Seriously? They release them at some random date and time with no notice?

I work afternoons, I was sleeping.

If it were a pre-order I would have set my alarm, or stayed up.

Screw Apple. They are ****ing their customers left and right.

Or... swipe down for volume down, swipe up for volume up, or double tap for next song, triple tap for previous song, and short hold for siri... relying wholly on siri is going to be so annoying who half the time tells me "I'm sorry, I can't do that right now."

A good point... will Siri require a data connection to complete a simple request like "volume up"??

Love the idea and price of these except for the uncertainty as to whether I can pause, fast forward, and rewind without pulling my phone out. If I can do that, I'm in. If not, then these would be inconvenient in many circumstances.

I bet! Seems very strange to not really know the price of something until you go and pay for it!

I mean...we do know that price of it. It's $159 + my state tax. We have calculators here too, so that helps. ;)

Except for giant releases like a new iPhone, this is typical practice (for Apple and most companies). Not everything gets a pre-order.

I agree. I wanted to buy for my husband for xmas. It's the last week of class, I was up writing until 5am est and just got up an hour ago, no warning, totally missed it. Some kind of email from apple to let us know to be ready would have been nice. But they probably didn't because they knew demand exceeded supply and they didn't want people crashing their site.... still. Annoying. I'll be mad if they do that with the 27" lg.
at least you are on EST... its so unfair for us who are on PST... nobody wakes up 6 in the morning just to check the website.. so so so unfair.

True, it's really not all that difficult, especially in my state where the tax rate is just under 10%.

I was actually up at 6:15 but didn't check the internet because I was taking my newborn to her first doctor appointment. I noticed it in between appointments at around 10:30 and ordered, I have a ship date of 1/12/17. I hope they ship substantially earlier than that but I'm not holding my breath. I'll live either way.

They do pop out, and they're very uncomfortable.

You mean, they do pop out for you and are very uncomfortable for you. Clearly, not everyone will conform to the EarPods, but some have adjusted quite well to the design and comfortability, being every fitting is different from others. That said, the EarPods have suited me fine until my Airpods arrive.

If you know anyone in the UK and want to stump up the extra cash they might just be able to send these to you before Christmas, or at least before the Apple US Store

I am also the go to guy for PC repairs but that isn't really relevant to this discussion.

I mentioned that because being so many people's go to person, I knew who had PCs and who eventually stopped using them when they got a smart phone.

The future of offices full of computers on desks are open collaborative spaces where employees are mobile. Wait... scratch that, that's the present.

Many job categories where workers sat at computers all day are changing rapidly. Many of those offices are now couches and meeting tables. Many of those employees are free to go outside, to sit at a cafe meeting colleagues or clients.

Creatives who sat at a desk writing pitches now message one another and work in collaborative apps on their iphones and iPads. They go out and socialize with their peers which is how ideas come about. Realtors who used to manage their listings on a website editor on a computer now snap some shots and upload it to their realtor listing app. They respond to their emails from their car or before a viewing at their listings.

But that's besides the point. What is being discussed here are personal computers. People who used to use computers for email, web browsing, banking, occasional word processing and managing their budget in spreadsheets have since migrated to smartphones which is a true personal computer, dedicated to that one person and their needs.

I don't expect smartphones to disappear but their role as a central place for managing their lives is certainly going to change. It's already changing. Much more personal watches and speech based UI that AirPods are facilitating are going to step in to that personal assistant role.

Not as unfair as when the iphones are released for preorder and I have to wake up at 3 am (EST) instead of staying up to midnight (PST) to order ;)

no correct. iPhone releases are announced. you know exactly when it goes alive, its not a 'surprise attack'.

plus, apple is based on PST.

At this point I think there's a very good chance the ship dates are not correct in the UK and other markets. It seems the dates are only slipping in the US, so I think Apple's systems are busted outside the US.

I don't think so, I just think there are more people in the US that are ordering them.

You are very right and I see the same thing coming. The smartphone will be looked at like the pager and we will someway/how have even more information available to us such as augmented VR. I don't know exactly which direction everything is going but it is clear that voice interaction and wireless everything is the future.

I am almost able to widdle down my devices to my ip7, ipp 9.7 and apple watch. I have an iMac but with how everyone is going the way of the internet, even my graduate program is optimized to be able to use with a touchscreen on an iPad. I can see in another decade or two that desktops won't be around much. I think everyone will have an ultra powered tablet and we will just have docking stations in locations where we need more monitor real-estate.

I used to think docking stations were the way to go. I thought we would just plug our phones into keyboard and monitors. Now I'm not so sure. It may be that all the necessary computing power will be so cheap that even that hassle will be skipped because the docking station will have enough computing power (i.e, it will be a computer). I mean mainly what the masses use computing power for 95% of the time is to display words and pictures on a screen. We really don't need anymore computing power to do that. I mean a $60 smartphone does a perfectly good job showing text, pictures and even video right now. So does a $40 tablet. That is now, so prices will drop from here. I think we might just end up with only Cloud level accounts which we can access from any device. The only thing you will carry will be your master ID device which will be like your Apple Watch.
