That seems... extreme for whats presumably a software bug but in any case - perhaps you didn't want the new laptop as much as you thought and this is a convenience way to back out?

Mac OS while good still has its fair share of odd software bugs as does any OS.
Umm ok is your name Peggy? ya see Peggy at Apple says it is a hardware issue. I’ll forgive the cheeky attempt to judge my motivation because ya know internets.

You have me thinking. I may have solved the problem. The only difference between my two machines was that i had a pop up blocker extension on the older machine. I have turned it on the new machine and so far so good. So perhaps GoldfishRT is right and Peggy is wrong.

Ok just verified by turning of the blocker on the 2015 and went to the same site. Verified all other browser settings were identical. Guess what beach ball on the 2015. I only update to say all is good and I am back to being very tickled with my machine.

Honest question - I've never heard of a hardware malfunction causing high CPU and RAM usage, reported and apparent actual usage since you say it got hot on you. Did they give you any insight into what it could be? T2 related?

Not trying to be cheeky it just seemed kind of hard to believe really. 24 hours isn't a long time to have a machine and diagnose whats wrong with it. If you aren't satisfied with it you aren't satisfied. I'm not going to judge - I've been through about 8 laptops in the last year.

Re: issues ...

I think that what should be obvious (but is easily overlooked) is the simple fact that the posts on this forum about the issues are not a representative sample of 2018 MBP users. People come here largely to seek help with issues, so you are only seeing a small segment of the MBP user base, and mostly those who have had issues.

We tend to forget about the (probably) large user base that bought 2018 MBPs and haven't faced a single issue. None of those folks came here to say, "Hey, I bought a 2018 MBP and everything is working fine." So you are not seeing data from that set of users here.

As for me, personally - I did face a minor keyboard issue, and daily KP crashes while on High Sierra, but my mind got over the keyboard issue and upgrading to Mojave fixed the KP problem. And I was always happy with my 2018 MBP, issues or no issues :)

I have edited my earlier post . You are correct and your remark got me thinking, thanks for that.

Razer has a RTX 2060/70/80 set of laptops but the base model with the 2060 is 2,400 and that only gets you a FHD screen (at 144Hz) and 512GB drive. The X1E that I got was less money, more storage and a 4k screen. I gave up a better GPU, but under the circumstances it made all the sense in the world for my needs

You right it all depends on your needs. The reason I would get one would be for the Nvidia GPU and its use in ML/AI work. In that area the 1050 would be a 4-5X improvement over the i7 CPU but a 2070 would be a 8-10X compute improvement and support larger models so perhaps even higher overall improvement. And given these improvement, spending $3,000+ is not unreasonable to me.

My guess (and it is only a guess) is that by mid year Lenovo will be shipping RTX 20xx X family systems. Lenovo has already announced Legion Y700s with the RTX

Are they?

Lets talk through the issues.
Butterfly keyboard. Failure rates in the 2016 and 2017 models were significant enough that Apple was compelled to institute a repair program, and update the keyboard with a silicone cover. That cover may not be working fully because we do see members here complaining about the keyboard on their 2018 MBPs and MacBook Airs are failing. That tells me, that the keyboard is flawed by design, not due to a manufacturing defect that might affect some people.

T2 crashing, like the butterfly keyboard, I've seen people mention that the MBA, and Mini are having stability issues related to the T2. I was one of the fortunate ones who didn't run into any of the issues, but I also did not upgrade to Mojave nor did you put the computer to sleep (seems sleep may be one of the causes).

coil whine and static speakers, I can't speak personally about these as my MBP did not have them, but many people do, so I raise them here only to say when there's smoke there's fire

Vega GPU screen flicker Some members are complaining about the new Vega GPU causing screen flicker - some report that it can be (or has) been fixed via software.

Throttling/cooling The thin design of the MBP has inhibited cooling to the point that many people seem who own the 2.2 base machine enjoy a cooler and faster running MBP. There's many benchmarks that seem to indicate that the 2.2 is running faster then the i9 and/or if the i9 is faster, its not by much, even though the price is much higher. This isn't too surprising and Dell is dealing with the same issue, the hot running i9 cannot be cooled adaquetly without a redesigned thermal solution. Apple nor dell did that and these CPUs/GPUs run too hot

Any one one of these issues would raise a red flag, yet there seems to be an over abundance of problems inherent in the MBP, and since Apple sells these as premium laptops, I personally question whether spending almost 3k on a premium laptop that has so many listed problems. True not everyone are having these issues, nonetheless I think its worth noting. This is just my opinion but I'd rather not deal with the potential failure of the keyboard or the stability problems of the T2

You've been around long enough to know that GPU, throttling, audio, and other issues have all been complaints on these forums about various Macs. And they are legitimate complaints. The keyboard is unique in both how polarizing the usability is and also how the design is prone to failure. Jury is out on the 2018 with the new membrane.

My point is if you read these forums and base your purchase off the "issues" that you read about, I couldn't see anyone buying any Apple product ever. I think it's good people report things that come up, so we can all inspect a little closer and not get stuck with a dud, but I don't think anyone should be afraid to make a purchase. The 14 day return is there, and AppleCare+ is always a good idea, although maybe becoming a necessity, as these computers become more expensive and less repairable.

Lesson learned. Thank you.

I decided to upgrade my 2015 MBP and ordered a 2018 (spec below). I am aware of the potential hazards based on the feedback in the forums. I have come to the conclusion that this is the place to voice concerns over issues, not to sing praises. And lord I hope I am right:(!

Of course after placing my order yesterday I began more seriously looking at the forum, and frankly hoping to confirm my bias that the issues are overblown. I haven't had much luck to that end.

Anyway I will be putting it through its paces and report back. I did by the AppleCare + product, and I don't normally do that. Clearly I would prefer to never use it.

I did the trade in program, I don't think it was a good deal, buttt I don't have to mess with selling it.

Wish me luck!!!

MBP 13.3 SG/2.7GHZ QC/16GB/1TB-USA
Good luck. I am hoping for the best for you.

Darnit!!! Completely different issue than the "gate" issues, but just began a return. Recall I have had this machine for 24 hours almost to the minute. Using Safari the beachball would start spinning and using ram to the point where my legs were getting hot and I could hear the fan and had 1.9Gb ram left of my 16. I mean WTF. So, called Apple they did a reset etc. It started happening during our screen share. She asked if I wanted to take in for repair, I explained my geography and 350 miles would no be acceptable. I could have sent it in for repair, but I said you know what I think I want to get a refund. So the sent me to sales support, they asked if I wanted a refund or replacement, I chose refund. Need to re-think the whole thing. Anyway Thats that. I have verified that is was the other computer by using my 2015 which I am using to write this post, and no issue. Darnit!!

I’m sorry. I should have read through the whole thread before I replied.

It's okay, i opened 2 threads on potential mac mini issues after placing an order and almost returned it before i even received it. :D
these threads can make a person anxious.

Thanks, but it was user error really. I had not turned on a pop-up blocker in Safari. Turned it on and all good. I reverse engineered the problem on my 2015 and when I turned off the blocker it did the same thing. So far so good. I will give it 6 months before I am comfortable saying "I did it right". But love the machine so far.
