Upgrade, trust me. I've been using MBP with M1 and Mac Mini with M1, both maxed out at 16 GB RAM and I can't go more than 2-3 days without being told I am out of system memory and apps (even M1-optimized apps) being forced closed. I'm not talking about it prompting me to close apps (though that happens), I'm talking about coming back to the computer an hour or two later and discovering half the apps I had open/running no longer open/running. I've lost work as a result of this if the system is unable to recover, as is often the case if app doesn't have cloud-saving built-in.
Thank you for your advice. Your description of the struggles of insufficient ram does bring me back to the first time I purchased a mac 10 years ago and struggled with the standard ram configuration. Looks like i'll double the ram to 32gb then. It'll cost a pretty penny but hope to last another 6 years on this mbp.

P.s. it's not even been 30 mins and it's already OOS in my little city of Singapore

ure you get my point in my argument. Yes, we pay a **** load of tax in Sweden, but we have free healthcare, school and university.
Haha, that’s like saying “My tumour didn’t cost me a dime”…

While the person across the street had to have open brain surgery for 200,000 USD.

Don’t be silly. I am pretty sure you get my point in my argument. Yes, we pay a **** load of tax in Sweden, but we have free healthcare, school and university.

A part of the sales tax on a new MacBook Pro goes to that.

My free university degree laid the foundation of getting me the job that allows me to afford that MacBook.
Its not "free" you pay high income taxes, sales taxes, etc. The Americans who complain about wanting those benefits expect somebody else to pay for them. Remember, in the US over 50% of the population pays ZERO income tax or actually gets money from the income tax system.

My biggest questions are:

Is there any difference in single core processor speed from M1Pro to Max?
What are the physical dimensions? I would like my new laptop to be as similar to 2018 15" MBP as possible.

I'm just annoyed that like I predicted (and others) that giving people HDMI/SD card readers and such, meant we were going to lose a TB port in the process.

As many times as I've used all 4 ports on my 16", this is going to be a pass for me. Was really hoping for one of these amazing chips in the Mini, but I guess I'll get to wait more.

The think about USB4/TB4 is you can "hub" them. You cant really "hub" TB3 - so you are not loosing much. Apart from that on the 16" each side is ONE TB port - so in reality you really only have 2 x TB3 ports with 4 connectors. So TB4/USB4 upgrade is actually a big upgrade.

16gb RAM or fork out for 32gb RAM??

Ok so I wouldn't call myself a 'Pro' user but just a uni student who just wants the 16inch MacBook Pro for the screen real estate. I do spend a lot of time away from a desktop setup and will definitely appreciate the extra space. Currently own a 2015 MBP 13inch 8gb RAM. Question is do I get the baseline 16inch with 16gb RAM or fork out for the 32gb RAM? I am finding currently that with many PDFs and browser tabs open along with some 3D anatomy apps the laptop struggles. Will the 32gb give me more longevity?

Is the new 140W power adapter the same one that comes with the iMac? You know - the one with the built-in Ethernet port…

See my comment above, I'd highlyt recommend upgrading this. I am going with the base M1 Pro CPU config and putting money towards 32 GB RAM. I don't do any video editing, very irregular, but light work in some Adobe Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator. If you browser a lot with many tabs open (especially in Chrome), and might have a few larger Excel files open, and a couple of other programs, you'll quickly find yourself near limits - at least that has been my experience with M1 and 16 GB RAM. It's possible the added processing power in M1 Pro takes off some of that load and stretches it further, but I'd still lean towards the upgrade because there is no such thing as too much RAM - if it's there then apps will take advantage of it.

If you plan to keep the laptop for 4+ years I would!

That was an awful buying experience -- The website kept timing out and by the time it let me through, my date moved from next week to into November. I was hoping for an updated Mac mini, but opted for the 14". I would have totally gotten the Mini if they had released it today, but I am guessing they are going to keep the mini as a cheap option and do some kind of compact pro thing later next year, and it's not ready.

Minor detail ... site not presenting total $$ or a way to actually buy the computer. Oh, well, I guess I"ll have a cheers! 🍸😹

Around 3 years after the iPad Pro (3th gen), still no FaceID for the MacBook Pro (1999$).
Windows has its own Face unlocking system (Windows Hello) since 2015.

In my opinion, very disappointing for a company such Apple.
just because windows has that hello thing, doesn't mean it works very well. I am speaking for my wife here and sure other people may have better experiences than she does but it has a 60% success rate I'd be surprised because most of the time she is having to log in by her PIN

Got 29th for a quite maxed out configuration
Mine shows the 26th with the 16" with the M1 Max. Pretty much maxed out as you said yours was. I did however choose the 1tb of storage. Best of luck with your new laptop.

I find Windows Hello works very well, although it sometimes gets confused if I decide to grow a beard.

thanks - enjoy yours too

While I appreciate that the new design does have some throwback to the very first MacBook Pro I ever owned... I honestly don't like the design and especially don't like the lack of a Touch Bar.

Glad I got my 13 when I did.

Now when they stuff all that performance into the Mac Mini, that's a different story all together.
touchbar (autocorrect turned that into touchback - so Apple has really turned the page) has some merits, but don‘t expect a lot of support in the future
