I'm following these reviews pretty carefully. I've got a pair due to be delivered around 12/31, but I'm definitely feeling some ambivalence about the $600 (after tax) pricetag. I guess I can also just take a week to evaluate them in person and return them if they don't live up to the price...
Headphones for that price must have a 3.5 headphone jack cable. It had happened to me in many occasions that for some reason I forgot to charge the bluetooth headphones and that was a big problem specially during long trips, to solve that problem I bought the Sennheiser with Bluetooth that also work with a headphone jack cable.

And then compressed down to lossy AAC again for Apple Music ;)

Even a lossless AIFF is going to be re-compressed to AAC for bluetooth streaming.

Correct. Even though currently the AAC stream in Apple Music is recompressed again to AAC for bluetooth transmission. It would be nice if the Airpods Max were capable of passing trough the AAC stream untouched.

Erfon Elijah says in his first impressions youtube video that they will connect to Apple devices using Airplay, which is absolutely nonsense, particularly battery wise. Do your research, people, for god´s sake!

i cant understand why apple tagged 550USD for Airpods Max ?
Right now, market leader Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones cost 350USD, and apple has charged 200USD more but on what basis. I don't think the feature of spatial audio justifies 550USD price, Apple has really lost their minds

Simple. They already have a very good selling $350 headphone...Beats Studio3 (and will release a 4 when they want). So why make a headphone that competes with one you ALREADY have? Thats bad business, and Apple usually doesnt make bad business moves. So this headphone ISNT designed to compete with $350 headphones...maybe look at the $500 headphone market...THATS the competition.

Does the $350 headphone do Spatial Audio? Have 7 microphones analyzing the sound and adjusting the frequency based on the source material, the fit on your ears, and the environment to offer the same sonic experience regardless of source material or the environment or placement of the headphones? There are LOTS of things the $350 headphones on the market wont do that these headphones will....Now if you dont need or want those features, then buy the Beats...at $350.

Oh and these are some of the Airpods Max competitors....I guarantee it will outselll all of them combined.

Yeah that was a miss for me on these - aside from the price - not having a 3.5mm plug to use when there is no battery available. And no mention yet of using the Lightning to Lightning connection to listen wired.

The ones above use wired because bluetooth doesn't cut it, and B&O below are a fashion statement. Their TV's are just guts from other manufactures.

Ohhhh, very interesting. So you CAN use it hardwired...
Big question though on the 3.5mm is whether it bypasses the DSP altogether.

If not, is there a significant delay which would make it useless for FPS gaming / realtime audio use e.g. monitoring / Dj'ing.

He used them for several hours and the vibe I got was, they're on par with other top models or slightly better, but he doesn't think it's worth double the price.
That's what I got as well, good enough product but not worth the price. I have to listen to them to decide, I only care about the sound and I don't care about the extra bells and whistles, if they are comfortable, and if they can be used with a 3.5 headphone jack cable, and have better sound than Bose, Sennheiser and Sony ($300 to $400 market) I might buy the AirPods Max.

Pretty sure that they've said it doesn't support usb-audio, so it shouldn't work.

I guess someone could rig up an adapter with a power input and a 3.5mm plug input (or a usb/lightning input with DAC), and a lightning output to plug into the cans. Guessing we'll see a bunch of options, if such things don't already exist.

The headphones seem fine to me. It’s just the case that is a total fail. I’m not walking around with a handbag I’m stuffing them in my bag. I just don’t understand how they went to market with that.

But note, it is not a traditional all analog path. The cable has ADC so the headphones get digital as it will only accept digital over Lightning. Similarly, you can use it "wired" with the USB-C to Lightning cable that comes in the box but that then is an all digital path via USB. In effect, you have two wired options, one for an analog audio source and one USB. However, you don't get a full analog path to the drivers unlike with traditional headphones.

Ok...but people plugging in with a wire is going to be the extreme minority in the first place.

So we’re supposed to be up in arms over a subset *of a subset* of users?

You can’t bring this down to “average users” and ignore that it’s qqan extreme minority of them that will ever even want to plug in their *wireless* headphones.

It's an over $500 headphone, should be like everything else in it's price class and come with the jack as users traditionally spending this amount of money also listen to much higher quality than 256kbps AAC over Bluetooth. Adding an a ****** $5 dongle, to your potentially thousands of dollars set up should not be required.

But let's be fair, you're right. This is a Giffen good, not aimed at people buying headphones for more than $500 rather at people buying for $200-$300 but so much love with Apple stuff that they can justify the price ;)

What? USB-C to Lightning should work and 3.5mm to Lightning is advertised to work. Apple sells that cable and calls out support for AirPods Max explicitly. See links elsewhere in thread or find on apple.com.

My fear is without that "handbag" you will scratch the cans like crazy when jostled about in a bag. Let's hope that's not the case (pun intended).

I ordered a pair the moment I saw that they are announced. I’m getting next week but I’m really skeptical that they are going to do anything more for me than the AirPods Pro. Those for me are perfect for working in the yard with ANC. Spatial audio is already available on both.

Longer time to listen to audio before recharging is about it. But I’ll wait till next for the final judgement.
I mean I’ve got Beats Solo3s and I rarely use them. Maybe because they are heavy, obtrusive, and funky to control.

I’m curious though because I haven’t seen this anywhere. There’s no “Hey Siri” option, correct?

Gotta wake her with the push of the crown?

It's entirely possible I missed this detail in the countless complaints about price (I get it) and the case (this is probably the worst thing about these) but is there any kind of charge indicator on the actual headphones themselves? The Bose set I've been using has a light set up on the side indicating charge levels when charging. They also have an indicator on the outside that they are in use. I haven't seen any mention of these on the new AirPods Max, any idea if they also have those as well?

it will have superior sound quality and better ANC, also, since the sound is superior the Spatial audio will be better also

The cable says its for changing purposes only ... does not mention audio.

"Charge your AirPods, AirPods Pro, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it's connected to a USB-C port"

There is an ADC built into the 3.5mm to lightning which the USB-C cable does not have (also why its priced so high).

I wonder if using the cable is going to affect battery life significantly as well.

iOS notification shows your status of charging and battery life

Hmm, I would like someone to test that. With a USB connection you don't need an ADC but you do need USB-audio handshake. Did the Beats headphones that work with the 3.5mm cable also work with USB audio?

Maybe this thing is it:
