This is the first time I've really been burned by them. Because other than iPhone, I've never really been a launch-day buyer. Well, I decided I wanted a PS5 and just nope on launch day - expected. For 2/3 weeks I monitored sites like Best Buy, Gamestop, Walmart, etc.

Walmart got stock in a 9pm I was inputing my card info at 9:01 and then said "sorry, this product is no longer available. No chance in hell humans ordered all stock in less than 1 minute. Then you see people selling it for 4x the price on eBay and I'm like "who buys these?"

So I have money I'm willing to spend on a product sitting in people's home on eBay. Naturally Sony doesn't care as a sale is a sale (unless they return), but I never realized just how toxic the scalper community is.

As a scalper, when I raise prices on things that I sell, it is simply free market. When prices go up for things that I want to buy, it is price gouging :D

It makes no sense to spend the money to design a product, set up manufacturing and a supply chain, invest in marketing, etc and then artificially hold back production.

I realize that doesn't align with the narrative the unhappy are clinging to in order to feel better.
As with most things, I think the truth lies somewhere in between the two extremes we see on the forums.

Apple is probably being very conservative with delivery projections (it is -- after all -- the holiday rush period in the middle of a global pandemic with reduced production and shippers are scrambling to deliver vaccines), and would much rather underpromise and deliver product too early than way too late. That's only good business and what any other company would and should be doing.

That said, I'm sure Apple isn't the slightest unhappy that they're getting all this press about a new product that sold out thru March on day one, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was was an expected if not planned part of their PR strategy.

Reading up on reddit and the word is that these will be a popular hand grab item on the streets. Be careful when wearing in public especially since you will be into your spatial audio and not your surroundings.

This...let me provide you with an example, the delivery of my M1 MBA (16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD):
  • Ordered: 11/21/20
  • Initial estimate after purchasing: 12/16-23
  • Revised estimate: 12/21-29
  • Revised estimate after shipping: 12/14
  • Final delivery: 12/8
So yeah, Apple seems to like to underpromise and over-deliver. I was not expecting my M1 MBA today and yet it showed up!

Yeah, there is no way I am wearing these out in public. Most likely, I will wear these at home when I am at my desk or the office during work. If I am going out and about, these seem too cumbersome to take out of the "Smart Case," and most likely I will resort to earbuds as they are smaller and more discreet.

It's time to stop listening to people whining about not having money, medical expenses or the 1% having it all when $550 headphones are back-ordered for months.

I would think people going bankrupt due to a medical expense and/or people earning minimum wages might not be the same people that are buying these headphones... I don't think everybody in the US is poor or dead poor, also you should still complain for a broken health insurance system, which costs a lot more than $550 for basic stuff, Its not like you should give big pharma and private insurers every bit of your disposable income, otherwise you loose the right to complain now, should you?

Apple today introduced new wireless over-ear headphones called AirPods Max, and delivery estimates have already slipped into 2021 on Apple.com.

airpods-max-blue.jpg

AirPods Max in all five color options, including space gray, silver, green, sky blue, and pink, are now estimated for delivery in 12-14 weeks. While the estimates could change at any time, this means the AirPods Max are currently backordered until March. (Oddly enough, faster shipping remains available with engraving, while supplies last.)

AirPods Max feature a meshed headband with a stainless steel frame that connects to memory foam ear cups. Apple says the headband is designed to distribute weight and reduce on-head pressure. Like the Apple Watch, the AirPods Max have a Digital Crown for volume control, audio playback, answering or ending phone calls, and activating Siri. There is also a noise control button for switching between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode.

AirPods Max feature a 40-mm Apple-designed dynamic driver that is said to provide "rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension." Each ear cup is equipped with Apple's H1 chip for "computational audio" to deliver the "highest quality listening experience possible," according to Apple.

AirPods Max feature up to 20 hours of battery life with Active Noise Cancellation and spatial audio enabled, and a five-minute charge delivers 1.5 hours of listening time.

For more details about AirPods Max, read our announcement coverage. For those who have already ordered, there is a running forum thread to discuss your AirPods Max pre-orders.

I got a pair from Best Buy... Im hoping they will actually get here on the 15th. Anyone know if that is unlikely to be the case?

Enjoy your new M1 MBA! What an awesome machine!

This makes for a good case for having a pair of headphones tied to your Apple ID, just like your iPhone. Try to pair them to a new device and you'd need to authenticate via you Apple ID. Would also facilitate returning lost headphones. I hope someone is already working on it in Cupertino.

