I should point out that I'm pretty good at this predicting lark -- I wrote this: http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/i...re-most-looking-forward-in-iphone-6s-3623508/

Got virtually everything right, aside from waterproofing -- that I said was unlikely anyway!

Seriously?...............

Force Touch predicted back in January https://www.macrumors.com/2015/01/15/iphone-6s-2gb-ram-force-touch/
A9 & Camera predicted back in May(and it's not like this is a surpise that they will improve the chip and camera every year) https://www.macrumors.com/2015/05/12/kgi-iphone-6s-2015-predicitions/
Rose Gold in March https://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/10/apple-force-touch-pink-iphone6s/

I'm sorry what did you predict/got right other than compiling all the rumours from months ago?

If the iPad Air 3 is to be a reality this year it has to have minor upgrades that can literally be slipped in place with relatively minor engineering challenges. Apple marketing then has to try and sell the upgrade as significant but also minor -- something only they can do.

  1. A better CPU (A9) = easy. Not sure if the A8 and A9 pinout is the same but if Apple controls everything it shouldn't be that difficult to sort out. Note: Not the A9X, which is a whole different beast and is the iPad Pro exclusive.
  2. 3GB or RAM = nope, that would require a significantly updated mainboard and perhaps the same kind of new memory controller found in the iPad Pro. 2GB is easily enough for the Air. Remember that iOS is designed to run on devices with 1GB.
  3. 2nd gen touch ID = easy.
  4. 3D Touch = nope, would require complete reengineering of the device. Apple's too busy doing other things.
  5. Maybe some kind of boosted Wi-Fi or Bluetooth? Easy. I'm not sure what's new in these areas, though.

One thing to note here is that Apple might still be dithering on this decision, waiting to see what demand is like for the iPad Pro and also to see what manufacturing challenges arise from its production. If it turns out there's capacity for an updated Air, they might go ahead and do it. (I should add that some of these questions might already be answered by now but they weren't answered sufficiently for the launch event this week.)

We know from stories in the Isaac book that Apple can turn on a pinhead when it comes to manufacturing. Literally overnight they can switch materials and technologies.

Whatever the case, you'd be the world's biggest idiot if you bought an Air right now. Don't order until 1st Nov, at the earliest. You'll be getting a great tablet no matter what, but you might be getting a slightly faster tablet if the Air 3 does indeed come to fruition.

I like how you think sir, While I still have extremely high doubt there will be an Air 3 this year, I'm patient and will wait until mid/late October just to be sure. I have a Mini 2, iPhone, and Mac to use since I sold my Air 2 anyhow. I was going to just buy it again in a few weeks but what's 30+ more days? lol
What would be awesome is if Apple actually released and gave the Air 3 an A9X, an updated camera, or some other feature easily made.
The Pro has the iPencil and Keyboard as exclusives, I am not sure if having the A9X would be exclusive as well. It all depends on if it would fit easily into the Air 3 with little effort. I could see the Air getting a silent spec update like the 15" rMBP did back in May. Apple would just do a usual press release in October sometime, but will still highlight and promote the crud out of the iPad Pro.
***end of my Apple conspiracy theory*** (that would be sweet if some of it actually happened.)

The main thing that's been bugging me about no Air update rumors... is the stock holders and board of directors would probably not be happy with no real push to sell more regular sized iPads in addition to iPad Pro and Mini. Apple is a company just like any other, so having their cake and eating it is obviously what they'll want to do.

The other thing is that I'm SURE of is that the Air 3 wouldn't cut into the iPad Pro's sales, same as the iPad Mini 4 that WAS just announced won't either. Because why announce it if it had a threat of cutting into the Pro's profits?
*I might be crazy... OR I am actually on to Apple's secret plans. Heh heh heh.

Yeah I'm probably crazy. ;)

I suspect Apple's most interested right now in simply dominating the tablet marketplace, and keeping Android out. If it sacrifices one product range for another, or if diversification reduces sales of a particular product, then that's less of a concern.
