What do you think? Thanks :)

Edit: Home button on bottom

Looks like it's a bit yellow on the left, but this blue screen is just a test.

Do some real world usage tests - Notes, this site, settings. If you don't notice it in these three apps, then I reckon you won't notice it at all.

If you got it, but can't see it, then a tree doesn't fall and hit a bear taking a dump in the woods... or something like that. Point is, keep it and feel lucky you got one that doesn't seem to be too bad.

I'm sure there are plenty of good units out there, but people seeing it on a lot of Apple store demo Airs is really concerning.

Mine

Edit: That greenish splodge in the middle isn't actually how the screen looks lol

Edit2: I don't see the greenish splodge when viewing this pic on my iPhone. Was viewing it at a funny angle on my MacBook Air.

You might be right. I've seen a handful now, either my own exchanges or friends, and every single one had this issue. I'm just going to live with mine.

Opposite for me. It's my second replacement and I got the same issue. When I compared my screen to the ones on display, mine not only had the "yellowing on the left" issue, but it was a LOT more yellow than the ones on display. It wouldn't bother me as much if the whole display was yellow but uniform... but this two tone thing is just... :/ If I could find ONE other iPad on display like mine, it'd make me feel a little better about my screen haha.

Not sure what I'm going to do either... Might exchange it towards the end. I just don't want to play the swapping game. :( I will say that I'm getting used to my second replacement.. it's a lot less yellow than my first.

Yes, I notice some dimness along the left edge in Notes, Settings, Song Albums etc. I am still on the fence on exchanging this one as everything else seems good. Visited my local Apple store and inspected every Air on the floor. 6/8 of them had the same issue. The only 2 'good' ones had just the faintest dim line visible. I am starting to think this is inherent in the iPad Air design. Also skeptical that this is an adhesive issue which will cure over time.

What makes me feel better about my current Air, is whenever I go have a look at my iPad 3. Bad pink tint all over and horrible yellowing on the right corner (portrait). Strangely, I never noticed how bad my iPad 3 display was until I placed them side by side. In fact, before I bought the Air, I thought my iPad 3 display was perfect! :p

Edit: Added new image (Settings App). 100% brightness, Home button on bottom. Its difficult to see from the photo as the camera doesn't pick this up, but the dimmest area is around the 'Wifi' to 'Personal Hotspot' icons.

It's not a glue issue, people need to stop spreading this rumour. The screen on the Ipad is not glued.

If you don't see it then you have no problem enjoy your Air but if you do, get a refund and wait a few months to see if they sort their issues out. I'm returning mine and skipping this gen not worth the lottery and it costs me money every time I have to travel to the store to get an exchange.

+1

I'm skipping this for now too. May try the mini retina if reports are favourable.

Typing this on my perfectly uniform iPad 2 screen :)

If you have a yellow left/blue right screen, it mixes with the blue to make greenish or yellow-green on the left and accentuates the blue on the right.

If your screen is yellow left/pink right, it makes the right side more purpley.

It's about how the defective shift is changing the base blue. The eye sees the changes more readily against a blue rather than a white screen because the changes are to the spectrum opposites of blue...yellows and pinks.

I've seen tests for screen calibration/quality, and none have included a white screen. That's not to say they don't exist, but they've all been colored screen like to one you've provided.

I have now returned my iPad 16GB Wi-Fi Silver. Mine had some pretty awful light bleeds on the corners.. that was the only issue and I was going to exchange it for another one. But then after a couple of hours of use I noticed the half screen yellow tint issue on white colors and thought it's not worth the exchange. Not now at least. I'll wait and see if they improve their quality control. Perhaps the Mini Retina will be better. Also, I didn't like how plastic the screen and hollow the iPad felt. It made these poping sounds when touching the screen like an instrument, lol.

I already returned my first Air for the left side yellow and dimming issue. My replacement is significantly better but not perfect. Being that I do photography as a hobby and do color correction all the time, I spot changes in hue very easily. But I do realize that the iPad is just a consumer device and it will never be perfect. Even professional displays don't have perfect backlighting and need to be calibrated often for maximum color accuracy.

I went though 7 iPad 3s back in 2012 before I found one that wasn't pink, green, or half yellow. My final unit which was still ever so slightly yellow on the upper left corner held in portrait orientation was purchased 6 months after release when Apple finally seemed to have a better grasp of the issues. My first iPad 2 was perfect as was the original iPad in 2010. It seems that the combination of Retina resolution and the use of single sided backlighting is the culprit with the Airs.

Like so many folks here, I went to both BB and the Apple Store to see the new Airs and spotted the display issues on practically all of them. The display units are at 100% brightness and this masks some of the dimming and yellowing on the left.

