Seriously, I don't care what they call it. Just get it into my hot little hands already. ;)
As far as I'm concerned, I got over it when they stuck with the silly "iPad" name instead of something James Bond cool.

I don't mind it at all. They're just emphasizing the first major form shift in five generations. And setting up nicely for a Pro, if they choose to go for it.

I don't know what the point of this thread is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the name iPad Air. In fact I think it sounds really great and signifies the reduction in size and weight of it.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. :p I mean they could have named it iPad 3, or iPad 4, or whatever they wanted, because as you do imply, there really isn't a definite numbering naming scheme past the iPad 2. My original point really was why not give it a number instead of calling it "Air"?

However, after reading a 9to5mac article about it, I understand it a little better because it does help to differentiate and distinguish between the two sizes. I guess my only gripe here is the actual name "Air", because they are both similarly thin so to me it doesn't make too much sense.

It's more of a fundamental marketing snafu... in 1990, this was the new "Toshiba UltraLight"...

You quickly make your product legacy when you use product names like that...

Bad marketing.

AIR always seems like WIND which is broken. Almost everything with an "air" label brings to mind that people only talk about air when it is putrid or disturbing, or mentioning freshness of air after being stuck in stink.

Many of you have commented as well as many have put up their/your vote on the poll... Appreciate your comments.

My reasoning for question Apple on this is - because, at one point or another, the lose of Steve Jobs will shine through at Apple. Cream only rises to the top, and if there is no cream... then nothing rises, just the sugar falls and disappears. And, I never believe it was so @ Apple till now to be honest - Steve Jobs is gone. The Marketing is gone... and the long term vision is gone. This was a short to mid-term Marketing stance, and it stinks - the iPad Pro or HD is obviously coming.

Everything Tim Cook & Jony Ive are doing is great, till the naming of this product. I will get to my point a little later, for now, I want you all to know that I am starting this thread because as someone who believes in Marketing 101 as a Marketing Director myself - this is Apple taking the wrong direction. Only thing good there doing is - piggybanking on their "Air" name being very strong. The "Airs" have killed it nonetheless in the past 3-4yrs. Personally, I bought my first & only MacBook Air because the damn thing could go in Sleep Mode for a month... yes a freaking month. I travel a lot for work on flights/trains/etc, so this was a no brainer for me. The Air was 100% a game changer for portability of laptops... they changed the market. The Air is/was an amazing name & product for the new push of innovations for a laptop.

The obvious, is that they are clearing room for a larger iPad. To make their highest end iPad/tablet be called their "air" is confusing to the loyal Apple enthusiast who has seen "Air" mean a shift to Flash storage instead of HDs on a laptop. And, a legit upgrade in battery life as well since the huge utility for portability. The iPad Air does not brand this at all... this is not an "Air" product from Apple.

- A tablet should be portable altogether, no questions asked - it's the reason why netbooks never populated and the tablet market was a market opportunity in itself. Calling a iPad/tablet an "Air" model gives no justice. Calling a MacBook/labtop an "Air" model is/was a 'wow' effect, and Apple branded the MacBook Air perfectly. Now, they are just copying the "Air" good name to date, when in the mid to long term, they are just tarnishing the "Air" brand by totally confusing the consumer & market.

The 'Air' name will be tarnished in due time... trust me. They have confused their audience. This is only good for the short-term.

(Steve Jobs really is fn gone!!!)

It's just a name, c'mon people

it's not even etched on the device for gods sake

who cares if it's even called the " Ipad Potato "

the name doesn't in any way affect how the device functions.

Bad name! Should have stuck with iPad or iPad 5. iPad Air makes it seem like it is the lightest of all iPads, however the mini is obviously lighter

Is it the best name? No. At the end of the day does it really matter what it's called? It could be named the iPad Unicorn and id still get it because it's a great product not understanding all the butt hurt and rage over a simple name

What a wierd thread. Obviously it made no sense last year, but now that we have the iPad Pro, we know that the iPad Air was given it's name because the Pro version was coming all along.

Oh i'm from the future, and i've already said too much... how can I delete delete this post?

It's just too stupid and inconsistent.

The MacBook Air is their lower end Macbook. Yet the iPad Air is the their most powerful iPad. It doesn't make any sense.

Maybe this is a hint of a touchscreen MacBook Pro which runs both iOS and Mac OS X and they didn't want to confuse people...

I doubt the existence of the so called 12" iPad Pro.

Some people already migrating to 7.9" since they think 9.7" is not so convenient to hold. Why would Apple make a 12"? What's the purpose of MBA 11" and 13"?

If there isn't a marketing campaign by Apple real soon to make the consumer understand the "Air" brand, or the direction Apple is going... then I really, for the first time, believe Apple has let the vision of Steve go. The Marketing has taken a hit... and in due time, Apple will ultimately fall behind from a hiccup in marketing. Steve's Marketing Team is gone. I have never believed this to be true till yesterday as I am loyal Apple enthusiast and have the most utmost respect for an individual who wants to change things for the better like Steve.

Some of you can claim a 'name' means nothing... but, you same people, might want to understand how a lot of Apple names got their names in the first place. Same people might want to understand Marketing 101 in the first place. Sometimes they(Apple) make mistakes, and most of the time... they are spot on, and in general, it lines up with their entire lineup when creating distinguished names or transferring a sub-name to another product class. The technology advances are awesome for the iPad Air, but the 'name' confuses the Apple consumer, and in short, sparks a new name to the overall massive market.

I hope Apple isn't shifting their stance in the market... And, I believe it not so, because I believe the next (larger) tablet will be a shift to a higher end tablet with more functionality. Apple has to have some plans on a larger device with this name relinquishing itself. And, maybe in fact, it is called the iPad Pro, and it debuts after the holidays sometime in the 1st quarter.

2 Things better happen from this "iPad Air":

1 - Apple better make something bigger than the iPad Air like a Pro... even though I think both the 'Air' & 'Pro' name @Apple will be tarnished in due time.

2 - Apple better create a new campaign for the Air brand. If they don't, then they are just piggybacking of a good name when in due time it will hurt branding.

Altogether, I don't think Apple took 2 steps back in Marketing... I think they took 3 steps back. The functionality & the actual device have gotten better, but the marketing has subsided for now.

They better release some big kick@ss Pro/whatever tablet soon... or this makes no sense. Absolutely none.

(Keep it Sexy Simple Apple Marketing... don't forget it.)

The iPad line has had the strangest of all naming schemes, so I wasn't in the slightest bit surprised Apple had named the new one something weird again. Would you prefer a repeat of "The New iPad" debacle?

Even the iPod eventually got renamed iPod Classic. This is just Apple differentiating the models.
