iPad Air screen defect?

Mine is a DMQLK. Even my mother has noticed that the left hand side is not as bright as the right hand side, possibly with a slight yellow tint. I've come to the conclusion that this is just the effect the back light has and there's not really any point to swapping it unless a genuine fault occurs. I really can't face going through the lottery of trying multiple ones in case I get a worse display, although it did cross my mind to swap my wifi only model for a cellular model, but I don't want to run the risk of being accused of buyer's remorse.

I'm hoping 3rd time lucky, if its still subtle yellow I'll either return or just do a service swap in a few months time.

Good luck :)

I really loved the Air but could not get past the two-tone screen, I tried but it irritated me every-time I used it so returned it. Shame.

What surprised me was that Apple didn't ask me why I was returning it for a refund?! I thought they would have wanted to gather the data from returns. Oh well.

Yep, it makes no sense to not ask for a reason. If the returns are due to dissatisfaction with quality they should log this.

I'm sure someone will chime in that you could lie about the reason but still.....

If I were Apple, I'd want to know why people were returning my products, if only so I know what might need to be fixed when refurbishing them.

Anyone got an opinion on mine? Left hand side is dimmer than right, but not by much. I don't think it's yellow, just not uniform brightness.

I think I'm being overly picky, but tomorrow is my last day to return it.

This is SO disappointing of Apple. Luckily I bought mine at Best Buy and I get 45 days so I am waiting for my 45 days to be up to exchange it for another model in hopes there is a better batch... :/ My second replacement was just as bad... Not sure if I want to exchange it and wait for next year's model at this point. Not looking forward to dealing with this issue and Apple's terrible genius workers again.

The problem is the damn lighting in the Apple Stores. You get them to open up a replacement and it looks great.... Until you get home and half the screen looks like someone has blown cigarette smoke over it for 20 years. Then you look a tool when you take it back the next day.

Looks normal... don't see what you see.

I think it looks fine, but it's always hard to really tell from pics. In the pic it looks good to me.

I don't see any dark shadow (i.e. spin book effect) on the left which is good. Otherwise difficult from a pic to see if the screen is really uneven... I don't see particularly yellow tint.

Did you try to take a picture of the keyboard? Usually with the issue the left side appears more yellow or less bright (e.g. the keys "Q" or the "A") than the opposite ones such the "P" or the "L". Or the numeric key on the left has a different grey from the other one on the right.

Having worked at Apple retail before, that is pretty much their signature answer to secure themselves of not having to exchange an infinite amount of units until you are happy. At the end of the day, it's business and if the business is unjustified, they rather not make your business and make someone else's.

What I don't understand is why you need to go through the hassle of talking to a genius when you can just return within the return policy and buy a new one? There's so many retailers out there that there's literally no way anyone can prevent you from exchanging as many times as you like. The only downside is it will take more time. Sure it sucks. Unfortunately in today's world, if you want something good from Apple you gotta go through a batch and QC it for yourself.

You're right, but after two swaps the online support urged me to go to an Apple store to get it checked out against my better judgement. I did and will never do so again unless it's to replace it later in it's life.
I've got a replacement set up for next week (it seems).

I understand it's a business, but personally I think you got it the wrong way around. As the customer I enter into an agreement in good faith to receive goods advertised. That simply isn't happening and it's not up to me to "accept" it. It's up to Apple to provide goods at a level they lead me to believe they are. Otherwise what you are supporting is basically a con job on the consumer. Obviously there are levels that one must work within and I simply don't see myself as being too critical on this point. Why?

1. I just had my rMBP replaced because of yellow tinting on the bottom left and a splotch of yellow. What did Apple Support tell me? "We have determined your screen is defective and will replace it".

So, on a rMBP it's a defective screen, but on an iPad Air it's "acceptable"? Herein lies the problem. My rMBP screen wasn't as bad as my Air screen, yet Apple had decided themselves that my screen was defective, apologised and not only replaced it, but provided me with compensation.

2. Anybody who argues that a yellow tinted left side screen with a black spine is "normal" is delusional. That is not the normal state of things. And their opinion is dangerous because it's obviously open to manipulation.

I've realised that when it comes to computers, Apple will bend over backwards. When it comes to iDevices... well, good luck. Every Tom, Jurgen and Francis for themselves.

(In Japan you can only get your money back if you buy online, in a store they will replace it for you.)

In my experience, the darker side is warmer, in every iPad Air I've seen. A slight boost of the saturation of your image would indicate this.

The fact that you had to post to ask about it suggests it's not a problem to you.

