I was excited for them at first, but that excitement has waned considerably by now. It's not good to miss the holiday shopping quarter. So to keep everything straight: They removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, promised this wondrous wireless future—which is now delayed, and released a new MacBook Pro with a headphone jack that doesn't even plug into their new Lightning headphones and doesn't have a port which you can plug an iPhone into. WAT. Apple is getting more and more confusing every day. Please let this not be the early 90s all over again. I say this because I care and I'm concerned.
what rubbish. the iPhone supports my wireless headphones perfectly -- Bluetooth. further, the W1 is available and shipping in apple's Beats product line.

the MBP doesnt need to have compatibility with Lightning headphones -- Lightning headphones are for iPhone, and are likely a stopgap measure. the unifying interface for all-devices-all-the-time is wireless...get with the program already. in a year you'll stop whining about legacy interfaces.

AirPods announced: Majority of MacRumors dismisses them as garbage and say they'd never buy them.

AirPods delayed: Majority of MacRumors acts like they were going to actually buy them and get outraged.
one hundred times, this! its such a shame MR has allowed itself to become a home to haters, trolls, and whiners, almost exclusively. its really cut back on the amount of time i spend here. dramatically.

The original info seems to be wrong and/or premature. Other insider sources say they'll ship this year. All the banter in this thread about the downfall of Apple and Cook's lack of leadership is nauseating. It seems that 75% of the comments on this board are almost identical. Unfortunately in the corporate world, CEOs are accountable to their shareholders. Measured by this, he's doing a respectable job.

Just a bunch of drama queens on here mostly. Best to be enjoyed with popcorn and a beer really and definitely not to be taken seriously. ;)

It's better to not announce them unless they are ready especially when they're a huge selling point to your flagship device. If they couldn't see this coming they should have stuck with tested technology like hmmm 3.5 mm jack. You want to experiment don't make it almost essential to go wireless. Bluetooth works on my iPhone 6
They have lightening headphones that already exist. So the wireless headphones aren't essential yet.

And don't look like tampons hanging out of your ear
[doublepost=1478032404][/doublepost]I'm surprised as to many people that want these horribly designed earbuds. Jaybird freedoms are super small. Sound amazing and don't look like the standard earbuds cutoff. These look ridiculous. Worst apple designed product in my opinion.

They're also not wireless. I'm sure if Apple wanted a wire connecting the headphones with a battery contained in a pod somewhere down the cable, they could have done a different design.
They probably wouldn't have right enough, more than likely they'd still resemble the existing EarPods with a wire going round the back of your head.

Still, the design of the AirPods doesn't bother me, EarPods with the cable cut off, so no real difference just more convenient. They're not the most attractive things ever but I'll take function (by which I mean battery life and simplicity, Siri control doesn't bother me I'll be using my Apple Watch to control the music anyway) over form any day of the week.

I did consider some alternatives but the vast majority of those are of the, cram them into your ear canal variety, which I'm not so keen on. For what I want them for I prefer the sit in your ear design of the Apple buds.

I'm incredibly scared that the Apple I love so much is turning into the Apple of the early 1990s. Tim Cook = modern John Sculley ???

Shocking why? They were over optimistic on the launch window, that's business, it happens. I'm not trying to put a "positive" spin on it, you can't, it's disappointing. But there's no point getting up in arms and overreacting over something as fallible as a launch date.

Take me, I make apps, I've released a few over the years. I think maybe two of them were actually finished and on sale within the timeframe I'd set. Why? Because things happen, unexpected things happen and when they do it's far better to deal with them and delay the launch than it is to push ahead with something that's not ready just to meet a deadline.

You need only look at the disaster that was the Note 7 to see what happens when you release a product that's not ready for the market. Wouldn't it have been better overall if Samsung had taken a few more weeks to ensure that product was ready. Or is it more important to get it out unfinished and not fully tested?

Announcing the product before it's ready is premature. Not sure what's overreacting it's not the end of the world but it's really bad form on Apples part. It's not a launch date it was a launch year. They said by the end of the end of October and it's not coming until the end of the year? Yeah it's something to get upset about if you bought an iPhone 7

Comparing this to an app is kinda silly. An app can release betas and isn't a physical device. If you expect something to be done by x day there's a lot more you should have prepared then if it's not a physical product. Not to mention they're a multi billion dollar company.

