I have been wondering whether we'll see an Air 3 this year. Kinda want to upgrade my Air 1 this December, and am hoping for an updated iPad. I'd like to see force touch on it, and maybe A9 perhaps?
Anyway, what does everyone think? Is there a chance we'll see an Air 3 or will the Air 2 stick around for a while longer?

Probably later in the year, I would be truly shocked if a substantial upgrade was shown on the 9th. So the Keynote after the, be it October or next year would probably be the best bet. I would like to see an A9X chipset as the A9 is very similar to the A8X in terms of output in the same way the A6X was to the A7 in the iPad Air. So at worse, have it clocked higher. Either way, I am hoping for Force Touch and perhaps something else special under the hood. Not activating the NFC chip because the idea of walking into Costa and waving an iPad in someone's face is just odd. So yes, I am not Tim's love interest so would not know. But Jony told me at dinner...

I hope the lack of rumors just turns out to be like similar to what the mini 3 was: not many rumors on it and it turned out to be a minor upgrade. Maybe they'll just put an A9 in it and maybe force touch (after they announce the iPad Plus and iPad mini 4 they might just say, 'and we have the new Air 3, it also has the A9 chip and force touch', like they did with the mini 3). We'll see. I'm not sure if I'll upgrade my Air 1 if a new one isn't released.

If there was an upgrade imminent, even a minor one with a new chip and Force Touch, it would seem we would have seen some parts by now, but so far nothing.

Yep, it seems like their probably will be no Air 3. Guess I'll wait till whenever it does get released.

The iPad 4 used the same chassis as the iPad 3, with the Lightning connector being the only external difference. An iPad Air 3 might well just be an upgraded Air 2 with a new processor and perhaps the 13 megapixel and 5 megapixel camera sensors used in the iPhone 6s, in which case I'd upgrade from my Air 1.

Who knows?

True, true. I would upgrade my air 1 as well if it has a new processor and a few other upgrades. If processor is the only thing different, I'm not sure.

Yep, who knows. Still, it'd be odd if they updated it without Force Touch which I'd expect to become standard across all products in the next year.

True. I'm sure the iPad air 2 will be an upgrade from my iPad 1 and iPad 4th generation.

Yes that makes sense as well. I honestly see it being a short part of the keynote, possibly even on Wednesday as the rumors are saying the mini 4 and iPad Plus will be released then, just them saying "the new air 3 also has the a9 chip, and force touch, along with the new iSight and FaceTime HD cameras". That'd make sense to me, and it'd be great!

This could explain the lack of rumours for the iPad air 3.

All they have to do is take care of the screen vibration problem and I'm IN. If they don't, I'm out.

Here's hoping...

I'm such a geek, I love getting new devices and usually do just about every year for my bday coming in December. But my MacBook Air 2014 and iPhone 6 are absolutely great and won't need upgrading this year. So my Air 1 is really the only one that could use an upgrade, so I'm really hoping for the Air 3!

I've read too many posts about how great and actually over powered the Air 2 already is to warrant a 'need' for Apple to upgrade it, yet. Maybe early next year.

Besides, a shiny new Air 3 would cut into the spotlight being shown on the highly touted new iPad Pro.

There was a rumour a few weeks ago about the iPad Pro being iPad6,8. That sounds like there are three iPads this year, as there are usually no more than three strings for each iPad model (the only exception being the iPad 2, which had separate GSM and CDMA 3G models).
I'm calling it, Mini 4, Air 3, Pro.

EDIT: Also, just realised this also means good things for the Mini. The original Mini had the iPad2 strings, like the iPad 2, and the Mini 3 had the iPad4 strings, like the Air and Mini 2. If the Mini 4 is a shrunken down Air 2, it would have the iPad5 strings, like the Air 2. In that case, even an Air and Pro couldn't account for 8 strings.

TLDR: We'll likely see an Air 3 and a full specced Mini 4 this year.

What would decrease the most in value (iPair 2 16GB or a 128GB) when the iPad air 3 comes out?

I am really, really hoping we get an iPad Air 3. If we don't I'll be a tad annoyed with Apple, but I guess if we don't get an Air 3 I may end up getting the "iPad Pro" .... IF it is really an actual product, (I still am not 100% convinced it will be real) or if it is I think it might be more for business stuff. Also it would be a first gen... So I guess I'll be a bit weary about getting one.
