But why?

The Bose have:

Strong connectivity and the Bose app makes the function of the "instant" pairing Apple promises

They have very reliable connection, not a single cutout

And power efficiency, well; are you really going to be using them non-stop for 8 hours?

Maybe you are aware of any other benefit from the W1?

Actually these are one of the few things Apple is doing that aren't overpriced.
I love the EarPods. I bought my first ones at the Apple HQ store in Cupertino (got a second pair later with my iPhone 6), and still use them almost daily; even on my android phone.
For 25€ they sound: okay! Way better than the old ones that came with the iPods, but that's it. They're not bad, but far from being great.

But paying 179€ for the same experience, even with some nice case, plus the fear of losing one because it fell from my ear in some bad situation is not worth the price IMHO(!). ymmv.

What nonsense! Airflow!

I'd rather have *slightly* less bass then - if I had to look like I'm wearing white earrings!
Yea, I mean the laws of physics and how sound is generated, nonsense I say! It's a friggin resonance tube, don't like them don't buy them. I had no idea that my choice of listening device should be subject to the fashion opinions of others....because I'm not in middle school and don't need to look "cool".

The way Apple has dealt with this IMO is not very good.

I've read they were not re-using airpods but disposing them after each reviewer had use them after the keynote. They obviously had a very decent number of them there then.

They put a time frame out there of late October similar to the Nike Watch

They have a seperate company factory manufacturing these pods for them so it's not a case of prioritising manufacturing something else hence a delay

Now Apple waited till the very last hour to announce a delay. Literally a day before what they defined as "late October" the 28th

Just like how they waited the day before their iPhone 7 launch to announce they wouldn't have any stock of plus to sell to walk ins... disappointing not a new customer but rather true fans who queue for the experience.

What?!? Are u telling me they didn't know the airpod would be no where close to being ready for distribution in the days leading up to it. Just like how they didn't know the plus wouldn't be avaliable for walk in sale 12hrs before launch

And then the keynote... no mention of a delay of the airpod. It would have been nice for at least an official word that the airpods were delayed and that we would expect them December, Jan... but no mention whatsoever

Instead all we had was an Apple rep inform 1 site that it was delayed.

They didn't even bother updating the website. After the keynote the website came back still saying "end of October" It was only a few minutes later that they got rid of that

Maybe we want them to release announced products in the time frame they touted that are ready - mmmm - sounds like Keystone Cops this one.

What the hell have all those engineers been doing for so long? Not seeing it in that "pipeline filled with magical products" that Timmy boy keeps spouting off about.

If you find a last minute problem you find a last minute problem. That's just life. That is how the electronics world works sometimes. You can ignore the issue and just release it or delay it and get it right. Especially as headphones are the type of products that Apple tend to update rarely if at all it makes sense to get it right first time.

Considering that this company now pretty much releases OS updates for multiple devices at the same time throughout the year and normally gets products out the door a week or so after anouncements. I think you can forgive them for this surely?

Rumors has it that Oral-B has objected to the form factor (expecting confusion in the market...)

Now listen..
I've had the airpods for approx 6 weeks.
I listen without limits ..
And I know exacley what the production problem is..
Enough said..

AirPods announced: Majority of MacRumors dismisses them as garbage and say they'd never buy them.

AirPods delayed: Majority of MacRumors acts like they were going to actually buy them and get outraged.

They could be different MR members from one thread to another.
Besides, it seems like at least half of the posts on the thread are MR members that say they were not going to get them anyway.

I have have Bose headsets, for my wife and me.

They work well.

The W1 chip with the Airpods has an internal promise of stepping into the next generation of communications with our many devices. Using Siri. Enhancing AI. Ease of use. Always on. Dependable. Compact. Wirefree.

Airpods are in the right direction. Now.

It's disruptive to the headphone/earphone area. Only Apple has the W1 chip for now, ahead of what BT 5.0 is considering next year. With an early start, Apple can dominate this industry segment. Again.

A small device with great possibilities.

I'm hoping.

what rubbish. the iPhone supports my wireless headphones perfectly -- Bluetooth. further, the W1 is available and shipping in apple's Beats product line.

the MBP doesnt need to have compatibility with Lightning headphones -- Lightning headphones are for iPhone, and are likely a stopgap measure. the unifying interface for all-devices-all-the-time is wireless...get with the program already. in a year you'll stop whining about legacy interfaces.

one hundred times, this! its such a shame MR has allowed itself to become a home to haters, trolls, and whiners, almost exclusively. its really cut back on the amount of time i spend here. dramatically.
I'm not whining about legacy interfaces. I was actually for getting rid of the headphone jack. Apple didn't get rid of it on the MacBook, and to make things more confusing, they didn't make it compatible at all with the iPhone—either the power cable nor the headphones. For a company that prides itself on "it just works" and having a great ecosystem, I'm really not seeing any evidence that they still care about that right now.

My point exactly.
While Steve let Jony play and develop for the future he didn't put all the eggs in Jony's basket. Steve kept updating the lines keeping them annually-ish current not the one horse pony Tim is riding, namely the iPhone.
How embarrassed does Phil feel know with the "can't innovate my ass" comment? Had he known Apple wasn't going to update it for years, if ever, he might have chosen other words.
I've always had a feeling that his "can't innovate anymore my ass" comment was off the cuff and probably not sanctioned ahead of time, but he was able to get away with it being who he is. He was probably feeling really high in the moment. It's sad that not only can pro users not get a new MBP that is much better than what was released in 2012, but they can't even get an updated desktop machine in the Mac Pro. There is not much left for them.

Bugger it.just reserved the Solo 3s for pickup. Will try to see if I can live with the size and how convenient they are when folded up. Can always refund within 14 days, and who knows?! Might even have BeatsX by then! (Doubtful)

Looking forward to reading your complete review of the product you have obviously tested. Hopefully you can post some pictures of you wearing them. I say this knowing you would not post these comments on MR simply having seen the Keynote (if that).
Apple's earbuds are not a new phenomenon. You might not believe this, but I actually have at least six pairs of the wired version collecting dust in a desk drawer somewhere. Just because these new ones are now wireless doesn't change the fact that the overall ergonomics and materials used are still the same. (Which was my main point of criticism BTW). And jury's still out on any discernible improvements made to the sound quality, too.

lol you do know that one share of Apple from 2012 at $100 is now 8 shares at $111 each right? That's an 800% return.
No, he is truly looking at current dilution. See my earlier post on page 11 for an explanation.

I showed up at a Halloween party with a pair of electric toothbrush heads, one stuck in each of my ears. Nobody got that those were the Apple AirPods, but I was actually a bit surprised that they didn't know what Air Pods they were either. To be fair, some of them said they don't really keep up with tech (with one of them still using a "candy bar" style phone with physical buttons). With the real deal delayed an additional 2 months, the costume will likely be lost on them. Oh well.

Actually these are one of the few things Apple is doing that aren't overpriced.

I was thinking this for while and after reading all these Airpod articles, your the only one who made the point these are actually priced lower than most anticipated. I was actually thinking the Airpods would be priced somewhere around $225.00-$250.00. With the general positive beta reviews, affordable price point and the fact this still relatively a small niche market for Bluetooth, these will likely do well. The W1 chip is the real selling point.

When's the last time something like this happened to Apple? Genuinely curious as I can't really remember anything like it in recent times.