I know the Samsung issue is the faulty products of the year, but that's a worse case scenario. I'm not saying Apple should release a shoddy product, just don't announce a shoddy product until it's ready. They were so ready to push wireless but they're still working on it as they sell it to us

I said almost. It takes up the lightning port so it does effect the use of the phone

People on this site love trying to be the first to call the downfall of Apple under Cook. Just because a product ship date slipped doesn't mean he's a bad CEO. Steve himself said "Apple doesn't ship junk" and it seems like something is wrong with the AirPods that caused the delay. Oh yeah, remember when Jobs also didn't ship the white iPhone 4 until almost a year after it went for sale o_O

Companies announce products long before their ready all the time. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, Samsung, basically pick any company, they'll have at least one product announced before they're ready to ship it.

Comparing it to an app is no different a product doesn't need to be physical to require a finished state, would you be happy paying for music that stops midway through because they haven't finished writing the song, apparently it doesn't matter it's not a real product because you can't touch it. Yes an app can have betas, they all do, but you should never, ever even consider releasing something you would class as a beta and expect someone to pay for unfinished work.

Just because Apple is a multi-billion dollar company doesn't make them exempt from supplier problems or unforeseen issues, that's why they're called unforeseen, you aren't expecting them and you didn't plan for them. Things happen, fact of life, no point getting worked up about it. So I don't see why it's something that iPhone 7 owners should be upset about as you claim, are these people who are completely devoid of patience? I am an iPhone 7 owner and every pair of headphones, wired or wireless, I own works with my iPhone 7. I want a pair of AirPods but not until they are finished and ready.

Yep, and then I also remember how people flipped out that the white iPhone 4 ended up being <0.1mm thicker than the black iPhone 4.

Yes they announce it before it's ready to ship, but that release date is usually final. Yes in some cases the product is delayed (more so for software like games than hardware like consoles) but they get their share of criticism when that happens. More so depending on the length of the delay. (One month vs 3)

I never said anything about paying for the beta, although there are some circumstances where betas are payed. I wouldn't be happy with an unfinished song, but if it was free well I might not complain. That's why software and hardware products are different in terms of release. A hardware can't really be updated post release, a software can and often is expected to. No software is perfect and no hardware will last forever, but both have to be realeased at some point. Software has that extra benefit that hardware doesn't have and this is known; you can't treat a hardware release the same as a software one.

We actually have no idea what the issue is. Obviously it wasn't seen, but my view is they should have seen (almost) any issue that can arise and plan for those. They're not intentionally being incompetent, but I don't think it's wrong to hold them to a high standard.

Look at AAPL appreciation over the last 5 years:

September 2012 AAPL = $100 5 years later AAPL = $111 2%/year appreciation - that is piss poor.

Sometimes you announce a product when it's almost ready for release like with the iPhone or iPad. Sorry. :(

The higher wattage Kaby chips for the MBP 15" won't be ready till mid to late 2017.

Which wattage are those? The Quadcore Kabylakes are coming in the leaked Dell XPS Jan-Feb refresh. That's the same chip, surely?

Sure you're not thinking about the end cycle desktop chips?

It's time for Tim Cook to go. Can't even get headphones out on time. Instead of a new iPhone we get the 6Ss. 3 year old $3000 "Pro" machines. Declining revenue and profit. It's time to bring in someone who can innovate. It's been depressing since Mr. Jobs passed. I think of the changes in the 5 years before this death compared to the 5 years since.

I love Apple's Q3/Q4 2016

September: "We have the COURAGE to remove the earphone jack from the iPhone, everything will be wireless, see the AirPods or the revolutionary Lightning Connector earphones"

October: "We look into the future, USB-C, and nothing else (well, somehow the earphone jack we had the COURAGE to remove, is back in a MacBook Pro, so none of the iPhone 7 cables work with your Mac)

November: "Producing wireless earphones is harder than we thought...; sorry"

By the way, look at our stock price.... =(

Tim Cook, the living proof that a guy in Operations has NO CLUE of Product Management or Commercial Acumen.

Go for the Bose SoundSport; avoid buying this crap

You picked the peak price of AAPL in 2012 (not 5 years ago). You also miscalculated, because you only took into account price appreciation and completely left out dividends.. It was actually an annualized return of 5.18% (using DRIP). That's a total return of 23.11% since September 19th, 2012.

Even worse, if you actually would have picked exactly 5 years ago, you would have averaged 16.96% return per year after DRIP. A 118.94% total return. You cherry-picked the worst possible stock timing.
