A bug is alerting some second-generation AirPods Pro users to "replace" their battery soon, according to various online reports.

The bug seems to trigger battery replacement notifications from the Find My app on nearby devices when the battery of the AirPods Pro earbuds or MagSafe Charging Case is low. The second-generation AirPods Pro feature enhanced Find My functionality thanks to a U1 chip for Precision Finding and transmit their battery levels at all times, so it seems likely that the alert relates to these new features.

The notifications urge the user to "replace the battery on... soon," even though it is not possible to replace AirPods batteries and the device simply needs to be recharged. Users experiencing the bug may not be immediately aware that it relates to their AirPods Pro, since the item is referred to in notifications as simply "left," "right," or "Case," leading to somewhat incoherent alerts.

The notifications seems similar to that used for the AirTag when its CR2032 battery is almost depleted and needs to be replaced, so it seems that the system is conflating the two products. One theory suggests that Apple used much of the AirTag's firmware for the MagSafe Charging Case, causing identical alerts even where they do not make sense.

Users have complained about the bug on the MacRumors forums and Reddit, but it is not clear how widespread the issue is. While Apple has not yet acknowledged the bug, it will likely be resolved via a software update in due course.

don't know if my gen 2 are defective or not but the find my doesn't work at all with them. Says no location found. Multiple repairing done
 
2032 battery out; new battery in. How long does an AirTag's 2032 battery last, anyway? 🤫
 
These forced upgrades are ridicilous! Not even a month old and already implementing this in their software. This is batterygate for Airpods being tested right here.

They did this with iPhone, Airtags and now Airpods.

How are people "okay" with the lack of quality control these days on apples software. Every week it's something new about a bug or glitch. And these are premium prices!!! At least in the Android world you can move to a different brand.
 
WFH working out so good for Apple hardware development.

Seems like a lot of copy/paste is going on from what I can tell. I also wouldn't be surprised if a bit of herbal indulgence at home is contributing to lapses in quality checks and control.

Apple turning more and more like Tesla these days...

(don't get me as some anti-smoking person, far from it actually but it is a possibility...)
 
Okay but why are the trolls blaming WFH?? Work from home would not affect quality control and testing before shipping these out the door.

We aren't trolls and some of us work in tech here and also WFH and can tell you certain teams and functions are not the same if performed from home. It is what it is.

Apple is generally working on products 2 years out and this product cycle would be the first one to literally be a product of WFH since 2 years ago was 2020.

Its not far-fetched idea and unless you have evidence to proof that it isn't WFH that's contributing to this day after day of bugs, glitches and unpolished releases then the theory is not invalidated.
 
Considering the 0/10 repairability score of those things, the Gods of software bugs must have a great sense of humour.
 
Do AirPods normally alert the user when the battery is wearing out? I would think that would be pretty self-evident as run times get lower and lower as it reaches its maximum number of cycles.

You do realize Apple has been offering remote work for a very long time right? I applied to Apple as a senior developer and it was a remote position. This was back in 2015.

And this is not how it works. You guys are blaming work from home so YOU need to provide proof that WFH is the issue.

You must have forgotten some very BAD issues with Apple in the past. Snow Leopard deleting all my files? This is what trained me to NEVER EVER EVER store files on my main drive. Steve "You are holding it wrong" issue at a hardware level?

Don't lie to him.... WFH is causing all sorts of issues. Anyone "claiming" that it works is just wanting to be catered to and has an entitlement problem.
 
This isn’t a WFH problem per se, but rather a WFH problem in the context of Apple’s approach. Apple has two primary obsessions: secrecy and running teams like a startup. Those two obsessions often clash and produce disjointed services and products. When WFH was added to that mix, it moved from disjointed to buggy disjointed.
