It's mostly for people who use high-end speakers or headphones via cable or WiFi (like Sonos). At present no Bluetooth codec can support CD quality or better audio.
Excuse my total ignorance on all this stuff. I'm happy just listening to music from my iPhone to my AirPods. But you mentioned "Sonos". I do have Sonos speakers all over my house and Apple Music subscription. My ignorant question is, will this new music feature benefit the sound coming out of my Sonos speakers? 🥴

I understand why this is not supported on AirPods or AirPods Pro, or even AirPods Max with wireless mode. As it won't make much difference. But why not on AirPods Max wired mode? How can Apple event control this over analog signal? If it's the hardware of AirPods Max, then event an DAC won't make it work.

I'm still just trying to figure out if I will be able to play lossless from my apple TV through my audio system? From what I'm reading I need to purchase a converter for this?? Or is that just for the Hi-Res Lossless option? Will the lossless option be in the Apple TV settings?

Glad I didn’t buy the first version of AirPods Max.
Why? From the article: "It's worth noting that 9to5Mac says that AirPods Max will support Hi-Resolution Lossless when used as wired headphones".

Anything over 48kHz is considered “hi-res” and needs external processing hardware. That wasn't going to be wireless.

I'm not an audiophile, so I won't know the difference between the best codec that bluetooth allows and a wired connection. Maybe I'll notice it via wired CarPlay.

Sounds like lossless was a last minute addition to Apple Music probably because of of Spotify about to release their lossless service too. It makes no sense they would design AirPod Max with no lossless support in mind.
With that I would have to agree.

However, I didn't see any of you complaining about AirPods Max inability to play lossless audio back in January.

It was still a thing then. And still incapable of it.

Well 9to5 is wrong, because it is simply not possible over 3.5mm connector.

“Introducing our new AirPods. Supports Apple Music Lossless. Available today. $150. We think you’re gonna love it.”

this whole stunt is just to shift new headsets.
Except lossless will work with non-Apple wired headphones. If it doesn’t work with a wired AirPod Max then Apple really screwed up when designing them.

Ok, so can someone end the confusion? MR is reporting that AirPods Max won't support hi-res lossless audio, even through the wire, while 9to5Mac is reporting that with the wire, AirPods Max will support hi-res lossless audio.

So which is it?

What about AirPods max being used in wired mode?

From the article:

It's worth noting that 9to5Mac says that AirPods Max will support Hi-Resolution Lossless when used as wired headphones, but it is unclear what equipment is required to make that happen.

So presumably you can listen ton lossless through the lightning wired mode. There is no reason it won't work unless Apple purposefully disables it.

No chance to hear the difference between AAC 256 and Lossless on AirPods Max, let alone AirPods (Pro), anyway. It's hilarious that people here really believe the Airpods Max play in an audiophile league or whatever. Even in a blind test with a Sennheiser HD800S, probably only 1 person out of 100 would have the "golden" ear to be able to guess correctly.
This is just not true, across the spectrum of your music, the difference between lossless and lossy can be quite significant.
Does Tidal high res work with any bluetooth headphones?
They have the same issue as Apple.

Thanks Apple to add some new features except for everyone that buys their headphones that are « deeply integrated with the service »

for real, I get that Bluetooth has limits, but if even wired AirPods Max can’t play lossless files, why Apple is even rolling out this feature?
The Apple TV supports it. Though the benefit of lossless is minimal anyway,

No kidding.

Hilarious that people thought they were going to listen to lossless audio via Bluetooth.
I am not surprised though. I have many friends who luv there Bluetooth Bose speaker that they crank up and exasperate, "Will you listen to that bass? The Bose sounds so beautiful!"

So Amazon is not actually upgrading everyone for free. It is only free for 30 days:

This 30-day free upgrade offer applies only to the Amazon Music HD Individual Plan and Amazon Music HD Family Plan and is available only to current subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited. During the 30-day upgrade trial, you will continue to pay your current plan subscription fee plus applicable taxes, after which your subscription to the Amazon Music HD Individual Plan or the Amazon Music HD Family Plan, as applicable, will automatically continue at the monthly price of $14.99 ($12.99 for Prime members)

All the usual know nothing whining.
You still get spatial audio/Atmos on wireless.
Bluetooth has limits has many others have said. LDAC requires both headphones and device to support it and kind of sucks which is why nobody uses it.
People into high res lossless won’t used wireless anything which apple knows.
There is no reason to assume that absolutely everything apple does works with each and every one of its products. They make too many things for that.
Meanwhile audiophiles are jumping for joy at such a high quality feature without a price increase.
Amazon already dropped their high res prices. Tidal and Qobuz are screwed.
Be glad for what you are getting for no additional prices. Must people don’t use good enough equipment to hear this anyway.
