I had and still have the yellowing effect with my iPad. I left it on a white screen all night in a drawer with brightness on high. It seems to have helped a little, but as I type this with a split keyboard in portrait mode, the left portion if the keyboard is obviously more yellow then the white right side. Oh well, it was worth a try and it's going back tomorrow.

The most obvious way to tell if it's still a problem for me is flipping it upside down. I showed my mom yesterday and in normal portrait mode she didn't see a problem, but when I flipped it with the home button on top, she saw it.

Just adding some thoughts to the discussion.

It wont help at all, its an issue with hardware, leaving the screen on full brightness overnight is likely to cause more problems than it resolves.

I figured, but it was worth a shot. Again, it's going back tomorrow.

When you refer to a grey line running along the left border of the screen what do you mean specifically? Is it like, a clear line or the screen next to the border is slightly less bright?

I think I can see it on mine, but I'm not sure if I'm being to picky as until now it hasn't troubled me before.

Its a line in the screen from top to bottom that is less bright than the rest.

It's easier to notice if you start in portrait and then turn the iPad upside down. You get the same portrait view but with the sides of the screen reversed.

23 pages worth of delusion as some would have us believe :)

I have sent mine back now due to the issue, very disappointed to see it go and hope to buy again if the problem resolves.

If you can't see it, don't go looking for it. The issues on the iPads I've had are significant enough to be seen with one glance. Anything more minor than that and I wouldn't go looking for problems.

I've just returned from my local PC World, where on display they had the holy grail..... An Air without any display issues. It's true, I tried different brightnesses, different orientations etc etc and the screen was just beautiful in every way.

I wonder if they would sell the display model??

Wasn't my spec, and was black as opposed to the white I have.

Not sure if the lighting in the stores makes a difference, but this was 100% uniform all over. Tried at low brightness, 50% and 100% including split keyboard

How bad is it? My Air is as close to perfect as I've seen after going through 4 and looking through a bunch of display models.. and I've noticed a very slight dim fuzzy line about an inch from the left edge in portrait mode. It's really one of those "now you see it, now you don't" issues, as it's very subtle and you almost have to be looking for it. In fact, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have noticed if it not for this thread. It's not at all return-worthy in my case, as I've seen screens with far worse issues. How significant is the issue? If it's subtle, I might suggest you stick with your screen if it doesn't have any of the other uniformity issues being discussed on this thread.

I will be getting my iPad air in from BH that I ordered a couple days ago. I have not been followed this thread and just want to know what are the common defects I should be looking for?

Yes, yes, I know....if you can't see anything wrong with it right when you open the box then don't look for the defects but I want to know what is wrong with this model? Don't like to "live with a problem"

Thank you!

The screen issues *should* be fairly obvious from what Im reading on this thread. I bought mine last week from BB and I seemed to have gotten a good one because my display is just ducky. Look for: pink/yellow tinting, faint lines running the length of the screen and blotchiness. If you have none of those then I say you are good.

I suspect you will be fine....the large majority of diaplays are just fine ;)

I got the iPad Air 128GB Verizon with serial number DMPLL. It is near perfect. Nothing in mass production is “perfect”. If there is a yellow tint on the left side horizontal, it is maybe 1%. Regarding the “book spine” shadow, same – 1% (if that). I can live with those minor flaws.

Apple support have now put me onto someone who is going to call me back before Friday about getting ANOTHER ipad replacement. Seems like it got elevated to someone else due to me receiving a replacement iPad that had glue all over the bottom of it.

The only clearly visible flaw with my iPad Air was a small stain on the back of the Space Grey finish. Water or glass cleaner did not remove it. I used a dot of toothpaste as a mild abrasive. That got rid of it.

Well I took my Air back due to the screen having uneven backlight and the book spine effect, and got a refund.

Was going to pick up another Air but went into the Apple store and had a go on the Retina Mini, loved it and meant I could afford 32 rather than 16gb.

Best of all the screen is perfect and absolutely uniform! It is slightly less saturated than the Air was but not a massive issue for me, and the added portability and even less weight makes up for it. :)

Returned my third Air today too(first big blue line down the left, then yellow on the left for the next two). Saw the rMini's on display and they did all look uniform and very nice. Undecided on what to do, really don't want to go through all the issues I had with the Air again but an rMini would be cheaper and more portable and would see me through until the next gen Air.

Do wonder why all these problems seem to be on the left hand side.

Mine has gone back to Tesco too due to half of the screen having the yellow tint.

It is obvious when loading up on Safari as that is 95% white.

Not sure what to do now either.

Just got done with my Genius Bar appointment. Showed her my iPad Air screen and she immediately noticed the grey line on the left side of the screen. I was surprised I didn't even need to convince her to see it. Unfortunately, they did not have any replacement iPad Airs on hand so they'll order a new one in for me. I also found one demo iPad Air that had a gorgeously perfect screen, I wouldn't mind actually taking that unit for myself. I have a gut feeling that my replacement would have some sort of defect out of the box :(

On another note, I also got to handle the new retina mini. Upon picking it up, I immediately noticed that the screen colors were less vibrant, somewhat washed. Maybe I'm saying this because I've been accustomed to the iPad Air's screen. Perhaps the retina mini colors are more true, and the Air colors may be over saturated. For now, the only way to tell is to compare them to a color calibrated monitor. Other than that, it's lovely, I've always liked its form factor and additionally portability over the Air.

Just received my mail order Air from BH Photo. No issues. 128G VZW S/N DMPLM...

Congrats on winning the lottery!

Actually the model number isn't important. It happens on both the DMPL and DXDL (or whatever the other one is)... How do I know? Because I've had both and both exhibited the exact same problem.

Doesn't mean one is worse than the other. but it's not exclusive to only the one model number.

Here is come comparison shots of my retina mini with my iPad Air. Judge for yourself.

IMO in some cases the Retina Mini is better looking while others the Air is.
