Well this is kind of BS. So I don't get a pair until mid-January because I happened to work a late shift last night and didn't happen to wake up early enough on some random Tuesday. Screw that, seriously.

I agree, I was working and missed it. As a loyal customer I really don't appreciate that they didn't announce a preorder time AHEAD of the sale so there would be some time for people to find out it will be available like they do with iPhones. Apple continues to disappoint. They are losing touch with their loyal customers and getting a little to big for themselves IMHO.

Yeah it's not great from Apple on this one. Kinda suprised US ship times have slipped already. UK stock still plentiful by the looks of it, still delivers Dec 19. But don't forget - we're paying through the nose for that privilege.

Wouldn’t just as many people be unhappy though, seeing as the actual issue here is that they don’t have enough supply for all the demand?

The only reason I would buy those is for running, and it's not a good idea... for that kind of money I would get a JBL Everest or Syncros (over-ear). Apple don't make good headphones, that design is dull, it's no surprise they charge more for the in-ear model.

I agree. I wanted to buy for my husband for xmas. It's the last week of class, I was up writing until 5am est and just got up an hour ago, no warning, totally missed it. Some kind of email from apple to let us know to be ready would have been nice. But they probably didn't because they knew demand exceeded supply and they didn't want people crashing their site.... still. Annoying. I'll be mad if they do that with the 27" lg.

How do you know that wasn't the case. Clearly there was an issue that caused a protracted delay
Quite a lot of reviewers had demo Airpods since the beginning of November (or thereabouts). None of them have reported the issues mentioned in this report. Also, as much as I remember the source that said they would ship before Christmas also reported that the delay is production related whereas the source that said performance issues (synchronisation) are the reason also reported a delivery in January. Given that they shipping before Christmas now is one indication which of the two sources was the more knowledgeable. Then there is this fast slipping of delivery times which indicates production ramp-up limitations.

You ARE joking....right? Because you can't SERIOUSLY expect Apple to sell these for $20. There are legitimate criticisms that can be leveled against these headphones, but the price is NOT one of them.

I've been waiting for truly wireless earbuds for a while. In all the time that I've looked, I haven't found a SINGLE ONE selling for less than $150. Average-quality earbuds without a dedicated chip or a voice activated assistant or touch controls or a full 5 hours of listening time on a single charge sell for as much or are more expensive than the AirPods. Here are some of the best competitors:

Samsung Gear Icon X--$200
Bragi Dash--$300
Sony Xperia Ear--$200

The closest competitor to the AirPods (in my opinion) are the Xperia Ears. But they cost slightly more, have a shorter battery life, and lack the same degree of integration that Apple has with their ecosystem. Honestly, I'm quite surprised that they seem to have completely nixed the 'Apple tax' on these--or even gone the opposite way. Some people might not like that they're so small and light you could easily loose them, or that they're completely cordless, or find it annoying that they come with a handy charging case....wait, what exactly IS your problem with them?

there are also the Bragi Headphones.. they are the same price as the apple airpods (10$ cheaper actually) we'll see how they work next jan.. ordered a pair to test

Apple's AirPods are now available to order from the company's online store for $159.00, following weeks of speculation on exactly when the wireless headphones would launch. Originally, the AirPods were going to debut in "late October," but Apple delayed the launch for unspecified reasons.

In the official press release, Apple mentioned that the AirPods will begin arriving at Apple retail stores, Apple Authorized Resellers and select carriers beginning sometime next week. Shipment will begin in "limited quantities" at launch, and Apple encourages customers to continue checking its online store for updates on availability and shipping estimates.

Now, users can order the Bluetooth-enabled headphones, which provide up to 5 hours of music playback and high-quality sound through a "seamless and automatic connection" between the AirPods and an iPhone. To charge the AirPods, the included travel case doubles as a charging station that provides up to 24 hours of battery life for the headphones.
The new W1 chip inside the AirPods allows for seamless connection with devices in Apple's ecosystem, so that they connect instantly whenever the rechargeable battery case is flipped open near an iOS device. When in the user's ears, the AirPods "know when you are listening" and will subsequently pause music when they're taken out of an ear. Playback controls are left to Siri-enabled voice commands, which are brought up by double-tapping on the buds.

Included with the AirPods is a Lightning cable used to charge the carrying case, and the headphones require Apple devices running iOS 10, watchOS 3 or macOS Sierra. Buy your own AirPods now at Apple.com for $159.00. Deliveries are currently estimated to begin arriving on December 21 in the United States.

Update 7:16 AM: Delivery estimates in the U.S. have slipped to December 29.

Update 7:30 AM: Delivery estimates in the U.S. have now slipped to "4 weeks."

December 19 delivery still showing in Australia

Hmm. I ordered mine a few hours ago, probably immediately after Macrumors posted the article.
In Hungary - delivery is on 20th of December.
I hope it sticks to that because afterwards I am going home to Romania for Xmas and I would love to start the new year with super expensive Q-tips in my ears.

I like how that airpods picture looks like an angry face!
With Frowny/angry eyebrows and little black dot eyes, and a wide open shouting mouth (the open lid).

I didn't consider that was a pretax price. That's a bit naughty... how can products be marketed in the US without showing the full price?

IIRC It's standard practice in the USA (don't forget that different states have different tax rates) and is the same in bricks and mortar stores (prices on the products are pre-tax): Caused me a bit of a shock the first time I went to America!

Tap-Tap "Volume Up". Tap-Tap "Next song".. My ear might ache with all those double taps. I know battery life would probably be halved, but I think I might want to say "Hey Siri next song" sometimes..

Or... swipe down for volume down, swipe up for volume up, or double tap for next song, triple tap for previous song, and short hold for siri... relying wholly on siri is going to be so annoying who half the time tells me "I'm sorry, I can't do that right now."

I bet! Seems very strange to not really know the price of something until you go and pay for it!
