Beta times out.

No, they're letting you beta test their software for free. You can uninstall it. You aren't required to have Messages.

If they discontinued iChat all together forcing people to upgrade to Mountain Lion then I could see your point being valid.

The sense of entitlement and greed is staggering in this thread.

Why do people expect new features for free? Do you expect the developers to work for free? Would you work for free?

This. The funny thing is, had they not come out with the beta, few would be whining about why this isn't going to be available for Lion. It would be just one of the upgrades included in ML.

Waking up...

This Is The side about Apple that i don't like at all. They are artificially limiting The User and know that this Is how they can Pressure him to Upgrade. it's incredible that such behaviour would lead to People hating Microsoft if they die that, but Apple Fans so Not speak up against it and 'swallow' this unfaithful Trick against Apples own customers.

You're quite right. Used to be new iterations of OS X would take 18 mos. to 2 years to materialize. Now the intervals are getting shorter and shorter and each exacts an upgrade from the user.

I've totally come out of denial about this subtle (*only* 29 bucks) but insidious practice. It does remind me more and more of Microsoft, although M$oft's regressive taxation of its users puts Apple's in the deep shade. Still, Apple has risen to the bait of steady revenues from OS "upgrades." The term "legacy" by now has become a parody of itself, and it's beginning to really piss me off.

Are Apple's "innovations" really innovations any longer or are they just tweaks of their customer base?

There, I got it off my chest at last. Now when did you say Mountain Lion will be released, I can't wait... (;

Why do people always try to make it sound like developers don't get paid? Developers don't work for free. Developers work for money which Apple pays them. Developers will get payed so Apple can stay on top of the industry and probably make more money than a lot of us will ever make. The money you pay goes to Apple. Some don't think what appears to be a delta upgrade should be paid for. Comparable delta upgrades on the iPhone and iPad are free. It's not selfish, it's the nature of the industry.

There is no reason whatsoever for consumers to have to spend constantly to be able to do the things they "need". A macbook from 2006 can do everything a new macbook air can, infact it can do more.

People have just let themselves be brainwashed into believing that they MUST have the latest stuff or they are an inferior human being, which as anyone with a braincell will tell you is utter BS.

I can't believe my late 2008 macbook cannot run Mountain Lion. It's just wrong on Apple's part.

but what if you can't upgrade...

I've heard that MBP with the ATI X1600 won't be able to run Moutain Lion. I would love to upgrade but if my machine can't then why should the beta end for me. The app works completely fine under Lion. I feel this is a really dick move by Apple. I understand if your machine can upgrade to Apple new Kitty then you should but if you can't upgrade Apple shouldn't do this. Just my opinion.