No plans to buy any, but I never understood the need to rag on what someone else spends their money on, especially an Apple product on an Apple blog. There are plenty of Apple products that aren't for me, but that doesn't mean anyone else who buys them is a sucker.

Honestly, I'm happy for anyone who can get a new product that excites them on a good day. And after this year of hell, a new premium product can really brighten up your life and who can hate on that?

Actually I spoke too soon !! I just saw there is no cable connectivity ! I can't believe this... Well, they are definitely NOT targeted to audiophiles indeed.
Huh? How on earth can you connect it to in-flight entertainment then? They should know a huge market for any noise cancelling over-ear cans is the frequent long haul traveler. There's gotta be a way to plug it in somehow.

many if not most bring their own entertainment... I can’t remember the last time I plugged headphones in. a lot of the airlines use Bluetooth to connect to your phone and headset. It’s a wireless world. But I admit does seem strange they omit it. Not like I’m going swimming with it

I'm guessing/hoping that either a) there's a lightning to 3.5mm cord in the works or b) we'll be able to use the existing 3.5mm to lightning dongle and just attach a normal 3.5mm-3.5mm male-male cord to it.

On short-to-medium flights, I couldn't care less, but during a normal (non-COVID) year, I'll take 8-10 flights that are 10-14+ hours long. Using IFE for those flights is a must (and the primary reason I buy noise-cancelling headphones)

‘yep my bad, there is a dongle. But even flying half way around the world I prefer my iPad to IFE. I just watch the map on that. About 6 times a year , 14 hours to Tokyo. IFE is edited too much for my tastes

How do you position your iPad? I’d love to do this but always get a crick in my neck looking down. Is there a way to set it up so it’s eye-level?

There are many people who have high paying jobs and excess funds at their disposal and who are Apple fans, these buyers makes it profitable for Apple. US$550 ($900 here) is nothing to them, a days work if not much less.

That's what I'm waiting to find out. I love music as a hobby that brings me a lot of joy. I like AirPods for on the go and if these can match my Sennheiser HD6XX in sound quality (granted open back vs closed back) then I'll strongly consider this for a wireless alternative.

I feel like this product is about $100 overpriced, but what has Apple done lately that isn't overpriced? I'm not overly bothered by it. I make money to make me happy. If I see value to it for me, then I'll spend. For now I'll wait for reviews from audio sites, not necessarily the Verge or what not.
The M1 Macs surely are not overpriced for their performance.

Apple has one of the biggest/greatest marketing programs in the business world. They don't need to generate buzz by artificially creating demand for new products. Every new product they introduce will be scrutinized on the front page of every news site, reviewed by every tech critic, and advertised until ubiquitous.

I've spent thousands of pounds on a number of audiophile grade headphones from Sennheiser and Grado paired to esoteric Graham Slee dedicated amps.
The sad thing is that human sense of hearing decayes with age, I cannot enjoy that equipment as much as I used to...

Not a fan of the look - pretty hideous, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And it's Apple, so they'll sell.
At that price I expect you will really be able to appreciate the subtle nuances of compressed mp3s streamed over bluetooth!

In fairness, my attorney bro makes $180,000/year and even he was like "wait, wtf... no way."

Absolutely, $550 is basically a day's pre-tax earnings on $130k/yr, so we're not exactly talking high-rolling celebrities at this point.

Not only that, but think of how much money people spend on truly disposable 'experiences' (dining out at nice restaurants, vacations, sporting events, etc) and then consider that some people use headphones every single day, for hours. If you amortize out an expense like this over the many years you're likely to use them, $550 becomes pennies per day. It's really not nearly as insane for a high-quality product as some are making it out to be here...

Arificially creating demand is a horrible idea too. Want to get cool AirPods Max but need to wait for March? Well you can get Sony or Bose that compete with them and you can get it NOW.

You have to be a real serious fanboy to wait months instead of just going for a different product. For example, if the PS5 was out of stock until March, but I know the Xbox could be in stock in January, I would get the Xbox instead of PS5.

I am getting either the latest NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards, whichever is in stock first.

I am placing an order for these headphones, because I still have a Sennheiser wireless headphones I got 5 years ago, and they still work fine. So I can wait the extra time.

But it is really not good business sense to "artificially" inflate the demand by producing not enough products "intentionally". Potential customers will get your competitors products instead.