Good luck to everyone and hope you get a perfect or a near perfect display.

It's now becoming extremely disheartening to continually read in this thread that people are basically seeing most display models of the air with the yellow tinted left. I can't believe that Apple are not aware of this. I don't expect a perfect screen, but I expect a screen that under normal use doesn't distract from the experience.

I will soldier on and hope I get a screen I can accept, because I don't intend to upgrade again for at least two years.

Aaaand the lottery starts again -

"Meanwhile, LG Display is also responsible for 60% of the panels used on the 9.7 inch Apple iPad Air. The remaining 40% is produced by Samsung Display."

Lucky guys getting perfect Sammy screens, the rest continues whining about crappy LG displays. Why I not wonder?

Is there a way to identify which screen manufacturer an ipad has? Mine is perfect so maybe I got a Samsung

Is there a way to identify which screen manufacturer an ipad has? Mine is perfect so maybe I got a Samsung

When image retention issues arose with some 2012 rMBP, Apple was replacing the LG screens with Samsung screens. People then began complaining that the Samsung screen was too yellow, and they missed the blue tint of their LG screen. The rMBP can be calibrated, however, but most on the Apple Support forum continued to complain about one or the other.

There is a way to identify which screen is on a 15" rMBP using the serial number, but the 13" is a bit of a mystery. No idea with the Air.....

I had mine exchanged today since I had that little bit of discolouration on the left side, a really light yellow tint. Looking at the replacement, I guess it isn't as obvious as it was before... But then again, it could just be me... I wish I didn't have to deal with this, buying a premium $650 Apple product, but meh... If Apple has this sort of problem, think about the problems other tablet-selling companies have... Yikes

Make of these what you will. In regular use i don't notice anything and it is the second best iPad display i've ever come across after the iPad 2. But once a while i notice something off about the screen. Then again maybe its just in my head. The frequent crashes don't help either.

I'm thinking of returning mine but the fact that i got a huge $130 off the retail price is holding me back cos i know i won't get such a discount again. The alternative is to seek an exchange with Apple but i absolutely despise calling them for any support.

Waiting for the mini is seeming to be a waste of time now too given the production issues. I'm reminded of the cluster F that was the iPad 3 launch when Sharp and LG were once again primary suppliers.

Hmm...what to do.

Stop taking pictures of your iPad screen with a camera. Most of the time, the camera will change the white balance in a picture than what you actually see. Only way to check is to physically look at your screen in person.

Decides to try one more time a and bought a 3rd iPad Air this evening. Worst one yet; piss yellow on left and perfectly white on right. Looks terrible.

As I mentioned in another thread, I've gone through several already. Every single one had the yellow tint. Every single one. I'm going to give it a few days an see if I can live with it, otherwise it's going back. I'm not holding out too much hope for the mini given all the talk about low manufacturing yields for the screen.

I've tested a lot of colors as backgrounds and the one that really shows the Air's weak points is this...

Well I can offically say my replacement iPad is golden. :D (and not as in part of the screen is gold!)

I'd keep it. This nagging feeling you got about the screen, it will go away if you can't see anything in normal use. Just give it a week and stop reading this thread! haha.

Got my Air this weekend and it has the dim left side. Not sure it warrants a return as it is barely noticeable but after spending $800 it's a little annoying.

Mine also has a slightly dimmer left side (when portrait) which gives white pages a book spine type effect, and also a slightly pink bottom side (when portrait).

I was going to live with it but when you're paying £400+ it's a bit annoying - so I think I'll return it to John Lewis. I'll either swap it for another one and see what its like, or get a refund and buy again in a months time and hopefully get one from a different batch. They are using less LEDs on the screen now though so hopefully they're not all like this!

Is it right along the left edge of the display, where the screen meets the border?

This is how mine is, I plan to do an exchange, but am worried I'll get one with the egregious yellowing... :(

Yep in portrait it starts along the left side and goes out about 1/2 an inch. It's most noticeable for me in emails or web pages with content indented from the left.

I'm finding it hard to believe that this wasn't caught by Apple QC.

Yellowing effect

I had and still have the yellowing effect with my iPad. I left it on a white screen all night in a drawer with brightness on high. It seems to have helped a little, but as I type this with a split keyboard in portrait mode, the left portion if the keyboard is obviously more yellow then the white right side. Oh well, it was worth a try and it's going back tomorrow.

The most obvious way to tell if it's still a problem for me is flipping it upside down. I showed my mom yesterday and in normal portrait mode she didn't see a problem, but when I flipped it with the home button on top, she saw it.

Just adding some thoughts to the discussion.
