The AirPods Pro launched 1,000 days ago today and are the oldest current-generation Apple device still on sale.

Apple announced the AirPods Pro on Monday, October 28, 2019. The earbuds went on sale immediately and orders started arriving to customers on Thursday, October 31.

Apple went on to release the AirPods Max in December 2020 and the third-generation AirPods in October 2021. After the discontinuation of the iPod touch earlier this year, which itself is 1,153 days old today, the AirPods Pro are the oldest current-generation Apple device still on sale, followed by the 2019 Mac Pro, which is 957 days old today.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, and Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes have repeatedly said that the AirPods Pro 2 will launch in the second-half of 2022, so the new model is now likely just a matter of months away. According to reports from a range of sources, the AirPods Pro 2 are expected to feature:

It has also been suggested that the AirPods Pro 2 will feature an updated chip, self-adaptive noise cancellation capabilities, heart rate and temperature sensors, hearing aid capabilities, and a USB-C port, but Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman have cast doubt over this information.

It seems likely that the AirPods Pro 2's sound-emitting charging case will integrate into the Find My app, similar to how users can currently emit a sound from their individual AirPods inside the case to help find them. This lines up with alleged leaked photos of the next-generation AirPods Pro, which showed a charging case with speaker holes to emit a sound for location tracking, allowing the earbuds and the case to be located separately.

Support for Lossless audio is among the biggest upgrades expected for the AirPods Pro 2 and could have ramifications for the AirPods lineup in the future. All of Apple's current AirPods products, including the third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max, do not support Lossless audio.

This is because AirPods play audio via Bluetooth, limiting them to the AAC codec. Higher quality Apple Lossless Audio Codec files may need to be streamed to AirPods directly to circumvent Bluetooth and enable a Lossless listening experience, but it is possible that Apple could develop an alternative solution to bypass the current limits of Bluetooth.

Kuo has narrowed down the launch of the AirPods Pro 2 to the fourth quarter of 2022, which runs from October through December of the year. This means the AirPods Pro 2 could arrive around three years after their predecessors. For more information, see our detailed AirPods Pro 2 guide.

ANC was perfect at launch. Then with every subsequent firmware update Apple made them less and less effective. I don't get what they were trying to do.

They still sound atrocious compared to proper earphones though - even compared to budget Shure SE215's which wipe the floor with AirPods. Perhaps Apple will actually make some effort with the audio quality with the next gen Pro's as they are a complete joke.

um, what about the number 1 issue? battery life...

Other issues I've had:

Connectivity issues
Charging issues
Degrading ear tips
Terrible sound quality when used for communication (unbearable over Windows)
No mute option
No volume control
Noise cancelling could improve
Transparency could improve
On the design side, I wouldn't mind some color options but it's not gonna happen

They should do starlight and midnight black AirPods Pro 2 colours that would be amazing 💡

Perhaps each and every update prepares u further to buy the new ones with more effective anc ‘

I have just been given then as a gift (I already use better sounding ones for music listening) and I'm testing them to see if I'd be interested in getting the new model.
I must say, they are very convenient to use and very comfortable, very useful for work calls or to use with noise canceling when there's noise in the neighbourghood.
I'll still use my technics to listen to music while out, but I might be interested in getting a new model when the apple lossles streaming on wifi will be released.
Perhaps I'll be getting the new model of the airpods max.

I really wanted to like the Pros, but I couldn't get the right fit in one ear. I still have them, but the AirPods 3 are my go-to buds because they fit perfectly.

I tried a short shoot-out between the AirPods and AirPods Pro. I didn’t have time to really experience how the noise cancelling and transparency modes operated but it was reasonable. One of the things that shocked me the most was the difference in sound quality between the standard and pro versions. I found it to be negligible, with the AirPods Pro benefiting from a more robust lower end.

For the price difference, it didn’t seem like an obvious choice to spend the extra money for what are essentially disposable earbuds. Understandable given that the designs are so similar but they would have to improve the features around the main function of audio playback to make the next generation interesting enough for me to buy a pair.

998 days of ownership, still very happy and don’t really have any issues with them.

The buds were however replaced under the replacement program at 2 years of age. They did have a small defect, some ticking sound when on the move.

Did get me free fresh batteries though, looking at two more years of use I’m hoping.

If Apple made it so you only paid once that would be great, and if they used Wi-Fi like my soundbar does to connect to other speakers in its mesh not bluetooth I would be happier maybe. I sent mine back, they sounded mediocre, the update procedure was iffy, and battery life not great. They are not a £180 set of in ear headphones because when the battery wares out you have to buy a whole new pair, I feel this is a real rip off as with many other companies who make similar in ears as saying this is how much they cost isn't completely true, if you want to keep them for years or for life then unlike a decent set dare I say wired ones you just throw them away and keep buying a new pair over and over again ad infinitum. Also personally I wanted to adjust the volume with them, not get my phone out (defeats the point a bit) let alone ask siri as Siri which would probably try and send a text instead or something else you didn't want it to do.

Also they are not to me at least the best audio quality I felt they were mediocre. These were the first thing I ever sent back as a 'nope' from Apple and I wont be buying a set of in ears that are infinitely costly ever again, not forgetting the case battery as well when that wears out. Just my opinion and to those that love them fair enough, I just see them as a money pit with far from near audiophile sound, I was really disapointed as I wanted to like them, but just couldnt

If they give Air Pods 2 a USB-C charging case while keeping all the design same, I wish they allow me to buy just the outer charging case so that I can use my existing buds in new USB-C case. But Apple who love generating e-waste would not want to do this.
