There are also very few options for high end smartphones under 5 inches. 4.7-4.9 is a good size with a large companion model 5.5+ launching alongside it.

So the majority WAAAAYYYYYYY outweigh the few on this forum. That's an impressive amount, one third of worldwide sales! Not surprised Apple wants to play catch up to that.
I laugh at all those on here proclaiming what they think people want, when millions of people have chosen a bigger screen is what they want.

But no doubt it will keep the 5S around for those who want something smaller.

Do you guys have a mockup of what a 5''+ iPhone would look like? I feel like that would have been helpful to include in the article.

1/3 of people have a big phone

Apple has the best selling phone in the US just with a SMALL phone, outselling the BIG phones

Therefore, Apple BIG plus small phones, will dominate the market.

I came over to iPhone from a larger droid X in 2011 and have stuck with it in-spite of the tiny screen, not because of it. The 3.5" screen of my iPhone 4 nearly ended it for me as it made the device virtually unusable as a mobile computer. The iPhone 5 gave me a reason to stay but not for much longer. For me the screen size is the biggest negative of an iPhone and I'm eagerly awaiting a larger version, hopefully a 5.5". A smart phone is more a mobile computing device capable of making phone calls than it is a phone capable of performing computer functions. I really prefer iOS to android but I can't wait much longer on apple to produce a larger device.

Headline could easily be restated as:

"Ahead of iPhone 6 Launch, Two-Thirds of Smartphones Sold Have Screens Smaller Than 5"

Takes on a very different tact then, huh? :)

The story was being generous as it only mentions 5" + size phones, but the majority of smart phones sold have screens larger than Apple's 4" iPhone. The average smart phone screen size today is 4.84. That's the AVERAGE, which is MORE than two-thirds.

More accurately the headline should read

"Ahead of iPhone 6 Launch, Most Smart Phones Sold Have Screens Larger than 4"

Do you know about Dr. Freud? His ideas about the male preoccupation with size might be of particular interest for some here.

Anyway, I'm quite happy with the 4S' size and performance since 2011 :)

Samsung makes an s5 mini, why cant apple just do that? Seems to cater to both markets

The S5 'mini' you talk about has the screen sized at a possible 4.5".

So even that would have a decent amount more screen size than the iPhone 5S. Apple needs bigger screens. A 4.7" and 5.5" model is a great answer to this need.

You guys saying a 4.7" phone won't fit in your pocket yet your 4" iPhone is perfect, really? Please. It will fit in your pocket.

Correct. Mega-phones are a small portion of the market. Big enough for Apple to go after, but certainly not deserving of 3+ years of endless media attention. Most people want their portable devices compact.

Nonsense, the MAJORITY of smartphones today are larger than 4". 4.84" to be exact. The MAJORITY of a market is certainly a market Apple should focus on, which is EXACTLY why Apple is releasing a 4.7" iPhone 6.

Dejo, clearly you should be writing these little bits of "news." Seriously.

Am I the only one sick of hearing continually about the iPhone 6 on the front page of MacRumors? I wish there was more of a focus on the Mac, especially considering the name of this website. It seems like there isn't a day that goes by without us hearing some new blurb about the 6 (which mostly is just recycled information). Where's more news about Macintoshes, Mac OS X, and Mac software (Aperture, anyone?) - seriously?

One news item every other day is fine. This is not.

I barely talk on the phone anymore so I find the majority of my iDevice time spent on my iPad Air. I can't even type accurately on my 4S anymore because I'm so used to the larger screen now.

This is coming from someone with fairly little hands.

You know why this is? Because there is barely any Mac news coming in in the first place.

Here's a sanitized version of MacRumors for you to bookmark.

You might be right about some wanting a large screen but please get a grip on statistics before posting. An average of 4.8 doesn't tell you that most people want or buy an 4.8 " screen.
I'm exaggerating now but an average salary of $20,000 tells you only that, it doesn't tell you that some may be part time and earning $5K or that some may be movie stars earning $50M, (these outer values can skew your average massively). For most common you want at least the Modal value.

Apparently it's about 33% of the market. That is not a small portion and absolutely big enough to warrant the production of a 5" or larger device (although I personally wouldn't buy it).

So, the market clearly has differentiated into different segments since the 3,5" start in about 2007. It makes sense that Apple now targets each of these segments with a 4", 4'7" and a 5" device.

So that means 66% would be the iPhone. Still pretty good market share :p

Imagine the market share it would have if it had a screen larger than 4 inches!

What bothers me is, I don't believe Apple is going to do a larger phone. The best rumours don't mention screen size, and that disturbs me deeply. Maybe Apple hasn't decided, which seems the best explanation why there's 2 sizes out there, but without official word (or leak), I'm assuming the worst.

When the 5 was due, MacRumors had these tiny iPad-like 5" renderings that must have gotten some traction, because Apple leaked to lower expectations. I don't know if that will happen this time, but we'll have 6 months of those large iPod touch-looking renders by the announcement.

We really should have had the option of a 5" in 2012. By then it was clear Samcopy was making good mindshare as well as marketshare with larger phones, even if the screens weren't any good.

I bought the 5, thinking we're screwed for 2 years, now anyway. And when it came down to it, I just couldn't bring myself to get a google phone.

This time around, Windows Metro is up and almost useable. I'm looking at the Nokia Windows phones right now, in case Apple stiffs us again, 2 years later, with a small screen. I can get a 6" 1520 for half the price of the current iPhone, and if that's the sacrifice I have to make…

It seems the only thing Apple will listen to is loyal customers buying another brand.
Customers have been begging them.
Their sales people have been telling them.
It even dawned on Schiller, years too late, that people are only buying Apple for the ecosystem, the phone although nicely made, was an embarrassment (naturally he blamed the PR company—that's what you do).

But ultimately, Apple is run by a parts-guy (like Jobs) and Cook knows how much more profit can be made with a smaller screen and all you have to say is, "but feel the quality" and have Ive say something earnest, and the reality distortion field does the rest.

I felt dirty forking over for a 5, but I won't feel as dirty if I give half that to Microsoft for a Metro phone. Call it my thanks for bringing keyboard shortcuts to the Mac. And if a few others act instead of whinging, maybe Apple will take notice.

I suppose the other two-thirds who don't want a large phone are inadequate, they just haven't gotten the memo.

The things a person can learn here.

Ahh.... you have no facts here, sorry. Two-thirds have smaller then 5" phones, you can't be sure if these phones aren't bigger then 4" which would still be considered larger then what the guy you quoted was talking about

A jailbroken phone gets you away from those limitations. I would dearly love an iphone 6 that is jailbroken. If it's 4.7-5" that is!!

The only issue with that approach is that you have the constant waiting for a jailbreak to come out. Some of them have take many many months of waiting which I don't have to worry about with an Android.
