Thanks for the heads up!

Is this the same with the 30pin to Lightning adapters? If yes I will cancel my order on ebay

Yes!

At this moment and time if its not from apple don't buy it. They will know you've used a dodgy cable if you go in with a burnt port.

A response I got from an Amazon seller I ordered 3 lightning/30-pin adapters from ....

The reports stem from the discovery of a small chip inside the official apple connecter lead, there has been much speculation that it is some sort of authentation device to stop 3rd party devices functioning. However Apple have made no comment about what the chip is for. The factory producing the adapters for me tell me that the chip is there to reallocate the pins depending on which way round the plug is connected. They are able to produce an adapter that only works if you plug it in the right way round, so if you have an adapter on a dock and plug the phone in facing forward then no problem, however what we want is a device that works either way round. This is why the connecter was not launched straight away, they are finalising a work around so the adapter mimics the chip function in the apple original but using a different chip (the apple one is custom built for apple) .

Until we get a working model delivered there is no way to say if they will be identical in function to the original but I would think that unless it does the same job then there is little point in producing it.

If you are worried then I am happy to issue a refund until there is more information.

Very bizarre considering there are no aftermarket cables or adapters being shipped to anyone that I know of, put me right if I'm wrong ? I can't believe any seller is going to send you a cable or adapter that will bun out your iPhone 5.

----------

Well actually it's £6 vs £25 here....

They are actually $19 in the US so the original poster is saving $7. Wouldn't pay $12 for a knock off cable, not enough saving. I've purchased 2 adapters for £6 each so is well worth the saving! There's nothing wrong with trying to save some money instead of burning your cash buying these from apple.

Have you received them?

Too funny, I got the same message as the OP and got a refund.

I will head to Apple and get an official adapter.

I ordered some from amazon and have received a refund for it.... Yet when I log into my account it says dispatched???

I can't believe people aren't angrier about this. Apple is basically doing a money grab from us early adopters.

buying a knockoff cable to save $7 on an accessory for your $200-$400 new phone? Some of you kids don't deserve nice things...

Ok I'll bite....
Because the adaptors are £30 in the apple store, and £3 on eBay! That's a big saving when you need more than one!
Shall I also spend £100 on a case? Or get a reasonable one for £10?

me i would just pay the extra 9-10 dollars for a genuine part thats no gonna give me problems or risking burning out my charging port.

This sucks! I was actually going to come on here and ask if anyone has seen any 3rd party charge cables in black or any car chargers for the iPhone 5 but it looks like there aren't any of either.

For the iPhone 4S, I had a retractable charge cable which was great. I hate long cables, especially in the car, looks all messy. I especially hate a long white cable since my car in all black inside.

I already ordered this one. It looks like an Apple Charging Cable, right?

OR the company's supplying the third party accessories are getting it wrong? Which one is right?

What about the USB chargers that go into a cigarette lighter? Someone mentioned those in another thread. Are they safe?

USB charges are safe as long as you use the official Apple cable with them.

IE, no charger that has a cigarette plug on one end and a lightning plug on the other. Only use the ones that are a cigarette plug with a USB socket on it.

Why would you call someone a kid? Seems disrespectful to put down people who aren't hurting anyone and simply trying to save money (even if they made a mistake).

I wouldn't go as far as kids there are some penny pinching adults out there too. If you got 300-900 bucks for a iphone 5. If uou have 100 dollars a month for a cell phone bill. You got 20 bucks for a cable. Period.

So what happens when the chip in the official Apple cables goes bad? Your iPhone gets fried if you plug it in the wrong way?

I thought officially licensed accessories say "Made for iPhone" on the packaging. I would imagine to get this accessories have to have the correct chip.

This is just an adapter that plugs into your cigarette lighter and has the USB slot. You'd still have to use the charging cable.

Yes, that's what I mean. What are some good brands?

On my lunchbreak I read some reviews of these and a lot said that it won't charge correctly due to pins inside and people were soldering them to work right. Which ones don't have this problem? Some said they were for iPad but would that be too much power?

ORRRRR, you spent all your money on the iphone and your bill lol. But who knows, maybe you believe that if they had it in their budget to upgrade but not enough for a charger then they should not have upgraded at all....

just a thought. Luckily I dont need any extra cables. Now my wife on the other hand...

Unfortunately, "looks like" is not enough. It should work exactly like Apple's. It is too early to buy these cables IMO but the OP did not know it had a special chip and warned us! I wish everybody does what he did!

I wonder if it would be better to just buy the adapter and then 3rd party 30 pin connectors.

What's the point in that? Am I missing something? The adaptor is £25, and the 3rd party cable is £5 for example.... Or you can just buy the genuine cable for £15. ??? Your losing money.

Apple spent time and money developing a new connector that works no matter which way you plug it in. They are selling the cable for the same price as the old 30 pin dock cables. Just buy the cables or wait for Apple licensed ones (I loved the RND 30 pin cables)

This new connector will be around for many years, so might as well buy them if you are going to be using iDevices. I have bought 4 extras so far for our 2 phones. One for both of our night stands, both of our cars and both of our desks.