Sent Me A Case

I bought my iPad on launch day, and after returning multiple iPads, I got one that wasn't so bad. I decided to call AppleCare because I wanted to be compensated for using a product that wasn't 100%.

The thing is, I use my iPad for my show, and it can't afford not to have one. My Air is pretty good, but not totally perfect. I just figured that if I'm having to settle, I should be compensated. Don't get me wrong, I love my Air, but still....

Anyway, Apple sent me a Red Smart Case. It was really nice of them, but I think I deserved it....I had to run back and forth to find a decent iPad....

If anyone else is having this issue and is settling for their iPad, you should see how Apple will compensate you. Maybe that would help ease the pain!

2 iPad Air comparison

Hi guys. I bought 2 128GB Space Gray iPad Airs from Apple. The reason I did this was for a better luck. I will be returning the awful looking one. The other one looks nice and natural. So this is my suggestion, try buying 2 iPads and return the faulty one. What do you think?:)

Being compensated for willingly purchasing a product?! MR never ceases to amaze me.

Zboater, not trying to cause trouble here. You actually own an iPad Air. Do you have any yellow tint or book spine? If not, did you get it on your first try? Do you believe the problems people are having or do you think it's being overplayed? I'm not sure you understand what some of us are going through. It's incredibly frustrating and time consuming and all I want is good enough, not perfect. In fact I reckon most on this board will be happy with good enough.
Anyway, I ask because I think your reply highlights a problem. Maigrais shouldn't have to buy two and feel lucky. He SHOULD be able to walk into an Apple store and just buy one and it should be good enough. So given the circumstances and the widespread problem (people all over the world have been reporting it), I think he's justified in his actions. It's up to Apple to curb this buying behaviour by releasing a product that is less prone to this screen problem.

I think it's not very nice of Apple to sell me 3 iPads all with the same dirty tinted yellow and dark spine.

After returning my first air I decided to purchase two from the next store so I could have slightly better odds at getting a decent screen. Luckily one was great but the other was even worse than my first defective ipad. Still, it sucks that we have to do this.

You can rationalize this behavior all you want, but buying multiple iPads with the express purpose of opening them all up, comparing them, and picking one and returning the others is just a sign of .... weird behavior.

No, he is not justified in his actions and he is abusing Apples return policies. And this is somehow Apples fault? Man, am I glad I'm not in charge of Apples refund policies...

I agree with you Zboater, this whole thing is just outrageous. The thing is. It is a whole new display assembly including a different lighting. The iPad Air is an awesome product, and my philosophy was to act crazy to get some crazy results. In situations like this, being stubborn is the answer!

Wow. Everytime someone posts a comparison pic of two iPad Airs, its hard to believe that two of the same devices have such different screens. As a person who had to go through many rMinis to get a good screen, I completely understand you. Although it may seem like its abusing the refund policy, I really can't find much difference between ordering two and ordering one and then swapping them out at the Apple Store.

Under normal circumstances, I would agree that it would constitute a "near-crazy" behavior to order two of the same devices to just pick the better screen and to return the other, but in this case of the wide-spread defective screen issue for the iPads, I would have to make this an exception. I noticed the issue even before checking the forum and it was precisely the screen issues that led me to registering and using MacRumors.

Although I would say that some people are being really picky about their screens, I believe that the customers are going through a vicious cycle.

1. Opens up and notices a defective screen.
2. Goes online to find people with similar issues
3. Realizes that this is a wide-spread issue, looks for other well-known issues
4. Exchanges / Returns the defective unit
5. Now that the customer/user is fully aware of the variety of well-known issues, he/she goes through the list of screen issues. (Now this step increases the return/exchange rate greatly as now the customers have more to look for)
6. Finds another fault, goes back to step 4 until he/she decides that they can settle for a less-than-perfect screen (with a couple of minor screen defects)

Now, for those who have never been in this cycle before, this is truly a very time-consuming, frustrating experience. They probably could have avoided this issue overall, had Apple kept their Quality Control at high standards.

Also, having a tech-savvy group of online users on a forum on which they can freely discuss defects with their ipads doesn't help either, as people who probably would have gone through exchanging one or two devices at most without the knowledge from this forum, would now have to go through many more after reading through many threads on MacRumors.

All in all, what people are experiencing is a vicious cycle. Neither should anyone be criticized for their behaviors nor should they be applauded for their behavior; their behavior was, to a degree, caused by the low QC by Apple. It was the threads at MacRumors that fueled their returns/exchanges.
