It's extremely buggy and slow... Key taps don't register, crashed a few times, etc.

I really thought and hoped BBM would kill a few messaging apps out there... But, it turned out it doesn't hold a candle to most and is just one of the crowd...

Also adding the BBM code feels so old fashioned right now... I just have five contacts because we are techies and used to love BBM once upon a time AND we meet up everyday for a drink or two... And 2 of them still haven't upgraded from their old bb phones... A lot of my contacts might have bb phones or BBM downloaded, but, I'm not gonna message each and every one of them to ask them their codes and then add them and then wait for their approval... Sounds too cumbersome now...

Ummm what phone do you have that BBM is giving you so many problems? I used it for quite some time yesterday. Not a single bug as far as I can tell, not slow at all, and didn't crash even once. I asked the friends I was messaging how they liked it and they really enjoyed it - no complaints.

----------

After the update today it's much better and smoother... Not a crash yet... But I still have just 5 contacts...

What update? I don't see anything in my update history in the App Store.

I downloaded it when it first came out 2 months ago before it was pulled off from the store... Now it updated with the new version which you guys just downloaded...

if this came out a few years ago, it would have been better for blackberry since blacberry users could communitcate with their iphone/android friends.

now, most people have switched so as a previous poster said...to little to late for blacberry.

as much as i support a canadian company, they're more an embarrassment to CAnada then anything else

Yes, Blame CANADA

Blackberry's smartphone market share has fallen to somewhere around 4%.

Their web traffic share is somewhere between .5% and 2%.

If you sincerely think that a new and highly-publicized messaging app's 1st day prominence in the App Store is nothing more than a novel anomaly, then I pity you.

XOXOXO

RIM fell from where they once were, but if you enjoy seeing a company fail that did nothing to you personally...I feel pity for you. It's like some of the members here feel they're going to win a prize if RIM goes away.

Yes, these are bound to be enlightening and unbiased articles, considering the course.

Enjoy the bizarre OS, outdated specs, and lack of apps. Oh yeah, and don't forget to bring the charger with you.

I've had no battery life issues in the 6mths I owned the Z10 (BB10.0/10.1/10.2Beta releases) … and I've personally found with my use habits not changing (other than ability to download any file via the native OS from the browser which I cannot do on iOS) it lasted 2/3hrs longer than iOS6/7 on iPhone 5 (both devices at 16GB).

Bizarre OS - a personal opinion but the layout is MUCH cleaner and clearer on the os and to the point than iOS is: Calendar appointments (adding/reviewing) Contact information is not as limited as iOS, and a few other things.

Outdated Specs: Being a Mac user I thought you wouldn't make such a bold statement.

Specs vs Usability:
Can it browser HTML/Flash based sites (full and mobile): Yes
Does it have LTE, Dual-Band 802.11n: YES & YES
Does it have NFC - and apps to use wireless payments: YES & Yes even if limited for use in Canada (but the limitation is not just the apps 2, but the infrastructure is limited and thus limits ALL NFC based devices regardless of platform)
Does it have expandable storage: YES (Class 10 XCSD MicroSD card)
Does it have an 8MP Camera with LED flash: YES & YES (although not sure how many glass lenses it uses but it surely is NOT 5 like iPHone 5 has.
Does it have standard MicroUSB2.0 slot for data and charging: YES
Does it have GPRS/EDGE/HSPA(+) support: YES for ALL and multiple bands (comparable to iPhone 5 along with LTE on both as well)
Does it have a decent display that works in direct sunlight: YES same IPS display as the iPhone 5 (although I think plastic vs glass is used I'm unsure)
Does it support Comparable Media Codecs and playback: YES - actually it can play XVID and AVI video files natively; iOS cannot.

So what EXACTLY is "Outdated" in your opinion on the "specs" of this device or how it is used?!

ive been having this same issue since late last night. i cant get past it and its really annoying me. i got the email and everything, even set up my BBID ahead of time on the BB website. no dice.

Are you trying to use it on multiple BBM's ? As on multiple devices? If you're still signed in on another you cannot switch while signed in on another device.

I'm late to this thread but I'm going to say it anyway - I do not see the point of this app, not now. A couple of years ago, with the reputation they had and the gap that was forming then, they could have sown up the cross-platform messaging market completely. But now, between iMessage on IOS, whatsapp, and even things like Facebook messenger (who's not on Facebook now) it's just missed the boat.

I'm sure curiosity is driving a lot of the downloads, and there may be a few out there with some loyalty to it of old, but for most people now this is irrelevant.

After Numerous Delays, BlackBerry Messenger for iOS to Launch Today [Update: ...

