I get the Airpods and Airpods Pro because they have been out for a while now but the Airpods Max that just came out not supporting it is kinda a shot in the foot for all the early adopters who purchased a pair. Surely Apple knew Lossless was coming out when they were designing the Max headsets and should of included it for a $550 pair of headphones!
Spotify would never do this to their customers. Shameful on Apple’s greedy ass!

Sounds like lossless was a last minute addition to Apple Music probably because of of Spotify about to release their lossless service too. It makes no sense they would design AirPod Max with no lossless support in mind.

From a pure marketing point of view, no - but in reality, it doesn't matter.

Spacial will probably be cool if artists use it and this an added feature that costs no extra so whatever, the people with the setup for this who care about lossless will like it, but to me this is just another tick in the cons list for shelling out half a grand for airpods max. I’m still so confused as to what their thinking was with those. 😂

you can listen to it wired or through good speakers.
so does AirPods Max wired work with it? Strange that Apple announced it and none of their headphone offerings doesn't support it. Maybe AirPods Pro Max on the way?

Man the last time I saw good initial news deflate this fast it was when Pokémon Sword and Shield were revealed to a lot of fanfare, but then Nintendo confirming more than half of the existing Pokémon would not be able to be imported into the games. And the rest was history from there.

Can’t wait to listen to lossless on my 12 year old mac pro and 30 year old Sony MDR-7506 headphones

Actually LDAC is a thing, and it supports up to 32bit. On bluetooth.

It tops out at 900kbps bandwidth though, the bit rate is irrelevant. A lot of ALAC files are over 1000kbps and that's without the conversion required to use this lossy format.

WOW! thats gotta hurt. Spend $550 for headphones and they don't even support the new HI FI streaming.

OUCH

Almost as bad as spending $6500 Plus on a Mac Pro 7.1 only to find out in 2 years Intel Processor support will be dropped.
good chance to get a cheap second-hand Max. I don't care about HiFi

I'll show you plenty that don't have an arrogant CEO making statements like "we love our customers".
Show me a CEO that, when asked “Do you love your customers” the answer isn’t an unequivocal “yes”, and I’ll show you a CEO that doesn’t want to be a CEO anymore :)

Weird reading the comments here. Don’t understand what there is to be angry about.

Lossless audio is completely pointless if you’re using AirPods. They are not designed for critical home listening. They are convenient, fashionable Bluetooth headphones. Good ones, but that is all they are.

Even if the codec could handle the format, they would still be pointless for listening to high bitrate audio. Any sound difference would be placebo or perhaps a difference in EQ. Nothing more.

Apple are not insisting you use their headphone range for this feature.

EDIT: anyone stumbling across this, have a look at this: https://www.zorloo.com
I use one of these with my Meze headphones and it's superb.

This is a major fail, does anyone know if it's technically possible that Apple could bring Lossless on AirPods via firmware update? I see a lot of people saying Bluetooth doesn't support Lossless and a lot of people saying ALAC could technically run over Bluetooth.. Confusing o_O

ALAC probably could technically run over Bluetooth for lower audio resolutions, if Apple really wanted to do it. 16-bit 44.1kHz 2 channel ALAC is somewhere in the neighborhood of 700-900kbps, which is within Bluetooth's capability as far as data rate. The effective range between phone and headphones will be diminished at these higher data rates though. If Apple had one reason for deciding not to enable lossless on AirPods, I would suspect range would be it.

I am guessing AirPods Max will support Lossless via Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Cable, and Hi-Res Lossless when further complemented by external 24-bit 192kHz DAC.
Only if the ADC in the 3.5mm to lightning cable supports those higher sample rates, and only if the DAC in the APM supports those higher sample rates.

OH, if you like that, it’s monthly around here. It would be weekly, but Apple doesn’t release those many things :)

Oh, it’s easy, it appears to be this general rule.

Did Apple put out a press release or release a product AND in the description, did they use the letter “e”.?
Anger ensues.
