Yeah it has NOTHING to due with literally EVERYTHING being short on stock/supply chain issues due to COVID. It is only to build up hype right?
Because Apple has not literally done this with every product launch since Steve Jobs returned....
Your point is valid, but I wouldn't credit the pandemic too much. They'd have done it anyway. It's sort of marketing 101....

Here's my guess. They will sound better than the Sony's. They will of course not sound as good as high end wired headphones ($600+). But Think considering how many people listen to music through Spotify these days, these kind of are peek. Like if you subscribe to Tidal you probably have a dedicated device and headphones for listening. These aren't for everybody or most people, but for peek iPhone ease of use and quality these look good and will sell well for what they are. The sport version in 6 months for $299 or $399? those will sell even better.

No, they simply announced the product before they've had a chance to ramp up production. There are no warehouses full of them that Apple is sitting on. That's the marketing part of it. They wanted to get the word out before Christmas, even though they knew they wouldn't be able to fulfill demand. They took a problem - not having a product ready in time for the holidays - and turned it into a marketing campaign to give the appearance of high demand.

And I still have my money in my wallet, that Apple would otherwise have locked in today. And 3-4 months to think about if I should purchase one. Or not. How's the working out for Apple?

So... now you're saying now it will take 3-4 months for Apple to ramp up production beyond Apple's expectations for the blue model.

I'm sure you have have evidence you can point to with a link corroborating your assertion. So please post it. Otherwise you're just making stuff up.

Man...I've been waiting for these to come out for a month now, and this morning, I happen to be busy with work, so by the time I found out about this through a co-worker, order deliveries were set to the 31st. I've noticed with the latest releases of products, that Apple Stores are getting daily shipments of stock from the Homepod Mini to the M1 Macs, while online order for shipping are out weeks or even months.
So I'll probably just wake up early on the 15th, and order on the app for local store pickup. It'll probably be hard to pickup the different colored versions, but I'm sure stores will be stocked regularly with Space Gray and Silver.

Apple would love to tell you a $550 pair of headphones but they can't take your money for a product they don't have to ship you. That's all the evidence you should need.

This has not always been the case. I am not someone that stays up all night and visits the website the second a product is released, yet I can still get these products quickly.

Don’t want to wait 14 weeks for one? You can get one on eBay now for only $5000 + S&H

All this consternation about the price is really strange. Don't buy it! Ignore it!

Best Buy is now sold out of the sky blue color. I ordered my sky blue cans a couple of hours ago. I have until Jan. 16 to return it if I don’t like something about it like it’s uncomfortable, especially for several hours of use.

Given that people cannot go to trips now, all of those disposable income has to go somewhere, everything from gaming consoles to phones to accessories to headphones are being grabbed like they are free. Don't underestimate rich or even middle-class people.

Plus wait for it to hit a few massive sales in the process! :)

So funny! That's hardly proof of of the RUSE you originally claimed that Apple engaged in:

"They don't have to hold back production for the ruse to work - they only have to give the false appearance of demand and/or scarcity for a short period of time to arouse FOMO interest, then open the full spigots full bore once that goal has been accomplished. It's guerrilla marketing."

The "smart case" looks ridiculous, I must admit.

They look like great headphones, but they badly need a wired connection.

Like the PS5 which I know all too well.

I think it depends how good the sound really is I think a lot of people would pay good money for great sound
That's what I'm waiting to find out. I love music as a hobby that brings me a lot of joy. I like AirPods for on the go and if these can match my Sennheiser HD6XX in sound quality (granted open back vs closed back) then I'll strongly consider this for a wireless alternative.

I feel like this product is about $100 overpriced, but what has Apple done lately that isn't overpriced? I'm not overly bothered by it. I make money to make me happy. If I see value to it for me, then I'll spend. For now I'll wait for reviews from audio sites, not necessarily the Verge or what not.

This holiday season should be forever dubbed "the scalper season" because scalpers are making $$$. Whether it be the Series S, PS 5, the RTX 3080/3090 GPUs, or now, these headphones, scalpers are going crazy!!!

This is the first time I've really been burned by them. Because other than iPhone, I've never really been a launch-day buyer. Well, I decided I wanted a PS5 and just nope on launch day - expected. For 2/3 weeks I monitored sites like Best Buy, Gamestop, Walmart, etc.

Walmart got stock in a 9pm I was inputing my card info at 9:01 and then said "sorry, this product is no longer available. No chance in hell humans ordered all stock in less than 1 minute. Then you see people selling it for 4x the price on eBay and I'm like "who buys these?"

So I have money I'm willing to spend on a product sitting in people's home on eBay. Naturally Sony doesn't care as a sale is a sale (unless they return), but I never realized just how toxic the scalper community is.