I downloaded it when it first came out 2 months ago before it was pulled off from the store... Now it updated with the new version which you guys just downloaded...

Oh well obviously that one was buggy LoL. I'm sure that's why they pulled it in the first place. :p

Anybody got any good links for the advantages of this version of BBM?

I hear it was popular in the past, when the US had/perhaps still has the most punitive SMS pricing.

Does this cross platform implementation actually have any advantages over, say, iMessage?
Reliability (real, not imagined, based on past implementations)?
Privacy, say because it originates outside US and may not have NSA hooks that most if not all encryption schemes were found to have?

I find iMessage pretty good. Has issues, but getting better—and would like to hear why I'd need BBM.

what have they done? not necessary the company but the top management.

they should have seen what was coming and adapted and innovated or atleast followed more closely of the growing trends, such as the introuction of android, the sucessfulness of app stores and improving hardware/specs in their devices.

but no blackberry did nothing and lagged behind year after year.

the once dominated smartphone on the planet is now wispering away.

so YEs it is an embarasment to Canada to have such a company
I guess we're embarrassed by different things... I like my iPhone a lot but still miss my BlackBerry from time to time.... They had the best integration and smartphone experience up until the iPhone. Their always-on connectivity is something Apple built off of.... Jobs even described the iPhone's push email features as being "same as a BlackBerry"... they were the industry standard.

Agree they're no longer relevant but I have a soft spot for the huge contribution they made.

I think the main reason they lost relevance is the same reason they were successful... they defined their product around a particular set of users... primarily business folks. I know it was a huge help for me while on long trips/in taxis to have email integrated as well as it was... I appreciated their dedication to my user experience, and not cluttering it with unnecessary distractions.... I still miss my physical keyboard!

One more thing: Before the iPhone I contend that BB had the most beautiful smartphones.

Don't think there was anything close to that design/detail out there at the time.

That's literally the one feature I miss about my android.

I misss a bunch of things about Android sms sending ability on my mac, notfications drop down is better, Quick drop down settings - you can pick what shortcuts you want in it, can delete emails from the notification drop down an not bother going into the app for emails you know you don't have to read, can set notification sounds for any app, some widgets are handy like calendar, facebook, twitter and being able to share any media files via wifi direct with fellow android friends.

Thus I will probably go back since from a functional point of view iOs 7 was a fail for the things I wanted. I thought it would at least catch up to the current android features at the very least. Instead we lost a more simple quick drop down with quick facebook, twitter widgets. A more confusing calendar and an unnecessary 3 tabbed notification menu and the equivalent of an ugly winterboard theme. To me the only thing that can save iOs 7 is a jailbreak and some good jailbreak apps but jailbreaking seems to be get more difficult since we don't see them coming out long after an iOs update.

The only thing I might miss from ios is the mailbox app but I think I would get over it and just use reminders instead of setting email reminders.

I'll use it...

Like iMessage but compatible between all devices.

I know people that still have Blackberrys so being able to BBM them will be cool.

So many haters... now I really don't need to pay for texts. I am aware WhatsApp exists but so few people use it. At least BBM is something a lot of people know about.

Really?

According to BlackBerry, there are still more than 60 million BBM users worldwide exchanging more than 10 billion messages per day.

WhatsApp alone has more than 300 million active users, sending 27 billion messages daily.

download it, and can't even use it? wow these guys are amateurs

It's actually the opposite. Instead of releasing something and having your infrastructure burn down due to overwhelming demand, you see what the actual demand is, and increase your capacity accordingly.

Who needs THIS...

So... BlackBerry's hold useable charge 5 time longer than an iPhone...

...and is the ONLY truly secure phone on the planet

...so Blackberry BRICKS phones reported as stolen by the user, effectively making them a non starter for phone thieves...

Apple could do all that... couldn't it?

APPARENTLY NOT...

The list of things the Blackberry can do that iPhones and Android phones can't is WAY too long to list here.

There is a reason the POTUS has a blackberry, instead of another phone. It can actually be secured... even from any timely snooping by the NSA.

When I put in my email and press I got the email nothing happens I have tried everything, I even registered online and everything is done I just need to sign on, anyone else? I have tried on two phones same thing, its sad that they cant even get this right

Have you got the email tho. If you have just leave it a few hours.
I got the email this morning and click got email but nothing happened tried this afternoon and works fine

What phone are you using? On my iPhone 5, it is not slow at all. And i did not notice any crashes....yet!

But yea i agree that sending out BB pins does feel rather cumbersome, but i know a few people that still use BBM regularly. Atleast the app is optimized for iOS 7 :)

I would prefer a pin over my mobile number.
